Sorry to the ongoing couch to 5k thread but I am looking for others just starting out (and it looks like there might be quite a few of us on popsycal's thread).

So...anyone starting week 1 this week?

Go for it, MrF. I am very unfit at the moment. Got to start somewhere.

Rollergirl1 · 14/01/2010 18:02

Right well I'm now all kitted out and ready to go. Think i'll do my first run on Saturday. I have downloaded those Robert Ullreys podcasts. They are quite annoying but I think I need someone to tell me when to change pace otherwise I'll be forever looking at my watch!

wuglet · 14/01/2010 20:16

Never too late to get fit MrF!

( I feel that by being the OP of this thread I have somehow become endowed with Fitness Knowledge which is frankly bizarre given that I am a huffermoose statuesque laydee)

I have become Proper Committed as well and spent a ridiculous amount on some proper running shoes to correct my over-pronation and low arches don't y'know.

Will try them out tomorrow morning...they better be good.

Ok, off to Achilles heel tomorrow to check feet haven' t changed shape since pg.Everything else seems to be sagging/different to say the least.

MrFibble · 15/01/2010 12:46

Um. Maybe I should start on Monday to fit in with the plan but the problem is when!??? How do you ladies with DC, jobs and other responsibilities find the time? I will need a head torch for running by the time I finally am able to leave the house in the evenings.

Rollergirl1 · 15/01/2010 15:22

Mr Fibble: Well other than the weekends I will be running once the kids have gone to bed and DH is home. So 8pm or later. I don't mind a bit of darkness. As for being cold I have it on good authority that a couple of layers on top, with the lower layer being of breathable fabric and some running tights should suffice in this weather.

You'll have to come up with some better excuses.

mrsbaldwin · 15/01/2010 16:46

Mr Fibble: this is a good point about how to find the time - I was wondering the same thing myself this morning. I like running etc in the morning, but DH leaves for work no later than 7am and I have to do the nursery drop-off and then go straight to work.

I tried running (part of the way) home from work, which was fine in itself - but I'm mostly too tired to do it (baby still not sleeping through night).

So I thought I'd try a combo of planning and opportunism. This morning I went to the gym after I'd done the nursery drop-off and before I went to the office. Weekend is OK as DH is about. Monday and Tuesday I have grandmas so may be able to go out for a quick spin round the park early, when they take over. I also thought if I left my tracskuit and all the gear in a special 'ready to run' basket I could just chuck 'em on if an unexpected morning opportunity came up.

What do other ppl who like mornings but also have to go to work do???

HerMomminess · 15/01/2010 18:37

Interesting: acc to running experts my heel strike/foot arch etc has changed since pg. So back on full support anti pronation. Just a thought is you' re recenlty back to running after a pregnancy.

Before the cynics have a go: I was going to buy a pair anyway!

ClaudiaSchiffer · 15/01/2010 21:27

Hi there, can I join? I've been for my first run in . . . . um. . . years this morning. I did 4.5K in 40 mins so feel FANTASTIC.

Actually when I say run I really mean walk with a bit of running at times. I'm hoping to up the distance to 5 k and half the time to 20 mins.

I am using Runkeeper too Mmelindt.

MrFibble I am 41 so 40 is deffo not to old to get fit. Frankly I think it's now or just give up entirely.

I have too much junk in my trunk and want to shift a stone. Rather irritatingly I had shifted all my baby weight a year or so ago and have now put it all on again.

MmeLindt · 15/01/2010 21:32

Ran outside for the first time today, and may I say that it is vastly different to using the XT.

Bloody hell, but I am unfit. I ran/walked 2.5km. Some of the time though snow/slush. Definitely need proper running shoes, my ankles were a bit sore. Possibly from sliding a bit in the snow. Will go into town tomorrow. Really really wish I lived in UK though, they are so expensive here.

I am SAHM so can run when the DC are in school.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 15/01/2010 21:36

MrsBaldwin I aim to go 7am (ish) Sat and Sunday with the dog whilst dh has the kids, then Wed and Thur I'll drop the kids off at nursery by 8.15am and do a quick 40 mins before work (!!!!). I'm fortunate though as work from home so can be flexible with my start time.

Also am fortunate as in Australia and have no snow to contend with.

I have 20yr old running shoes - do you think I need flash new ones? [hopeful ]

HerMomminess · 15/01/2010 22:34

MmeLindt I thought you ordered a new pair from Achilles Heel?

Gave my new ones a try on treadmill...amazing difference.

Ditto walk/run scenario

Oh well to bed with Runners world for inspiration!

ClaudiaSchiffer · 16/01/2010 08:55

Right it's 7pm in Oz now, as well as my run (!) I have walked into the village (about another 2k) so feel pretty smuggery smug and pleased with myself. This is more exercise in ohe day than I've done for ages.

Hopefully I won't sieze up overnight and never do any again.

I hope the snow clears soon for the rest of you.

MmeLindt · 16/01/2010 08:57

Claudia
Yes, you do need new running shoes. I read somewhere that you should buy new ones every 300 to 400 miles.
Oh, and congratulations on your pregnancy

I did buy shoes from Achilles heel but I am so stupid, I ordered the wrong size. So I will have to send them back. Doh.

MmeLindt · 16/01/2010 08:58

XP, Wow, well done Claudia.

I am jealous of your non-snowy run. Still lots of snow here.

mrsjuan · 16/01/2010 11:30

Finally - snow has gone so I can start running

Think I'm going to be busy exercise wise for the next few months - have also agreed to do a 31mile rowing race in September .

Haven't rowed for 2 years now so should be fun getting back in training.

tribpot · 16/01/2010 11:43

Well I have my new running shoes in preparation for the 5K at the end of March. The snow is melting but definitely not gone so not sure exactly when I will start, thinking about going on the treadmill at the gym tomorrow but not sure I'd be very good at the walk-run-walk of the training plan?

Rollergirl1 · 16/01/2010 12:49

Did my first run/walk/jog this morning in the rain. My legs are already aching a little so god knows what they'll be like tomorrow!

I really enjoyed it though, so have high hopes of keeping it up.

As for when I'll do it. On the days that I work from home and the kids are at Nursery i'll go out during the day at some point. Otherwise will have to be evenings and weekends.

HerMomminess · 16/01/2010 20:39

When do we actually see DH/DP' s if evenings etc is spent pounding pavements/treadmills?? I can feel the issue creeping up.

catchingzeds · 16/01/2010 20:57

Had my first run today too and discovered I'm in embarrassingly bad shape

I'm following the Bupa training plan and struggled to run for the full minute! Determined to stick with it though, I gave up smoking 5 months ago and this is the next step to dragging my body back into shape.

I'll have to do my training evenings and weekends too, quite grateful to be able to hide in the dark actually

MrFibble · 17/01/2010 07:57

Sorry - another procrastinating question from me.

I had really bad SPD - DS is now 2 but it has taken me at least a year to recover enough to walk properly and I still have twinges in my lower back / pelvis. Is running a really daft idea or will it help me get fit again? No matter what I will wait until the ice is gone as slipping is the worse thing for me.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 17/01/2010 07:58

Hermomminess - do you think your dh will complain if you're out for an hour? Can you go first thing in the morning instead?

I would quite happily leave dh for an hour in the evenings but then I am mean and he is currently grumpy .

I did my second run today, man I ached! So basically walked most of it - still managed 5ish K but not really much running involved. Am hoping that my next outing (Tuesday?) will be better.

HerMomminess · 17/01/2010 12:18

Hi Claudia. No, DH is a darling, but i guess I feel guilty. Although the 30-60 min on my own has done my brain/nody the world of good.He understands and is happy with it.

Went outside for a run/walk today. Still an icerink over here, but nice to get my new shoes dirty.

wuglet · 17/01/2010 15:47

I am due to start week 3 tomorrow but am getting a lot of gyp from my knee. Hoping that I can run through it....

mrsjuan · 17/01/2010 16:38

I'm going out for my first run (walk/run) tonight

I've downloaded one of the podcasts to help me through it -looking forward to it.
