Sorry to the ongoing couch to 5k thread but I am looking for others just starting out (and it looks like there might be quite a few of us on popsycal's thread).

So...anyone starting week 1 this week?

MrFibble - I thought you really were a man! But you're not! Unless men get SPD... I don't know the answer to your question ... but I've always found GPs very cautious about this sort of thing, so I always tend to ask the sports coach-type person instead. Do you know any personal trainers with postnatal knowledge eg someone who runs a Pushy Mothers-type class?

I am feeling pleased with myself that I went to the gym on Friday and to an exercise class with DH on Saturday. However the real test is Monday morning, to run round the park whilst Grandma (who is staying over) does baby breakfast, so we shall see!

golemmings · 17/01/2010 21:42

I've just done my first run with Mr Ullrey. (only got the all clear to run from the consultant last week - nearly 5 months after a fairly hefty tear).

It wasn't as bad as I expected - although a bit of me expected it to be easier. My pelvic floor wasn't as firm as I hoped either - definately not going to the gym for a bit or running in daylight!

I'm not sure its wise but I'm trying to do an accelerated programme. (WiR1 today on Tuesday and then W2R1 on Wednesday etc). I was still running 5 miles early in pregnancy - a year ago and I've done a couple of 10 mile kayak races since DD was born so I'm hoping my previous base fitness will help.

I have a duathlon next Sunday which will invove a 2km and a 1 km run either side of a 4km paddle. The paddle should be OK if the canal melts before my planned training session on Friday. If I can't run a consistent 2km by then, there's not much point in entering. If I can't do the January one, then theres always the Feb one.

giddykipper · 17/01/2010 21:49

Now the snow has gone I have no excuse not to go out again. I got up to week 5 in December, but I haven't been out since. I'm shattered tonight but I think I might start week 5 again tomorrow. Or perhaps week 4.

mrsjuan · 17/01/2010 21:55

I did my first one! Hooray

DH is a bit of a safety freak though so I wasn't allowed out of the door until I looked like a complete twat - reflective yellow jacket + 2 flashing thingies

I quite enjoyed it but it was harder than I thought. I've definitely lost a lot of what fitness I had but hopefully if I follow the programme it should all come together.

Pavements round here were starting to get a bit frosty again though so take care everyone.

ellielou02 · 17/01/2010 22:14

Hi Ladies have been on this thread all of twice now . I wonder if anyone has had this problem, I started doing the couch to 5k last year but xmas blah blah blah, then after new year I decided to have another go as what running I had done I really enjoyed so went out but it was when there was still snow/impacted ice on the ground, the day after my kneee started clicking when I walk up the stairs, it is still doing it, seems fine walking, so have been a bit wary about going out running again as dont want to make it worse but really want to run. Its not sore/swollen or hot just clicks, anyone had this and continued to run?

schiaparellipink · 17/01/2010 23:09

Hi everyone, right i'm joining you finally managed to get out tonight and did 2 miles, i was quite pleased considering i am not a runner at all. bllody hard to get going but once i got into the swing of things i actually quite enjoyed it! oh until my pelvic floor started to rebel just as i got towards home. still, things can only get better eh.

MmeLindt · 18/01/2010 07:28

Went out yesterday on my second run, was easier than the first I am happy to report. Might have something to do with the 8°C and sunshine compared to 0°C and grey skies.

Those asking about whether it is safe to run, best to speak to your GP or a physiotherapist type person. I do have slight pain in my ankles and heels but I am hoping that will improve when I get my new shoes and loose a bit of weight. It is quite a burden for the joints, being overweight.

And yes, even if you look like at twat, get reflective gear on if you are going out at night. Especially if you are running alongside a road. Around here they drive like nutters.

DH is very proud of me.

HerMomminess · 18/01/2010 10:08

Morning ladies. Lots of activity-virtual and otherwise.

So relieved my pelvic floor isn' t the only one struggling! Will spare you TMI...just wondering how you are 'dealing' with it golemmings? Very impressed with duathlon plans BTW!

jamaisjedors · 18/01/2010 11:43

hello,
just joining the thread because I now have all the "stuff" (shoes bought in September ) ipod for Xmas, podcasts downloaded (although not on the ipod yet, can't seem to do it...

Want to try to get out at least once this week.

MmeLindt · 18/01/2010 13:47

Bought my shoes today.

I decided to get them here since I would have to pay postage and tax on them and if they don't fit then they are difficult to send back. Will definitely be stocking up on running kit in Scotland when we are over in summer.

HerMomminess · 18/01/2010 14:05

Hey MMeLindt. Woo hoo for new kit. Have you been to Achilles Heel? Just lovely& opened a new sports clinic too. For my impending injuries after miiiiles of running

On a different note: decided to donate (at least) equivalent of what I' ve spent on fitness kit to DEC for Haiti. Fab thread Mme.

Anyone else?

CJCregg · 18/01/2010 14:10

Hello all, can I join in too?

Have done no exercise for months, too broke for gym, have trainers and ancient tracksuit, started diet today so am feeling positive!

Can't be arsed to listen to podcasts, though, is this important?! Don't know why, just have a mental block about it.

Please tell me if I should.

Am planning to start tomorrow once DCs are at school. (Have spent all day inside today doing tax return, no excuse really but am feeling strangely liberated now.)

Good luck/well done to you all.

MmeLindt · 18/01/2010 14:17

Oh, I would love to donate what I spent on my shoes but they cost £200. We live in Geneva, and you don't get anything cheap here. Will definitely be heading for Achilles Heel when we next go to Scotland.

CJ
Yes, do join in. I did try out the podcast but did not like his music. Tbh, it is mainly for the timings, as the bupa training regime that I am following means walking/running at set intervals. I have a app on the iPhone where I can listen to my music and the app beeps at me to change tempo.

If you download the podcast then you have it free.

mrsbaldwin · 18/01/2010 15:48

Inspired by others on the thread I am now off to buy some new running shoes.

I did a run this morning - took about 40 mins but not sure how far as forgot to do my Runkeeper app doh!

ellielou02 · 18/01/2010 18:43

YAY Dr says my knee is fine, just need to get rid of this cold now cant wait to get back out there. mmelindt no wonder you needed a lie down what shoes did you buy?
I am doing the bupa one too but just use my music and have a stop watch that I keep an eye on, tis a bit of a pain though so my try the podcast.

Rollergirl1 · 18/01/2010 19:51

Just finished my second run of Week One. I too found easier than the first. Am finding running for 60 secs and walking for 90 secs too easy though so think I might switch round the other way for the last run.

wuglet · 18/01/2010 21:09

Ooooooowwwwwwwwww!

Not a good idea to run tonight.
fucking knee is fucking fucked

Didn't manage to get past a fast walk/that stupid run you do which is actually slower then walking.

Have decided to take the rest of the week off and do swimming then start week 3 again next week.

Am seeing a physio (socially!) tomorrow so hopefully will get some tips.

On a lighter note I think I would totally have been able to do week 3 cardiovascularly...hopefully will find out next week.

Hope the rest of you have had a better start!

llareggub · 18/01/2010 21:12

Right. The ice age has gone so I have started again. I went out tonight and did day 1 of the Bupa plan over again. It was great! I felt very comfortable and enjoyed every minute. I am looking forward to Wednesday when I can go back out.

I also had an email for Race For Life so may sign up for the 10K. Is that crazy?

CJCregg · 18/01/2010 21:21

I must say, you're all making me laugh a lot which has got to be a good sign. Haven't downloaded yet but am going to GET OUT THERE tomorrow morning, inspired by you lot.

HerMomminess · 18/01/2010 21:50

DH's turn to get exercise so maybe I' ll manage tomorrow.

Hang in there with the knee wuglet!

MmeLindt · 18/01/2010 22:20

Ouch Wuglet.

Rest it properly, no point in trying to push it. Swimming is good.

CJCregg · 19/01/2010 11:23

I did it, I did it! Slightly wobbly now, as have had no exercise for months ... who'd have thought little sixty second runs could be so knackering?!

Bloody hell, though - I could have sworn it said six bursts of running, not bloody eight. Felt so smug after the fourth one, only to hear him say 'you're halfway through' - shite.

Did it, though, and am determined to keep up with it. I can't quite believe that in theory I will be capable of 5k after only eight weeks, but I'm going to try.

Thanks, ladies.

MmeLindt · 19/01/2010 13:11

YAY, well done, CJ.

Am off in an hour for my next run. With my new shoes.

mrsbaldwin · 19/01/2010 15:34

Tried out the Runkeeper app at lunchtime! It's great - but how does it work? I am thinking the phone must beam your position to a satellite via GPS every so often .. because it shows you where you are on a little Google map (in case you didn't know). [emoticon of amazement at the wonders of technology]

Anyway according to app I did 2.5k - but in the laughably pathetic (by previous standards) time of 20mins (altho I did stop to chat to a passing colleague for a couple of mins halfway along the route).

BTW my other colleague showed me her Nike running show which has a little thing embedded inside, like a pedometer, which transmits data to your Ipod. Amazing ...

HerMomminess · 19/01/2010 17:07

Mme, have you got diamonds on the soles of your shoes??
