I have varied over the years with what works and definitely learned I have to go with whatever does at the time. I absolutely need a class structure for weight training though. I have no will power to do it alone. I love the solitude of pool swimming but my sea dips are definitely social. And while I'd run happily by myself, having ds with me these days is lovely, mainly for the chance to have him to myself for half an hour. Like this evening.

I ended up with an unplanned rest day yesterday, work and child ferrying meant I didn't get to my s&c class and given it was squats I didn't mind too much but I managed a walk while one kid was at football so all wasn't lost.

Thanks motherforkin! Can’t believe we have reached the end of another thread. Mumsnet tells me there have been 22 posts since my last one so I have a bit of catching up to do.

Did do a Nat Hayward mini band workout this morning

Unbelievably I was at ANOTHER gym branch today. This one is close to my book group. I didn't realise there was one on that side of town, and it meant I avoided traffic at rush hour.
Just did cardio and a bit of stretching.

No 23. I think.

BezMills · 17/09/2025 12:31

Thanks for the thread and for @ing me @MotherForkinShirtBalls

Just back from Crossfits. Today we were working on progressions for pullups then had a bladdy tough workout. 2 minute ski erg, 1 minute situps, 20 pushups or as many in a minute. Times FIVE. It was almost amusing watching my ski erg numbers drop though the floor round by round. Round 1 I was like 10m off the target distance. Round 5, probably got to half way. I endured rather than enjoyed it - often the way with the Crossfit workouts. Could barely work the controls in the car on the way home, arms completely trashed. Thank the lord for power steering all I can say.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 17/09/2025 15:34

Those against the clock endings are brutal, Bez. I don't know if every minute on the minute or as many round as possible are worse. Sounds like a great workout though.

I had a swim at lunchtime but it wasn't great. There's always 3 lanes (slow for plodder like me, medium which takes the over flow from the fast lane, so too fast for me, and fast) then a double width lane for people doing water rehab. All good and everyone knows where they fit, lots of regulars. But today the school connected to the leisure centre arrived in with a mob of kids for free swimming, taking over the double width area meaning everyone else had to budge over. I'm by no means fast but I can keep a steady pace, but with the rehab people chucked into the slow lane it was completely unmanageable for everyone. I asked about it on my way out and it'll be like that for the rest of the school year so I'm going to have to either find another pool or rejig my schedule. Annoying either way.

Alittlefrustrated · 17/09/2025 20:16

There's only one lane at my pool MotherForkinShirtBalls - usually it's a fast lane, then a couple of hours a week they make it the medium lane. The rest of the pool is a free for all/chaos 😤
1 hr pilates class today -lots of leg work with mini bands, so that will be interesting tomorrow.
160.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 17/09/2025 21:07

Annoyingly frustrated, it's only lunchtime swims that have multiple lanes, mostly it's one lane and a free for all unless it's official swimming lessons.

Blimey to crossfit workouts.

LondonGalll · 18/09/2025 00:23

CrossFit obsessed lady here! Best thing I’ve got into in my 50s

Happleandhorange · 18/09/2025 04:22

They sound like a version of our ceremony classes, but more intense. It's great to hear about from safe perspective of sofa.

StrongLikeMamma · 18/09/2025 07:01

Ooo hello! 👋
Just found this thread please can I join you all? Really need to stay on track with regular exercise, and up my frequency.
I have been seeing a PT for a while and try to go to the gym an additional 2 times a week, but just want to make sure I do something every day of the week now. Stressful desk job, kids, elderly parents don’t help. Neither does a looming 50th! 🙀

BezMills · 18/09/2025 12:14

Welcome @LondonGalll and @StrongLikeMamma !

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 18/09/2025 13:21

Hello @LondonGalll alll and @StrongLikeMamma. This is a lovely group for a chat and helping me keep a but of momentum going.

S&c this morning. Followed by a visit to the physio. As expected, my left shoulder is following the right and I have supraspinatus tendon impingement but not actually hitting frozen shoulder territory, thank gods. I have to reduce weights for a bit and balance my push and pull exercises, as well as the specific exercises she has given me. And hopefully a three/four month recovery instead of the 18 months last time. And I've ordered marine collagen in the hope that it lives up to its joint health hype!

Welcome LondonGalll and StrongLikeMamma!
4.5 mile dog walk today - I've decided to risk having him back 1 day a week, whilst staying away from what I now know are new Tick hotspots!

Happleandhorange · 18/09/2025 20:33

Oh I do hope your shoulder is OK @MotherForkinShirtBalls . Frozen shoulders are so awful. I am permanently paranoid that I will get one on the other side.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 19/09/2025 10:35

Checking into the new thread. 30DS L1 done this morning. I fear I do it because it's intense but not impossible for an unfit middle aged woman and it's all done (including getting the weights and mat out and putting them away) in 30 minutes. I'd love to enjoy exercise but I don't, so grim determination is all I have, and sometimes it fails me.

BezMills · 19/09/2025 13:45

Was at the Crossfits today. Today was the first session of bench press, since the gym bought some shiny new benches. No heroics today, was in a group with a couple of chaps, one seemed about one notch stronger, and the other by the size of him, a LOT stronger. They got up to 60KG, I think the big lad probably had 100 in him, the medium sized chap was kind of topping out at 60. I was like nah, and did my own thing. I was quite satisfied with that.

The workout was stupidly hard, so very crossfit. So we did about 1 minute rowing at high intensity then straight on for 30s max reps of jumping pullups (or those swingy ones if you got those. which I don't got). The idea is to get us out of breath and tired in the exact muscles we need for pullups, because yanno CrossFit.

StrongLikeMamma · 19/09/2025 15:37

PT session today.
Tiny bit of gardening.
Am knackered!

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 19/09/2025 23:53

So am I @Happleandhorange , getting the first one back to function was pretty bad, and it'll never be fully right.

Run with DS this evening in the rain meaning we went faster than usual and now I'm sore.

After a couple of days dominated by art exhibition, got back to gym tonight. Was there just before closing which is very nice and quiet, an almost meditative feel.
Did my hour of cardio, which is my focus for this six week stretch, and strength on legs.

No. 24.

StrongLikeMamma · 20/09/2025 09:33

Serious question: Terrible DOMS here from the gym yesterday. How do I feel like doing more exercise the following day when one session breaks me?

BezMills · 20/09/2025 11:41

I am the same! Just need to do something different on the next day.

Happleandhorange · 20/09/2025 12:28

I have no solution, I am afraid to confess that I avoided going back to the classes that did that to me! I am not planning on avoiding forever, just that whilst I get used to exercise again I am very scared of injuring myself (further)

There was an awful incident on way home from gym tonight. Some gang were having a fight at one of the traffic light junctions and blocking us all in. I may avoid that route in future after dark.

BezMills · 20/09/2025 15:43

God how scary @Happleandhorange , glad you're ok

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 20/09/2025 15:53

Glad you got through OK Happle. Hope you're not too shaken.

On the DOMS, I tell myself it's a price to pay in getting stonger, while I sob trying to go for a pee. They do eventually get better!

S&c this morning. Lots of changes to accommodate my shoulders including a specific instruction from the physio not to do burpies. Oh well 😁. Unfortunately hoovering the house this afternoon was harder to avoid.
