The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

Bssh – sorry to hear you all have lurgy, at least that way its all over and done with at once though!
BCF - I like chocolate but am not bothered about it in the way others are – I prefer nuts or crisps for my frenzies - but even then I'm not sure I can match you Xmas Grin
TIP – I have come to realize I’m far more likely to succeed on FD if I don’t eat until the evening – the sooner I start, the more I end up eating

Today – nothing but tea, coffee and water until 6ish, then soup and crackers for 300cals

In other news, DTD1 has broken her leg, so that’s keeping me busy and her bored!

I'm holding my breath writing this so I don't catch anything. That'll work, right? Hope poorly fasters feel better soon. I'll = toast chez whim, so I'm extra impressed with fasters.

Not doing too badly so far, had latte and my usual (creature of habit) lunch of egg, spinach and salsa. Made a vat of minestrone and counted it out into 200 cal pots for the freezer. I keep a pouch of grated cheese in the freezer, and can add a spoon of that if I can have 300. I'm pleased with how big a portion it appears to be.

Have to brave tae kwon do with all 4 again tonight which will test the resolve!

Hi all
joining this board after having fallen off the low carb wagon some months ago. Realised that low carb just doesn't do it for me - I lose weight, but I plateau eventually because of my inability to say no to the odd sweet treat, in particular fruit.

I started calorie counting 10 days ago and have lost 5lbs without much suffering, and I think I'm going to combine it with 5:2 on non-fasting days to accelerate weight loss. I've just done 2 straight fast days in a row and have enjoyed the feeling it's given me - I feel sharp and bright. Next fast days I'll separate I think. I am planning to save my calories for an evening meal and a teeny bit over for a few cups of tea. M&S count on us main meals are 3 for £6 at the moment with. £2 voucher back if you spend £10 or more, so I'm filling my fridge up. They come out at about 380 calories or so each which leaves a few over for milk in my tea.

Got 20lbs at least to lose. But I think I'm more motivated by health than weight at the moment.

That is the beauty of 5:2 as a Way of Eating : it can be combined with pretty much anything else to achieve the health benefits that are the underlying methodology - weight loss is secondary

Working on big job for last 5 days and am now completely lost on thread, nc's passed me by, no idea who anyone is at this stage (or who I am myself I'm that tired after working 10 days in a row)
Didn't do my Monday FD due to severe exhaustion, carbs were my friend today but when I had my dinner eaten, the kitchen was closed! FD tomorrow & mini FD Wednesday as Thursday/Friday away with work. This is my normal yearly danger time - it's around now I start my Xmas gain but not this year, this year I'm going to be mindful. Just wish I had some energy Xmas Sad

I find this time of year tricky too not2 - the start of the slippery festive slope, tiredness, cold and temptation conspiring against me! I'm determined not to succumb this year.

Successful FD over. Sub-200 cals. 24 hour LOF.

Entire family very poorly. DD will have to stay home tomorrow. DH wants and needs to stay home but will get no rest if he does so (DD won't be able to leave her beloved Daddy alone) so he might book into a hotel to get some sleep. I'm the least poorly by far so I will tend to DD and do a lot of laundry (a fair bit of sweat, tears and vomit over bedding).

I am jubilant that I have two NFDs ahead of me and an Ocado delivery due first thing with some nice treats :)

I've read umpteen articles about obesity and diabetes being associated with dementia, but hadn't heard it being called Type 3 diabetes before.

I gather it is just Alzheimers with this obesity link. Vascular dementia is generally caused by strokes or heart defects in old age and doesn't seem to be particularly weight-related. Or have you other links ?

Many of us are worried how long the NHS will remain "free at the point of use" for UK residents. The rise in largely preventable diseases like type 2 diabetes is frustrating, but is a controversial area to tackle.
No surprise, tip fearlessly waded in to hammer everyone !

As a scientist (in a very different field), it is exasperating how some people don't understand the terms "associated with" and "much higher risk", but e.g. quote the apocryphal fat old granny who smoked and drank her way to 95.
Of course, many have an emotional investment in not acknowledging they have a problem, because doing so would require unpleasant actions / choices.

Vascular dementia does seem to be definitely a disease of aging : incidence is rising because there are more old people.

Alzheimers is rising among younger people - hence the research linking it to insulin resistance damage in teh brain
so it is NOT an aging thing, its a lifestyle thing.

Toffee If you were seduced by a small chunk of brownie, it sounds like well under 100 cals. So at the worst you were sub-600. Not a fail.
Anyway, we don't have failures

duckyfuzz hope your DD recovers quickly - is she is plaster? Poor thing! Get her a knitting needle for the itchy skin inside the plaster if she is!!

Ive eaten crap today and surprise surprise feel like crap too! FD for me tomorrow and am actually looking forward to it again. Anyone else fasting tomorrow?

bssh am fasting tomorrow and have delivery first thing too - have got bovril, chicken bovril, tabasco and boullion powder in mine! Grin

Also yummy things that I can have Wednesday - yummy full fat normal food. Enjoy your NFD's - and if it was you that suggested tabasco in Bovril - I salute you, have a bit of sore throat and it is warming me through nicely!!!

Half thinking of fasting tomorrow but DH is away over night so I am predicting very little sleep. Then again, ds2 woke up while I was out this evening so watched some tv with the babysitter, that might knock him out a bit more than usual.

tip bigchoc Alzheimer's is also very linked with B12 issues, and the nice guidelines and NHS are very behind in their knowledge and willingness to deal with this. Germany, Spain and other European countries acknowledge that a level of 400 and below is enough to be low and that some people's ability to function is badly impaired. Here they do nothing (even so far as suggesting supplements) until your level is below 200, leaving some people at risk of permanent neurological and nerve damage, and a far larger tendency towards Alzheimer's.
