Training for a half marathon-anyone else?

This weekend I'll be running 10k/6 miles. Plan is to increase by 1 mile a week.

It has been years since I ran a half marathon.

Approx ten miles done this eve, my watch is dead & I can't find charger used map my run app but had it paused at one stage & thought I'd restarted it but I hadn't. I'm going to drive my route tomorrow.

I felt good and feel like I can handle the half in two weeks

@Whiskeyandkittens glad we've reinspired you, why do you want to cover the distance beforehand? I did on my first half years ago.

@Happierwithouthim just to reassure myself that I can more than anything, I was doing it fairly regularly until recently, and finding up to 10 miles fairly easy.

Planning to take it nice and slow!

weareallqueens · 01/09/2024 08:06

Well done on the 10 miles @Happierwithouthim - getting into double figures is my goal for tomorrow. I'm considering taking jelly babies - anyone else doing refuelling? I generally run on a pretty empty stomach but have been advised something sugary is good.

DuckWithOneWing · 01/09/2024 11:30

I'm doing a half marathon "in September" and so far it's seemed ages away. Unfortunately though it now is September and so it is very soon. How did that happen?!

Maxapple · 01/09/2024 16:07

I’m doing the royal parks half marathon on 13th October (6 weeks to go). Longest run so far has been 14km. Planned to try 16km today (10 miles) but left home too late and got caught out by the heat so stopped at 13.

hoping to do 10 miles next week or the one after to feel more confident I can complete the 13 on the day.

feel like I’m running very slowly at the moment - don’t suppose that matters that much.

Totally how did that happen!
I took an electrolyte tablet before going and drank a can of monster zero, I dropped 250ml bottles of water along the way then drank 2.5 of them, the heat was going out of the day so I didn't need so much.

When I was training in 2017, soreen cakes were very popular

This was the first run I didn't struggle mentally or physicall, that feeling came much sooner last time but I was training with others then and on my own this time

Hi all! Would love to join this thread, im in this exact situation, I can't believe we're in September! I have done up to 14km, I'm hoping to do a 16km run before the race and then will have to improvise the final 5k!

I do worry I've upped the training too quickly as I'm getting little niggle pains here and there now. After the 14k run I also felt like it's been hit by a bus. Aching all over, sweets at night, stomach cramps for 24 hours. Is this normal??

Happierwithouthim · 02/09/2024 10:57

@Fishingforworkideas when's your HM?

I'm telling myself I've to do 4 x 5ks & then it's just the home straight

Maybe those feelings were unrelated to running a 24hr bug perhaps?

11 miles this morning baby! Feeling quite chuffed. Hope everyone else's training is going well.

Happierwithouthim · 02/09/2024 14:31

Excellent how did it go?

OP posts:
weareallqueens · 02/09/2024 15:50

Pretty well. The first mile was very wet but it dried up and it's actually nice now it's not so warm! I managed 11 miles in 1hr 40 so on track for the half.

Last weekend of September. Unfortunately I feel like this after every run pretty much, I'm probably pushing myself too much too quickly but I'm running out of time 🙈

Happierwithouthim · 02/09/2024 17:46

@weareallqueens that's great going, I'm a fair weather runner

@Fishingforworkideas just the long ones or all runs?

OP posts:
Forestcantrun · 02/09/2024 22:47

@Fishingforworkideas what was your fueling and your general schedule like before that run? Or were you feeling off/Covidy ?
if it’s a one off then it might be a fluke, secondary to fueling or hydration. Sometimes I feel absolutely horrendous after a long run the week before a period but never any sweats. Just intense nausea and pain.
If it’s a regular thing you need to see your GP sooner rather than later for an MOT and some bloods.

Forestcantrun · 02/09/2024 22:50

Also, cannot believe it finally is September!! We are officially in half marathon month ( for most of us)

Happierwithouthim · 03/09/2024 14:13

This is training plan for next two weeks for Charleville.
I don't do as much as them so my plan is 4 mile walk Wed, 5k Thurs eve & 10 miles on Saturday

@Fishingforworkideas have you tried slowing down a bit to see if it feels more comfortable?

26 days til race day for me (aaargh!), and I just successfully did my practice run in 2 hours 16 minutes, such a relief! I did a dry run on the nutrition too - more carbs than normal yesterday, electrolyte tablet and a banana before I set off - plus an energy gel half way through mile 10, never tried those before but pretty sure it gave me a good boost for the last couple of miles and I managed to pick up the pace a bit. Might try and do a practice run of the actual hill on the race route than nearly killed my last year at some point too!

Happierwithouthim · 03/09/2024 20:31

Hills are my nemesis Grin

Good thing Charleville is flat as a pancake🤣🤣

@Whiskeyandkittens thats a great time for a practice run. Am sure its really boosted the confidence.

Happierwithouthim · 03/09/2024 22:27

Got my number and half zip top today.
The flattest straightest and fastest half marathon in Ireland Smile

The other one I've attempted twice has eleven ish miles of hills!

OP posts:
Whiskeyandkittens · 03/09/2024 23:14

My race has lots of hills in, the bastards changed the course since the first time I did it a few years ago and I was completely taken by surprise last year when I was expecting a nice flat course 😅 Hills are my nemesis too!

Luckily (well, unluckily normally!) it's quite hilly where I live so I had at least a bit of practice. And all the hills in the race are in the first half if I remember correctly. Hoping I'm more ready for them this time!

DuckWithOneWing · 04/09/2024 21:32

My race has a lot of hills too 🙁

My training isn't going as well as I want it to. But I've convinced myself that's a good thing, as I'm only doing this to raise money for vulture conservation as I'm not a runner and if I was actually good nobody would want to donate. I'm sure it makes sense somehow.

I did 5km today. I have electrolytes after my run but haven't tried them before. I think I might try that next time as anything that helps is definitely a good idea!

Happierwithouthim · 05/09/2024 22:04

Where I used to live had a hill in every run now where I live and where my boyfriend lives are fairly flat so I don't get much hill training in at all

Forestcantrun · 06/09/2024 23:24

I’ve had a family emergency so I’m not sure I’ll even get to run. All depends on the next 5 or 6 days. I’ve only missed one day of training though so I’m on track if I can run. No pun intended🤣
