Training for a half marathon-anyone else?

This weekend I'll be running 10k/6 miles. Plan is to increase by 1 mile a week.

It has been years since I ran a half marathon.

I bought new asics & everlasting shorts, I don’t wear shorts, going to be brave tomorrow!

Turns out shorts were compression shorts, they’re going back!

I did my planned marathon a few weeks ago, but wasn't happy with how it went. The weather was terrible, the hills were horrendous, and I wasn't as prepared for a trail marathon as I hoped.

So today I did a secret marathon - I only told my partner about it - and finished in 5:30. I'm so much happier with how it went. The first half felt really strong, and although I struggled a bit in the second half I managed to finish in a time I'm thrilled with.

Secret marathon I love it, was it a booked one or did you just head off & do 26.2 miles?

I did 10 miles today as my long run.
half is on 4th July but there’s a local one in 3 weeks. I haven’t booked it yet but I think I might! It’s a hilly one. Bought shorts on shein they’re ok.

I booked it, but I didn't tell anyone other than my partner. It was amazing and I loved it! I had hoped I'd only do one marathon, but now I want to do it again. It won't be soon, though. I've already booked a few 10k's and two halves in for the summer/autumn.

I wear Sweaty Betty Power shorts, but I buy them on Vinted rather than paying full price. They are good, but I've never tried wearing any other shorts so have nothing to compare to.

You'll definitely be able to complete the half in 3 weeks if you're up to 10 miles now. I just hope the weather gets a bit cooler for you!

I always wear my gym shark pocket shorts for races. They’re so soft and comfortable with big pockets. I have lots of other shorts I’ll wear on training runs but always stick to these for race day.

I went for a run this morning in some Lucy Locket Loves shorts. I don't recommend them. They had one zipped pocket at the back but it wasn't big enough to hold my phone while in it's case, and there's no side pocket for my tissues. The other issue was that they kept feeling like they were falling down.

The run was amazing though. I've got some new shoes - Saucony Endorphin Azura - and I'm so happy with them.

Cautiously dipping my toes in here as considering signing up for my first HM next year. I have two 10ks over summer and a 15k trail race later in the year and then I'll maybe shift focus to HM training.

That's disappointing about the shorts, @DuckWithOneWing ! I just got some shorts from HappyStride and delighted with them; they've just bought out some endurance ones that have an in-built running belt as well as side pockets on the inner shorts so loads of room for gels, tissues, phone etc. Really pleased with them although they weren't cheap (but they have 30% off at the moment so sitting on my hands lest I buy more!)

I need to buy some trail shoes if anyone has any suggestions! I run in Brookes Ghosts and Brookes Glycerin and really like them, but open to other makes!

DuckWithOneWing · 05/06/2026 20:02

I did my trail marathon in Hoka Speedgoats, and loads of other people were also wearing them. I think Salomon is also another popular make although I've never tried any of their shoes.

I used to be a Brooks fan, but I've recently switched to Saucony for my road shoes.

hugasaurus · 05/06/2026 23:51

Thanks! Coincidentally after my post I saw some Salomon trail shoes on for a very reduced price in one colourway only so I nabbed the last pair and will see how I get on!

DuckWithOneWing · 01/07/2026 11:00

I've just got my rejection email telling me I'm not running the London Landmarks Half next year! I don't mind too much though, as I haven't started planning next year's races yet as it seems far too early.

How are you getting on with the Salomons @hugasaurus?

TealReader · 01/07/2026 14:46

Can I join? Ran my first half in many many years a few weeks ago on a very hot day with an Achilles niggle which kicked off big time around 15km in. So was disappointed with my time but signed up to another in September to try and improve. I’m pretty slow and also very injury prone but enjoying running at the moment.

Also got my rejection for London landmarks.

DuckWithOneWing · 09/07/2026 15:02

I got a place in the London Marathon!

TealReader · 10/07/2026 16:10

Amazing! Congrats! I got a rejection from London marathon and London landmarks half but wasn’t expecting to get in.
