Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Grin you'll get there - and you'll get there in your head as well as your body

BsshBossh · 03/12/2013 13:49

TiP if I were you I'd unhide yourself from that thread and link to the BBC article. It's the type of article I'd have been interested in reading when I was obese.

BsshBossh · 03/12/2013 13:55

Toffee if you want to bump your cals up a bit but not feel bloated or too full then try unsalted nuts or avocados; better yet just add more olive oil or butter to your regular meals. I never skimp on the fat in my cooking or on my toast and it helps me ensure I eat enough whilst not feeling too full.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/12/2013 13:56

Toffee So, close ! Just one more shoulder heave and you'll be a healthy weight.

Turkey Best wishes to your bum cheeks

My holiday strategy:

IFUC (IF Until Christmas) is better than IFOC (IF On Crap)

and
CHEST (Christmas Hard Exercise Shows Toughness)

to achieve
SWATH (Same Weight After The Holidays)

but I must avoid being a
CHAMP (Christmas Had All the Massive Puddings)

Now if I can just find a mnemonic to remember my mnemonics ...

Dotty342kids · 03/12/2013 14:02

Hello all!!
Been away for a few days (not away, just really busy with no time to log on) and in that short time I have been a binging, scoffing monster and am 10st 8lbs as of today - which is 3lbs up on where I normally hover Shock
Just shows how much I rely on these forums to keep me on the straight and narrow and how fast I return to bad old habits Sad

Anyway, today is a fast day and I'm determind to do it properly so it's veggie sausages, a couple of boiled potatoes and a mountain of veg for dinner. Followed by zumba class, then a bath to keep me away from the kitchen!

EarSlaps · 03/12/2013 14:45

FD going ok so far. Post workout I'm not actually feeling hungry. Just need to hold out through DS's dinner time now. Then work out what I'm going to eat for dinner.

Talkinpeace · 03/12/2013 14:53

OOh OOH
while I think of it

was checking charity and pawn shops this morning
Wii for £35, Wii fit board for £13, Wii fit / yoga / zumba £3 each
so for those struggling to get the toning side sorted, £55 and you have your own home gym studio - and the kids / husbands can try doing the balance game
Wii hula hoop while tipsy is splendid to do and spectate Grin

EarSlaps · 03/12/2013 15:01

Also lots of freebie Jillian Michaels workouts on YouTube. So plenty of ways to get fit. I really should get our Wii out again.

postmanpatsreindeer · 03/12/2013 15:10

I have an unused Wii with Wii Fit if anyone wants to buy it off me! No-one uses it anymore since we got the xbox 360.

FD going well here, 4 cups of mint tea so far. Might have soup for dinner, then again I might not bother with food. Going to the gym after work so feeling virtuous today which makes a change from the way I feel after scoffing choc.

BCF hope you wouldn't eat this reindeer! Can you come up with a mnemonic for excessive chocolate consumption please? Much more of an issue than puddings for me, and the generosity of parents means I am certain to have at least 8 - 10 boxes of assorted choccy goodies by the end of term (which I am not in the least ungrateful for, and only whine a little if I am given wine, since I don't drink!)

Welcome back dotty I'm sure you have it all under control already.

BsshBossh · 03/12/2013 15:44

Dotty I was wondering where you were. Welcome back. Stick with us and we'll get you to goal :)

annielewis · 03/12/2013 15:55

Wheres MrsF? Is she ok? namechanged?

xx

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 03/12/2013 16:05

:-D

I've lost another 2lbs since thursday!

Way back in september I joined a thread '2stone to lose by christmas' - I'm only 4lbs off that :-O

I've lost 4inches from my waist and 3inches from my ribs-cage!

Dottie, all I've done is follow the advice and support here, if I can do it, anyone can.

Thank you everyone

rubbishfamily333 · 03/12/2013 16:05

Hey everyone, well I are wayyy too much over the weekend, woke uk yesterday with a horrible cold and managed to fast and finished on less than 350 cals GrinGrin

Still got horrible cold today I'm thinking about fasting Wednesday this week and maybe Friday? I usually fast on Thursdays but I am going on a trip with dds school so may need to eat!

Dotty342kids · 03/12/2013 16:21

Thanks for the welcome backs everyone! And Bennettgirl that is amazing, well done to you! See, it's this kind of inspiration that keeps us all going.

MrsFlorrick · 03/12/2013 17:26

I'm still here!! Had a busy weekend because H refused to help with DC again Hmm

And yesterday DS was a right bugger. Spent all day saying no and sticking him in time out. I actually had a small glass of wine after they went to bed because he'd worn me out! Argh.

Today both DC were at school. Yay. I was so tired (DS has started the old fun and games if getting up in the night several times Shock) so I dropped them off, went home to bed and slept for 3 hours. Feel groggy now.

I had a liquid fast Sunday - only till evening where I had dinner.

Had another liquid fast today which has just been broken with Waitrose spinach cannelloni (275cal). And the DC refused to eat the left over crumble so I couldn't help myself and ate it. Total cals at 700 HmmConfused

Ffs. But hey I am still claiming it as a FD and that pear crumble only had sugar in the topping and then half the normal amount so a "healthy" crumble. And it was yum yum yum GrinGrin

Earslaps. The bovril trick works. It's great. So warming and it feel like you've had something.

Well done on all the losses.

Sadly the last month I have lost nothing. Due to DC illness overload and frequent frenzies. Not gained either which is good.

Still I am stuck with the 6lbs to lose. Argh.

I am going to get tough now I know I can liquid fast. And I am Fasting Thursday as well.

Friday I will fast too during the day but then planning serious dinner and wine in the evening. I am doing the daytime fast to offset the Friday night frenzy.

Bigchocfrenzy. Grin You're still amazing.

Bssh. How do you manage to take the liquid fast over night? I can do it all day (from previous night) but I need to eat in the evening.

dingdongduckyfuzz · 03/12/2013 17:46

Just a quick check in, NFD thankfully, but haven't really had a chance to eat, spent most of the day either at fracture clinic or running around after dtd1 (obviously) and her twin, who isn't suffering sympathy pains but may have been attacked by the green eyed monster grrr

So far today - toast and marmalade, packet of mini ritz (in waiting room) two biscuits some tomato and basil soup and just about to hit the wine and cashews... FD tomorrow, although I'm no longer working so it will be tough.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 03/12/2013 17:51

BsshBossh - I don't use margarine anymore though DH and the kids use flora as I read butter is more natural and better so I buy Lurpak spreadable and I enjoy it on toast or toasted bagels when I have it. I like ready salted KP so will move to cashews as they are non salted and I think good calories?

Welcome back dotty.

Well done LeastAccaomplishedGirl. Grin

I have also been wondering about MrsF. Is she okay?

minifingers · 03/12/2013 18:44

I fasted yesterday and Sunday. Today was our school mums christmas lunch at a carvery. I had 3 courses plus coffee and now won't eat again until tomorrow lunch.

I've been reflecting a lot on my eating and my feelings about food. I think fasting makes you do that.

sweetiepie1979 · 03/12/2013 19:11

Damn that bloody houmous then so that means I went over my 500 yesterday what a bugger! Today was a nfd tomorrow I'll have to do a fast then again on Friday. I've bought some low calorie meals from waitrose that look ok and then I know exactly what I'm eating. Gutted that I thought I fasted yesterday and I didn't is this 2 stone ever going to shift! Weep weep

Not2bObvious · 03/12/2013 19:39

Arg!! It's an FD turned mini FD. I went visiting after work, big mistake - HUGE. So that's the beauty of this WOL, have a botched FD move it to another day. Off to mfp to calculate damageXmas Blush

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/12/2013 20:01

^^
Just back from CrossFit and Tabata at the gym.
^^
Xmas Wink
I successfully managed a very low carb, sub-TDEE minifast today.
Xmas Shock
I had nothing since lunch, so my training felt fasted.
This is a new plan I devised, because this week is a scheduled training break - only 3 days training:
-Tomorrow and Saturday will be normal NFDs
-Thursday a low carb minifast like today.
-Friday and Monday FDs
-Aims this week: avoid Frenzies and achieve calorie deficit
Hmm
^^

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/12/2013 20:06

Sweetie Ok, the hummus brought you above the 500, but it is very healthy. You still had a massive calorie deficit, so don't be so hard on yourself.

Call it a good FD try and have your planned NFD tomorrow. Then before your next planned FD, write out exactly what you want to eat and drink, totting up all the cals.
Xmas Smile

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 03/12/2013 20:22

Welcome back Dotty, BennetGirl, MrsF
So BigChiefKnobhead (MrF) remains in non-parent mode.

PostmanPatsReindeer But reindeer is so tasty ...
Xmas Hmm

Your desired mnemonic, ma'am Reindeer:

CHOC NAY (Chocolate Horrible Old Chocolate, Not 'Aving You)
