Gym tonight. Got there to realise the strapping had come off my ankle, so hastily reordered what I was planning to do to try to make sure I didn't over exert it. Thus an unplanned strength and conditioning session.
Arms are definitely improving with all the patient encouragement, my left arm must be so bored of having to wait for my right one to recover! But it's definitely all improving, I noticed I was moving heavier weights more easily tonight even than a week ago, so that was a good feeling. Going to restrap ankle in a bit and take dog for brisk walk to get heartrate up before bed.

I am the same! Just need to do something different on the next day.

I just need to keep going, even when I don’t feel like it I guess! I’m very easily put off exercising at the slightest blip 🙈

Was out at a party last night and danced for about 5 hrs. Going for a gentle dog walk today!

Back to the gym tomorrow.

I have no solution, I am afraid to confess that I avoided going back to the classes that did that to me! I am not planning on avoiding forever, just that whilst I get used to exercise again I am very scared of injuring myself (further)

There was an awful incident on way home from gym tonight. Some gang were having a fight at one of the traffic light junctions and blocking us all in. I may avoid that route in future after dark.

Oh god that’s really scary. Where are you? Glad you’re ok 💛

Happleandhorange · 21/09/2025 11:51

Im in New Zealand

JudgingJudy · 21/09/2025 22:22

I did a 100k cycle today. Beautiful Autumn weather for it. My longest cycle since I had Covid a month ago. I'll sleep well tonight!

FurForksSake · 21/09/2025 22:40

Hello, can I tentatively join you? Are the numbers how many days you’ve exercised for?

I am early 40s and waiting for hip surgery and just been told by the surgeon I have to do lots of physio, hydro, cycling and swimming to prepare for the surgery. I’m in agony and on long term sick from my job and he’s told me it’ll be worse before better, so some motivation to keep going will be needed.

Most days I do very little, I was doing Pilates at home prior to my hip going and adding in some walking. I was about to start viewing gyms with the hope of doing strength training but that’s out for now.

Happleandhorange · 22/09/2025 01:25

Hi, for forks sake. I am longterm disabled if that helps. This is a great thread for support and motivation, I have found. Your journey definitely sounds a challenge.
My numbers are for every workout since I joined group. Not sure about everyone else. At 50 I shall have a small treat and at 100 a bigger one. Both will probably involve cake (and diabetic meds immediately afterwards)

Happleandhorange · 22/09/2025 08:06

Went to gym today after cinema trip to Downton Abbey, our teens were weirdly keen on it!
I was at one of branches with mad parking restrictions so it was good to stop and check with the front desk that they would support a disabled appeal if required. Went on the elliptical and bravely upped my resistance level, I managed it better than I feared I would so that was cause for celebration. Found the functional area this time so did some stretches and gentle teeny tiny dumbbells. I look less absurdly incompetent when I check my form in mirror now so that is great.

BezMills · 22/09/2025 09:46

well done @Happleandhorange - I think one of the biggest things we do in the first weeks and months is just getting over that gym impostor syndrome. You have every right to be in the gym and you belong there just as much as anyone else! But it takes a minute to get over that doesn't it. Just keep turning up, you're going great.

I've been getting slightly obsessed with pullups - it's what I'm like - I just latch onto something that's challenging and interesting and that's my thing for a while.

I've been watching some really good youtube content and decided it's definitely time to go back to the absolute basics of shoulder mobility and body awareness, rather than worrying about pushing my reps and sets up. I had a massage on Friday and I asked the masseur what bits were especially bad - she just said "pretty much your whole back". Lol.

FurForksSake · 22/09/2025 10:22

Thanks for the welcome and the explanation @Happleandhorange! Well done on your work out. I like the idea of counting the workouts and getting some rewards! I might think about a hot stone massage at 50 and a pair of expensive gym leggings for 100!

years ago I went to a gym to do the milon circuit and I found that really good for my difficulties. I think the gym has rebranded it to an over 55s or something so I’ll need to look into whether there’s anywhere locally that does it.

Happleandhorange · 22/09/2025 10:47

Hot Stone Massage sounds amazing.

In exciting news, a friend has decided she wants to try same gym. She's coming on Wednesday. We're going to do the Core class together, on the grounds it is the only one available at the time she is free.
I've suggested we stay at the back and take lots of breaks/do stretches rather than try to do the whole thing at full throttle, it is only 30 minutes but I bet that means it is very intense!

She is 50+ and has not exercised in a long time so let's hope the experience doesn't put her off for life.

BezMills · 22/09/2025 11:20

Core is fantastic, although I wouldn't say it was the most enjoyable class (BodyCombat and Barre were much more fun for me), I always said it was the most effective 30 minutes of my week.

The instructor should give you options that you can do, and of course you can sandbag and take rests as you want. I noticed that the warmup to Core feels particularly gnarly the first few times, but the rest of the class isn't so bad. So don't lose heart in the first 5 minutes - just give it a go and stick with it!

Happleandhorange · 22/09/2025 11:55

Thank you, that's really good to know.

Alittlefrustrated · 22/09/2025 20:39

1 hour pilates class
162.
Welcome all newcomers - I'm loving seeing new names joining, it's very encouraging.
I've had a poor August and September so far, but hoping to pick things up again this week.
Onwards and upwards, and don't look back, is my motto. No point in dwelling on what you didn't do 😁

roonetta · 23/09/2025 08:15

I last posted a week ago and am loving all the new joiners. 37 new messages! Welcome everyone 👋. I will have a proper catch up on the thread later.

I have been rubbish this last week at doing anything, and have no excuse, just poor motivation. Hoping to do better this week.

45 minute Nat Hayward strength workout

77 (I think)

Oops looked back and only on 76 Blush

Thank god I read your message just now. Have been feeling sluggish since big late night out at the weekend 🙄
Back too it! 💪🏼

Happleandhorange · 23/09/2025 11:36

Yes, so true!
It's Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) so not doing anything vigorous today. Had a nice walk along the beach after Tashlich in the afternoon.

FurForksSake · 23/09/2025 19:47

Gosh I’m exhausted!

physiotherapy this morning (and parked further away than intended) and then hydro this afternoon. I’m counting that as exercise! Everything aches now and I’m sure it’ll be worse tomorrow. I think I’m going to hook my tens machine up in a bit.

Alittlefrustrated · 23/09/2025 19:47

Brisk 3 mile walk this morning.
1 hour Line Dancing class tonight - it was fast and I was sweating! It's a new class and easily 100 people turned up.
I can only do it alternate weeks due to choir being same night, but I'll be back 🤠
163.

FurForksSake · 23/09/2025 20:01

My husband asked if we could do line dancing when my hips are fixed, I think he’s missed how hyper mobile and uncoordinated I am!

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 23/09/2025 20:30

Line dancing sounds fun.

I was in the sea Sunday and yesterday. It's getting colder but the sun was shining yesterday so we were accidentally in for 25 mins. S&c today but I really didn't enjoy it.

Yes line, dancing sounds great. I think I'll try the dance class at gym when my ankle is fixed.

Happleandhorange · 24/09/2025 00:26

My friend came to Core class. She was amazing, all bendy and bouncy. I hate her now :-)
We're in cafe now. Making sure we get back those calories :-)

No 27

Happleandhorange · 24/09/2025 01:39

Turns out she joined on the spot. This is good news as it will give me an incentive to persist :-)
