This weekend I'll be running 10k/6 miles. Plan is to increase by 1 mile a week.

It has been years since I ran a half marathon.

I did it!

Didn't get under 3 hours, but I think I knew I wouldn't. I'm just so happy I completed it.

Whiskeyandkittens · 29/09/2024 14:38

Oh well done @Fishingforworkideas and @DuckWithOneWing !

I did it too, still in shock at my time! I was aiming for 02:15, and sorting hoping I could get under 02:10 if I had a good run - I actually finished in 02:02:53!
I have been running on and off for over 10 years now and have never ran that fast for that long in my life!
To think I nearly deferred a couple of weeks ago!

Codlingmoths · 29/09/2024 14:39

Well done!! I have just read all your updates from the start, as I did my first 10km since my now 2.5 year was born today. In a few years I think I might try to do a half marathon. (I did one many years ago, training time is a lot more limited now)

Hawkerslife · 29/09/2024 14:58

Well done on the races today! Anyone else doing the Royal Parks Half in 2 weeks? I'm doing that, then the Great South just a week later! Not going to go flat out for the Royal Parks (famous last words) but hoping for sub 2.10-2.15.

I've got another November half I'm going to target for a pb (sub 2hr).

Fishingforworkideas · 29/09/2024 15:13

Well done everyone! Today made me realise what a long distance it is, we can be really proud of ourselves!

I know what you mean @Happierwithouthim DH keeps asking if I want him to make me any food but I'm not even hungry weirdly.

Wow that's brilliant it definitely would have been a shame to defer! It's amazing how much the adrenaline pushes you on the day. Dangerously so as I did my fastest 10k in years in the first part of the race and almost burnt myself out!

Forestcantrun · 29/09/2024 15:50

Amazing runs everyone!

Whiskeyandkittens · 29/09/2024 16:14

@Fishingforworkideas I've had exactly the same problem with DH keeping offering me food and me not wanting any!
Just had a lovely long soak in the bath and am starting to feel a bit more human now - also ate the popcorn that was in my race goodie bag!

You should definitely start slower I am sure if you run defensively at the start you can run even faster in the second 10k and that would get you a PB or the sub 2 hour whichever it is you want. I've done it myself many times.

I'm aiming for a PB next March (1:45, my current best time on the half is 1:48:18)

Since starting over 20 years ago I've worked myself up from my first half which was 2:28 something to this. You learn from the experience. Plus the long slow runs help and I always need to get out of the house (husband and two loud boys)

NoKnit · 29/09/2024 16:52

Forgot to say we'll done to everyone that raced today.

I did a 13.2km trail race over over 280 elevation gain yesterday. Then today a 30km long training run as doing a marathon end of October. I'm shattered today but will sleep well tonight for sure.

Whiskeyandkittens · 29/09/2024 17:06

Does anyone else feel a little bit teary and emotional on the start line when everyone's about to set off or am I just a bit soft?

weareallqueens · 29/09/2024 17:22

Well done everybody! Especially the 2.02 - that's fab!
Mine is next Sunday. Undecided what to do training wise, this week, although circumstances are currently dictating quite a quiet week, running wise, due to childcare and other various bits dragging on my time.

I was reading up on carb loading, but it seems that's pretty much my diet at the moment. Grin

Fishingforworkideas · 29/09/2024 17:30

@noknit, yes I definitely needed to pace better today and might have gotten closer to my PB (which was 10 years ago and before babies so would have been a stretch anyway!) I'm usually quite good at pacing myself, not sure why I got carried away!

@whiskeyandkittens me! I'm not too bad at the start line but during the race when spectators were clapping or shouting 'well done' I was struggling to hold back tears. I get very tearful just watching too, I find it very emotional watching people try their best at something!

Pickingmyselfup · 29/09/2024 17:37

Your timings are impressive! I have 2 weeks until mine and I'm aiming for anything under 3 hours even if that's 2:59:59!

One more long run to go which I'm very happy about, I'm getting a bit fed up now. I did 16km on Friday which was tough and my 8km today felt really tough.

I cry at the start of a long race, and also at the pack collections! I find it very emotional and a bit overwhelming but then get on with it.
I fully expect to be bawling my eyes out at the startline in a few weeks🤣

weareallqueens · 29/09/2024 19:34

I'm normally too busy trying to fight the urge to pee to get emotional.

DuckWithOneWing · 29/09/2024 19:35

I started towards the back, and just before I got to the start the person on the announcements said that there was over a mile of runners as the first people had already got to the mile marker. For some reason that made me feel a bit emotional as I started!

I went to McDonald's a few hours after I finished and that made me feel so much better. I didn't really feel hungry but food definitely helped.

I'm now sitting on the sofa wearing my medal, drinking wine and thinking about when I'm going to do my next one.

Whiskeyandkittens · 29/09/2024 23:27

DH went out and got us kebabs ( with extra chicken on mine as I needed the protein to recover!)
I have added my medal to the last 3 on our fireplace cat. My first was in 2011 back when it was still a flat course!

Happierwithouthim · 30/09/2024 19:34

I've just done 5k & finding it hard to believe that two weeks ago I did 4 times that in one go.

Great running everyone

Whiskeyandkittens · 01/10/2024 21:01

I can still hardly walk and I'm having to go down the stairs one at a time and sideways!

DuckWithOneWing · 02/10/2024 09:04

My legs are fine! My hip really hurts though.

Fishingforworkideas · 02/10/2024 10:24

My legs are very bad! I'm travelling for work this week and whenever I stand up after long periods of sitting down (on trains/planes) I can barely walk!

I did run faster than I usually do but it seems extreme. I wonder if getting a sports massage a few days before was a bad idea. I did get leg pain while running too which I never usually do.

Happierwithouthim · 02/10/2024 11:04

I felt it in my legs up to Thurs.

Half marathon done. 2.08. I had hoped for a wee bit faster but just chuffed I survived. I'm still pretty surprised that my legs are capable of that distance. Grin
