Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

eatriskier love the name change Grin

PoshPaula · 03/12/2013 08:12

Got the Monday FD out of the way. Am going to leave it as long as possible before eating. I still don't dare to get on the scales though.

BsshBossh · 03/12/2013 09:32

TiP, Pinupgirl's refrain is always "Well, I'm size 16 (or whatever) and perfectly healthy!" And that may be perfectly true for now. But the facts are bold: obesity is the significant indicator of health problems eventually. I too was in rude health (confirmed by blood tests) at size 18/20 but I know from my mother's generation what could lay in store for me in the future had I remained obese.

Mornin' Campers

'Tis me. Whatd'ya think? Do my giblets look big in this?

No fasting here yesterday or today. On rare visit to rare family member. Eaten disgustingly calorific big chewy cookies. Trying to be good in between them Xmas Grin and lots of water.

Will have to do back to back wed/thurs to make up.

Bum cheeks better today so will be squatting. Thanks for concern Xmas Hmm BigChoc! My squatting is rather good so don't worry about back. It's just my poor cheekies [christmas wince]

Good luck all fasters today!

Am hoping to get chance to read all the alzheimers/insulin bits later.

Toffee dare we ask if scales were down??? Don't take it out on the bagels if not Xmas Shock

annielewis · 03/12/2013 10:19

earslaps were you mrs F? I've lost track of all the name changes!! Tabasco bovril is fab!!

PPR how's fasting going today?

sweetiepie1979 · 03/12/2013 10:25

Small disappointment with scales this morning trying g to not let it demotivate. Fast day yesterday so thought scales might show a slight loss bit they have stayed the same so that's ok particularly ad I ate whatever I liked at the weekend. Haven't had breakfast yet will try s minifast or fast today. Desperate to be safelt out of the 11. Hoe come some people loose do much in the first week or 2 I'm into 4 week and have lost 4 pounds.

BetsyJingleBells · 03/12/2013 10:31

Tuesday scale fails: You'll be weighing digesting food and retained water from any weekend big meals. Best to weigh in after your second fast of the week (assuming you haven't had any blow outs between fasts) - then you'll get a truer weigh in.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 03/12/2013 10:35

Morning all Smile

BsshBossh - sorry to hear you have a houseful of poorly people. The hotel for DH sounds like a good idea. I remember when mine were small it was hard to stay away from DH when he was ill in bed but tbh it was mostly me. I can't lie in bed while ill so why should he? Blush.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo - the scales were the same - 11 stone 4.2lb - but that is a win for me as no increase. Just enjoyed a toasted bagel with lurpak. Will be having another bagel for lunch with beetroot and feta cheese.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 03/12/2013 10:39

BetsyJingleBells - I think you are right and I will fast again tomorrow and hope that Thursday's weigh in will bring a loss.

sweetiepie1979 · 03/12/2013 12:05

Ok betsy I'll do that. How come everyone seems to be eating bagels? Are they low cal?

EarSlaps · 03/12/2013 12:19

No Annie, I was Wrigglebum. I have just had a nice big bowl of Tabasco bovril, very satisfying with the salt and spice combo. Perhaps I should add to recipe thread- 'make hot bovril in a bowl, add Tabasco to taste, enjoy' Xmas Grin.

I'm sort of fasting today, as long as I can anyway. Had a small advent choc and green tea for brekkie, then my bovril lunch. Not decided on dinner yet. Going to try and get DS to nap now so I can do a workout.

Not2bObvious · 03/12/2013 12:27

Fast is going ok today, contemplating a brisk walk before lunch, hmmm. Scales was about the same today as last Tuesday which sucked - small worries I know but I had 3 fd's last week due to sick tum and did a lot of physical work so it makes little or no sense in my mind. Anyway, she says through gritted teeth, Thursday will be official weigh in.
Nearly time to break my fast, be close to 19 hours when done. Anyone else on an FD?

whimsicalname · 03/12/2013 12:38

Morning all. Good fd here yest tho I'm feeling sluggish this morning after no exercise for 3 days. Or maybe 4. Am trying to be lower cal than usual on nfds today and Thursday so I can splurge at wkd. Have a good day everyone.

sweetiepie1979 · 03/12/2013 12:41

We'll I'm thinking of doing a fast today, how many calories in a pittance bread smothered with houmous? Iknow how you feel regarding scalesnotobvious keep in there I'm the same.

annielewis · 03/12/2013 12:41

I am FD today not2b Going ok so far, tea and bovril with Tabasco ( thank you earslaps!!)

Am very busy today tho so find that helps a lot!!

annielewis · 03/12/2013 12:46

sweetie an average white pitta is about 160 cals according to MFP. Houmous can be a bugger calorie wise! Check the label if you've still got it? Tesco houmous is 320 cal for 100g....

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 03/12/2013 12:48

Normal eating day today and I am finding that since I have started this WOL my appetite has decreased as I have also stopped emotional eating, so I find it hard to actually reach my TDEE as it is going against my new found ability to only eat when I am hungry Confused. I think I have posted this before but can't remember what I am meant to do.

Talkinpeace · 03/12/2013 13:02

Bssh I wonder if I dare show Pinupgirl this story ....
www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-25118857

had planned a light lunch today but while running errants popped into the Polish Deli and the cheese called out to me !

Toffee
I think I have posted this before but can't remember what I am meant to do.
If you feel fine and not hungry, enjoy it, because as your weight shrinks, the amount you ARE eating will approach your new lower TDEE
and so, so , so well done on cracking the emotional side of food. THAT is what will last you forever

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 03/12/2013 13:35

But when I did eat less because I wasn't hungry I didn't lose any weight. I know I am over weight so do need to lose more. I am going to google and see where I am in relation to overweight/normal weight.

The emotional gain is the best part. The weight loss is a bonus.

TheEyeofHarmony · 03/12/2013 13:35

Thank you for the arse kicking and advice. FD here have had tea and miso soup so far.

Get well soon all those that are poorly.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 03/12/2013 13:41

Ooooo so close.

Ideal weight is 8 stone 3lbs to 11 stone 2lbs.

Calorie in take should be 1388 to 1784.

Still in the overweight bit not only by a bit.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 03/12/2013 13:43

but only by a bit, not not only Blush.
