Training for a half marathon-anyone else?

This weekend I'll be running 10k/6 miles. Plan is to increase by 1 mile a week.

It has been years since I ran a half marathon.

When is your race?
I'm doing one in September. I did the same one last year but was ill so trying again to see if I can do it a bit faster!

I am doing one on this day too in Worcester. 4th time doing it and my mum is doing the 10K! (She was not a runner before last year but did C25K with a running group and they all encourage each other!)
I am doing 12K today and my club run is Monday.

Happierwithouthim · 25/05/2024 10:27

Mines in Charleville, Cork Ireland, it's known as flat & fast. I'm not fast, but hoping I'll improve on my time as training continues.
There's a 2.5 hour cut off

Hi. Also training for a half here. Doing one mid July and another mid September. Did 8km today after a low mileage, busy work week. Although I seem to have strained my adductor muscle this morning without realising it - has anyone experienced this? It’s not terribly sore but definitely hurt.

Whiskeyandkittens · 25/05/2024 19:58

I'm doing the Robin Hood Half in Nottingham, it was much hillier than I was expecting last year so am actually adding some targeted hill training into my running so it doesn't nearly kill me this year!

Happierwithouthim · 26/05/2024 08:41

Hills are the enemy, I slow down to almost a snails pace, even walking inclines continue to challenge me after losing over 3st I thought this would improve.

Well done on your 10k you did it!
I’m in half marathon training for Oxford Half which is also flat and fast in October

febbabies2023 · 27/05/2024 20:05

Not specifically training for a half marathon, but I'd like to be able to reach that goal.

Did 1 10k and one 11.5k last week, so I'm getting there slowly and enjoying it. I do want to sign up for one but I've only been road running for the last 2 1/2 weeks so I think I need to give it some time before I sign up to one!

ACynicalDad · 27/05/2024 20:07

I used to run to parkrun then do a parkrun for the final 5k (or middle 5k) meant not all of it was alone.

Happierwithouthim · 27/05/2024 20:19

That's interesting way @ACynicalDad would you be waiting around for a period of time for parkrun to start?

I printed out my park run barcode, going to go to it & hoping it'll improve my speed

ACynicalDad · 27/05/2024 21:23

I guess it depends how well you planned, ten mins of stretching part way through your run is great for you anyway.

Happierwithouthim · 16/06/2024 19:16

Wanted to do 7 miles today but wasn't feeling it so did this instead

Fastest 5k

I'm doing one late September. Did 6k last week and aiming for 8k this week then 10k the week after etc. My training will prob get derailed a bit when we're on hols in August but I'm hoping to do a 10-mile run before I go and then pick it up again when I get back.

Happierwithouthim · 17/06/2024 20:39

I'm away from Sun to New York I'll do plenty of walking but no running there unless maybe on treadmill in the gym.

Deffo no long runs anyhow.

I got out and did 7 miles this evening, I'm a morning run person for sure, but it's done & four PBs!!

If you're consistently doing 10 miles of running per week you should be able for half is what I used to hear when I last trained for one I'm hoping that's true

@Baddaybigcloud I'm doing Oxford too (hopefully). I can even run 5 miles yet, so I'll have a challenging three months ahead.

Steala · 17/06/2024 21:28

Can't even run 5 miles

Happierwithouthim · 18/06/2024 09:23

Charleville Half cut off is 2.5 hours.

I really need to improve my speed but I've 3 months I'll get it done Hmm

4 miles is the longest run since my last post, drove an 8 mile route this morning leaving out bottles of tailwind for myself.
Mentally battled, then battled with my legs so I stopped running at 5 miles. I've a 10k booked for next Sunday morning and I'll add a mile a week every week then.

In the meantime there were holidays and alcohol plus the death of a friend and I'm changing jobs lots of challenges.

How's everyone else doing?

I'm training for the Cannock Chase half in October. It's a very hilly course and I've not managed even a 10K without walking up the hills. My mileage (kms) is getting higher all the time, 12K last week, 14 this week. Hopefully if I can get to 18-19K straight running I can complete my half even if I walk some of it.

Got a 10K race next weekend too.

Hi, just found this thread - I am also training for Oxford HM - my first. I am nervous as I find i get to 8/9k and its a battle to keep motivation. I have a 14k run scheduled tomorrow which i am dreading a bit.

Happierwithouthim · 08/08/2024 23:58

I had my work leaving party on Friday night, over indulged, did my best to rehydrate on Sat & ran the 10k on sun, didn't do great time but I did it and got through it. I haven't run since but have my gear with me so going to get a run in tomorrow somewhere and do a long one then on Sunday

Happierwithouthim · 08/08/2024 23:59

Buffy if you can identify that as your issue hopefully you can conquer it

I can't do hills even when I did a hilly half years ago I seriously struggled with them.
