Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hola

Wow bennettgirl. Great sv.

bigchoc I'm like you, although I'm not getting the recognition you get for my 3500 blow outs maybe cause I don't say what I ate. I think in your case the frenzy is all the excersise you do. So all self regulating.

In my case it's breast feeding (did I mention that I was bf ever?).

Anyway she's moving to formula AND intriguingly I'm beginning to get all some NSVs. I actually looked at food last night and was less interested in the cake than the low carb savoury stuff.

Working out who people are : sorry, I'm a PITA for remembering snippets about people like garden sizes - its my auditor mindset, but promise that I CBA to work out who people are.

Cold : yup a perpetual problem of being slim as you've taken off the equivalent of several layers of clothing.
And I get Raynauds
The main TiPs tip is : keep your ankles and wrists and neck warm.
Fluffy moccasin type slippers, strappy top with long sleeve thermal top over it and then round / high neck jumpers with sleeves that cover the heel of your hand.
Turning up the heating will make little difference to other than your wallet
the very best thing is to have a HUGE teacup, back to back filled with tea to wrap your hands around Smile

ducky sounds like a tummy bug or trapped food/gas rather than 5:2. Are you managing to do a poo?
annie if I have problems with constipation (though not really related to 5:2 in my case) I find a massive bowl of raw and lightly cooked veg and salad, followed by lots of berries really helps move me the next day. Wholemeal bread also helps me (interestingly porridge with prunes does not).

Schrod I'm like postman and have also found the odd zero calorie 36 hour fast to break through a stall. And I too tend to retain the loss even when reverting to normal 500-cal 5:2.

I have it set on lightly active, so one less than I actually do.

What are liquid fasts?

Report

ducky keep an eye on it. Hopefully it's just trapped wind.
Schrod it means only water, herb tea, black coffee and similar minimal calorie liquids all day; no food at all until the next day.

Marking my place whilst wearing the very lovely size 8 trousers I got from the charity shop. Ok, they're Fat Face so really a 10, bit still quite a confidence boost. I haven't been this small since I was 16!

Bought some firming lotion today to try and deal with the wobbly loose skin on my tummy and thighs. I'm sure it won't work but it's worth a go for £3.50 Smile.

I bought some new bikinis online which should arrive tomorrow. If they fit and I'm feeling confident in them then I'll post a picture!

Re the constipation- I did get it at first on 5:2 but my body seems to have got used to the fasting as no problems now. I do eat plenty of veg and eat lots of seeds so I'm sure that helps (linseeds are supposed to help lubricate the gut).

Hey WriggleBum An 8 is an 8, so be proud! We are proud of you !!
Flowers

Betsy I am ok with NNN and have not broken it once .
However, instead of high-cal sugary junk, I am compensating with masses of sprouted date bread and also fruit. So, much healthier eating and good training, but no cal reduction. I'll try to watch the carbs.

I've now almost entirely replaced bread with sprouted date version, as this causes no bloating even in BigChoc portions.
Also, I just ordered Ezekiel's sprouted fettucine to try. Anyone had that ?

Somewhere You sneaky frenzier ! Am I the only one baring my all about Frenzies ? Maybe the entire thread (except tip) are having massive weekly guzzles, but keeping schtumm.
Conspiracy !

Never had constipation in my life, including with 5:2, maybe due to exercise
Remember the lifters' mantra: we suffer from many icky things (sweaty stringy hair, farting, burping, grunting, yelling) but never constipation.
Start lifting, anyone ?

Two laugh out loud moments, there! Thanks, guys!

Well into a LOF (liquid only fast) ATM and I'm another one feeling the cold - although this may be because the house has been empty for the past few days with the only background heating on.

After putting an extra layer on, my cure is to dance round the kitchen for 10 minutes or so - Benny Goodman's 'Sing, sing, sing' is perfect for this. Although I'm currently perfecting my jive flicks to Van Morrison's 'Moondance' - just the right speed.

About LOFs - I do find them easy, fortunately. I've been baking all day - I'm currently making a large loaf, and, for my philosophy group in the morning, some mincemeat vol au vents (with a bread dough). As long as I don't taste one when they come out of the oven, I know I won't feel any hunger.

Another aspect of an LOF is that it becomes easy to extend it. Tomorrow morning I won't feel like eating - I never like breaking a fast - but if I did, if I kept breakfast and lunch down below 600 calories, the fast can turn into a 48 hour one.

Gotta go, I'm off to do a BreadChat on Twitter for an hour, organised by a Chicago breadmaking group. Grin

Toffee is that a biscuit tin???

Annie I have been suffering constipation last two weeks. Never used to get it with 5:2 and eat plenty veg and drink loads of water, in fact eating habits/activity levels not changed so its a bit of a new one! Got some of that herbal laxative tea in cupboard from when back pain killers used to block me up something chronic. Am tempted to have some before bed, but I get scared with stuff like that Grin bit like getting pregnant..... Once it's in there, you know there's only one way it's coming out! (unless there is such a thing as an elected pooarean???) Hmm

BigChoc are you finding your NNN sprouted pig outs less calorific than a junk frenzy?? Just wondering if this is going to increase loss rate for you and get that last 10lb moving more quickly?...

B&W just reminded me....... THANK YOU BETSY ! X

For shiny new thread and especially for my big hug - it was lovely, and perfect for a cold fast day.

Following on from B&W about cooking while fasting.... How do you all cope with taste testing if you are cooking for others. Dd more often than not eats separately anyway and her food is less involved so easy enough to avoid tasting. But with dp I have taken to just flinging it all in and hoping for best! I do give him the "this may need adjusting" warning before serving up, but that's it. Damned if I'm wasting cals on food I'm not even eating Grin

Could not bake fresh bread though! Drool! I'm not there yet!

Cuckoo - it is a tardis!

I think I have done another FD by accident, or certainly a mini fast.

Breakfast - nothing.
Lunch - M&S tomato soup and sage and onion pave (forgot I had lunch when I said a fast Blush).
Dinner - enchiladas, 1/2 piece of garlic bread slice.
snack toasted teacake.

Cuckoo Sprouted bread is no more calorific than ordinary but it is sooo sweet and yummy that I have several slices, with my current craze of cheese, chorizo, sun-dried tomato pesto, sweet peppers stuffed with more cheese stuffed. Also, I keep nibbling on nuts.

Definitely healthier on NNN, but I think a big HaagenDaz tub and a few muffins would be lower cal !

Back from 90 mins abs and lifting at the gym, I'm enjoying my first cals, beef bouillon. I won't break the fast until lunch tomorrow, so that will be 12 cals total over 36 hrs.

I've noticed my bod is tighter (despite massive Frenzies) so I was very chuffed to have independent confirmation in the changing room:
A girl I train with said suddenly that I've lost weight in bum, thighs & middle and my body shape has changed. She thought 3-4 kg, which I know is double the reality. However, that suggests I'm losing fat and gaining muscle.
Grin
I'm counting that as an NSV !

-First thing in the morning (best time)
-Mix 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice with 1 tablespoon olive oil or flaxseed oil
-Drink it - Do not apply externally or up the bum !

  • Allow up to 5 hrs to work before trying it again

I got completely overwhelmed by the last thread as it took so long to read then I needed to go off and deal with a child before I could post again.

Feeling a bit down in the dumps after 2 failed-ish fds and no weight loss for 3 weeks. Friday I miss timed my meals and ended up so hungry I ate 2 dinners, so probably 800 cals all in. Yesterday I made the mistake of having one crouton which lead to a crouton picking frenzy and a slice of pumpkin pie, so prob came in at 1000.

Also I'm feeling a bit stressed about all the eating occasions ahead. I have 2 kids thanksgiving parties this week followed by one and actual thanksgiving next week, then away for the weekend, then my husband is away for a week and then once he's back we have at least one Christmas do a week. Yikes.

Sorry, bit of a winge there. Good to see some other people having successes though. Keep it up all!

Oh whims don't worry. All of us have had days where we have had more than our total and weeks where we haven't lost anything. Hang in there. Plan your food for fast days and non food treats. I read a tip once to paint your nails or brush your teeth when you are wanting to eat but aren't hungry...

IMPORTANT POINT FOR EVERYBODY OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON
Which runs from Thanksgiving through to New year to be honest

  • try not to snack
  • try to have really light / liquid only at one meal a day (breakfast for a lot of us)
  • try to not drink at least three days a week
  • on drinking days, try to make it only lunch OR supper, not both

watch what skinny friends do .... you'll know what you are loking for

canapes / cocktails : have one of each thing, no more
buffets : only half fill your plate and eat slowly
big meals : fill at least half the plate with veg to restrict carbs
desserts : have a half portion and then go go back for seconds if it is a really good one

you will put on weight
but you will lose it again surprisingly fast

and apologies for the daily heil link, but its the best constructed reporting (so far) of Ross Edgeleys 'experiment

Slightly concerned because my heating never goes above 16. It never goes below 10 either. Once it's on for the winter that is!

Just eaten a full packet of fox's melts. Was I hungry? No. Did I enjoy them? Only the first couple. Thankfully, had done an accidental mini-fast due to busyness and mouldy bread so I haven't gone over. Nevertheless... :(
