Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Scandalised with talk of frenzies and coq. I'll have you know I'm a liddy and such talk will have me reaching for the vapours! (Not the funny faux ciggies though)
I am deeply scared about the next 2 days, Thirsday/Friday, I'm away with work on a kind of jolly ( ok it is a jolly only I'm too old to think of it as such - I just want to stay home!)
My fear comes from 2 points, as well as being a liddy, I'm a dreadful pig & sometime lush. How of I a. Not be a pig and b. Not be a lush and spend Friday worshipping g the porcelain god! I thought when I got older I would grown up, turns out I just got older/shorter/wrinklier

Not2bObvious · 04/12/2013 09:04

do not of Stupid phone

Dotty342kids · 04/12/2013 09:13

oh hitc it's fab to hear from you too Smile and well done on your NSV's. Bet you'll look and feel brilliant in the dress. Photo???
Fasted beautifully yesterday then stuffed my face from 7pm onwards. Seriously. I think I may have to put a padlock on the kitchen door and hide the key from myself Grin.
Self sabotage at its very best Sad
Any tips from others who tend to self sabotage?

BsshBossh · 04/12/2013 09:30

Morning all!

Can everyone (who wants to) share their stats ie current height, start weight, current weight & BMI, goal weight/BMI? I'm just nosey curious.

This is me:
Height - 5ft 4.5
SW - 210 lbs / 15 stones / 95.3 kg / 36 BMI
CW - 131.2 lbs / 9 st 5 / 59.4 kg / 22.17 BMI
GW - 125 lbs / 8 st 13 / 56.7 kg / 21.12 BMI

Please share as it will be nice to see how far we've come.

My original goal weight, which I reached end of May, was 145 lbs (24.5 BMI / 10 st 5 / 65.8 kg) but I quickly realised I would suit a lower weight, so I continued on. It will be interesting to see how I look and feel at my new goal weight...

Christmas has come early....

All shiny and new, just for you lot.....

Not2bObvious · 04/12/2013 09:46

Good idea Bssh
Height 5.4
SW on 18 May '13 was 173 pounds, bmi 29
CW is 157, bmi 27
GW is 137, bmi 23

So I'm 11 stone 3 ('ish) I would so much love to be just an ounce or 2 under 11 stone in 3 weeks, I guess that should be what motivates me not to be a lushy piggy guts! On 16:8 today, aiming for as close to an FD as I can.
Dotty my tip for self sabotage may be be possible for you but I put the kids to bed and then go to bed myself a couple of nights a week, I won't eat in bed. Or I have little rules for weekend treats, if I'm having wine, I can't have choc with it, I have to swap to tea, as I take it black it saves me cals and it does restrain me a bit. Although I of eat rather a lot of crisps with my wine, oh dear might need to work harder on my restraint!

somewherebecomingrain · 04/12/2013 09:58

Morning.

Can't keep up with yous.

This morning I had a single slice of virtually no-carb courgette choc cake with Greek yoghurt, blueberries and a swirl of rice syrup. Total indulgence and I don't feel hungry now. No frenzy ensued.

Concerned I may however have truvia headache. I must do - it's too good to be true. Luckily I think Aussie natvia doesn't do that.

After weekend excess I am only a pound heavier which is within the range of normal ups and downs so pretty happy. I seem to be a maintainer by default but I have to keep reminding myself I plateaud at 11 st 7lb. To plateau again but at 11st is a good thing!

rubbishfamily333 · 04/12/2013 10:38

Hi all, well I'm trying to fast today instead of tomorrow, I may also try to fast on friday or mini fast depending on how I'm feeling.

So I measured myself today to see if I have lost any inches yet and finally I have Xmas Smile 1 inch off my waist and 1 inch off those massive hips, ok its not as many inches as I would like but its progress, and when dd saw me looking at my belly in the mirror this morning she asked if I was pulling it in? She seemed surprised when I said no Xmas Smile.

If I fast 3 times per week am I likely to loose more than a pound per week? I really wanted to be 9.10 by xmas even though I said anything below 10 stone would be good I was really hoping to be 9.10. Today I
was 10.3 so not so likely but still glad its going down.

Also my friend who is two stone lighter than me has also done 5.2 and lost the same amount as me really Shock I thought as I needed to loose more it would come off quicker but clearly not. If I was her weight I would be wanting to put weight on Grin I told her how jealous I am.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 10:42

Okay, Bssh so this is first time I have ever worked this all out like this!

I am 5ft 2.5/ 1.58 mtrs

SW - 181 lbs/ 12st 13lbs/ 82kg/ BMI 32

CW - 161 lbs/ 11st 7lbs/ 73kg/ BMI 29 Xmas Shock

GW - 119 lbs/ 8st 7lbs/ 53kg/ BMI 21 (maybe)

GW - 126 lbs/ 9st 0lbs/ 57kg/ BMI 22 (expected)

April 13 - Stopped drinking alcohol. Lost masses of inches. Lots of comments that I had lost lot more than did. Lost 7lbs.

Sept 19th - Started 5:2. Lost 13lbs.

My target weight is going to be largely dependent on what I look like. At my lightest pre dd I was late 8st mark. When stressed I used to drop weight and at 8st 3lbs looked like stick person with extra large head which was when people used to give me the "You need to put some weight on" remarks!

So I guess it will depend on what the weight is made up of working on basis that muscle is heavier than fat. I probably wasn't that toned back then, youth was still in effect Xmas Grin and my stomach and boobs hadn't been stretched beyond imagination at that point!

rubbishfamily333 · 04/12/2013 10:48

Oh bssh I missed your post

sw - 150lbs (10.10stone) - 4th November
cw - 142.4lbs (10.2.4stone) (after two fd)
goal weight - 126lbs (9stone)

rubbishfamily333 · 04/12/2013 10:53

turkey i am also 5f 2 and feel that 9 stone is ideal for me, a few times I have got under 9stone and felt like I lost my curves, when i loose weight my boobs go which i hate and my hips even go when under 9stone. Normally I'm drying to get rid of my hips then when they go I feel like I look too small without them. Confused

annielewis · 04/12/2013 11:11

Morning all

My stats - lost a bit before I started this WOE but was all post baby weight so am just counting from starting this on 31st Oct

SW - 11st12
CW - 11st3
GW - 9st7

Christmas GW is 10 st anything - like you rubbish

Welcome back MrsF, sorry your H is still being an arse, shall we all club together and get you a new one for Christmas?? Xmas Wink

MelanieCheeks · 04/12/2013 11:30

Height 5'2

Heaviest weight - 157 pounds. I managed to get that down to 10 stone, 140, and then it bounced back up again to 146 last December, so in January this year I started 5:2 ing.

Been maintaining at around 132 pounds for a while, dress size has gone from a 14-16 to an 8-10. 136 pounds is a bmi of 25, so I'm happy to keep under that. I'd like to see 130 on the scale, but that's really just for a bit of wiggle room.

BsshBossh · 04/12/2013 11:39

Loving all these stats. So motivating to read! Keep adding yours ladies and gents.

dingdongduckyfuzz · 04/12/2013 11:46

Height 5'7"
Heaviest recently - 166lbs on 7 Oct BMI 26
Current - 153lbs BMI 24
Target - 140lbs BMI 22

TBH I'm happy at my current weight so anything between 140-150 will do me!

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 04/12/2013 11:55

Height 5'5
Start: 14st 13lb, BMI 35
Current: 9st 8.6lb, BMI 22
Goal: 9st 10lb to 9st 13lb Xmas Blush

Still figuring this maintaining lark out, but I'm guessing that if I achieve SWATH I'll be good!

postmanpatsreindeer · 04/12/2013 12:28

Well done on your inch loss rubbish...skinny times ahead!

not2b you can do this...but enjoy it too, don't go mad and don't beat yourself up over it.

Height - 5ft 4
SW - 10st 1lb / 63.7 kg / 24 BMI
GW - 8st 10lbs / 55.3kg / 20.8 BMI
CW - 8st 2lbs / 51.7kg/ 19.3 BMI

My goal weight is a very distant memory now...have never seen it again since the day I met my target in May and then carried on losing. I've been around 8st 2 give or take 2lbs since the end of July. I was 8st 6 when I got married in 1996 and around 7st 8 at 18 so I'm naturally a lightweight - 5:2 helped me rediscover it and stay there!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 04/12/2013 12:50

Hello everyone

Been out at PIL this morning filling them in with 5 years of stuff DH and I have had to go through. Feel a bit tired now.

Can't join in with the GW, etc as I don't know what it stands for unless goal weight, current weight? Don't know the others.

postmanpatsreindeer · 04/12/2013 13:07

sw = starting weight toffee you guessed the others.

annielewis · 04/12/2013 13:07

Toffee - SW Start Weight, CW Current Weight, GW Goal weight.

BsshBossh · 04/12/2013 13:14

postman we're the same height and I have a hunch that though my goal weight is 8st 13, when I reach it I will go lower. When I was obese I always thought I was large framed but now I'm shedding the flab I actually think I'm petite (even though my wrist-to-finger calculation has me at the medium-to-large border). So getting into lower region of 8 stones may suit me. My key thing is getting as much fat off my tummy as possible and as I'm Asian this is particularly critical.

annielewis · 04/12/2013 13:21

bssh what is the wrist/finger calculation? I love stuff like that.... Grin

BsshBossh · 04/12/2013 13:34

annie here you go:
www.livestrong.com/article/219938-how-to-know-your-body-frame/

On all steps I'm large framed but looking at my entire body I think I look petite so I'm taking my large wrist circumferance as a freak of nature!

somewherebecomingrain · 04/12/2013 13:37

Height 5'6
Pre-5:2 SW 13st 3lb bmi 30
5:2 SW 12st 3lb bmi 27
CW 11st 1lb bmi 25
GW 10st 7lb bmi 23

minifingers · 04/12/2013 13:38

5ft 6

SW - 174lbs (BMI 28)
CW - 168lbs
GW - 140lbs (although I might reconsider if I start to look a bit gaunt before then).

Can't believe I've let myself get to 174lbs. :-(

Greed and complacency. :-(

By hey ho, moving on now. Have already lost lb's in a very short time by fasting, doing mini-fasts and calorie counting. :-)
