Training for a half marathon-anyone else?

This weekend I'll be running 10k/6 miles. Plan is to increase by 1 mile a week.

It has been years since I ran a half marathon.

Just the half or will it affect the full as well?

@Happierwithouthim hopefully just the half. They are so much better today thankfully so I’m running to the hospital, to work, to the shops just to keep training and getting everything done, am just exhausted now.

Good luck to any Great North Runners for tomorrow.

Did 18km today on a pretty flat route, took 2 hours 19.

I feel like all I've done is eat today though, had a big bowl of porridge and a coffee before, 3 gels, 1 energy drink, 1 recovery drink. Then I picked at food during a party including a cupcake and a muffin and since I've been home had cake, Doritos, dip, cheese and a cheeseburger. I feel like such a blob!

I've been put down for 20km next week with some tempo sections. 5 weeks tomorrow until the half and I'm feeling a bit better about it. After today I know I could run a flat half, this one will be tough with the hills and the terrain but if I can just stick to walking up the steep hill only then I will feel like I've achieved my target.

Fishingforworkideas · 08/09/2024 10:56

I managed 16k in 1h33 this morning, I'm so pleased! It felt a lot easier than the 14k two weeks ago as well for some reason.

The half is starting to feel manageable, I'm just worried about nutrition. I didn't eat before the 16k this morning and felt fine but I'm not sure it's a good idea to do a half marathon running on empty?

I just tend to have bowel issues after a long run and it feels safer not to eat anything. Really not sure what to do on the day.

Happierwithouthim · 08/09/2024 13:24

I did 9 miles/14.5km mostly running in 1hr 47.5 mins, this pace is not enough for Charleville but I didn't feel well yesterday so my food yesterday was poor and hydration levels were low.
I'm going to focus on getting good food sleep & water all week this week.

My half isn't starting until 10am, I'll be leaving my own house at 8am. My plan is something like scrambled egg & toast at 7:30 & a banana & can of monster zero then before arrival at race. Nothing too heavy so that I can have my toilet done before setting off.

Did you start to wane before 16k? If not maybe you could do it fasted if it starts early in the day

That's great, everyone's doing well with the distances!

I saw some training plans advise to run the full distance before the day but I'm not planning to do that, I think 10 miles is the most I'll do, I figure I can always scramble through another 5k even if I need to massively reduce my speed.

You make a good point about start time. I wasn't waning by the end of today's run but it was only 9.30am when I finished. My race doesn't start til 10 so fasting til at least 12 o'clock will probably be way too much.

I think next weekend, I'll eat then run and see how it feels and trial how much my stomach can take.

Happierwithouthim · 08/09/2024 19:54

I've only covered 9 miles, it's 7 years since I last did a half but when I was tiring today I saw a sign saying the village was 5km away & that wasn't even end of my run and I was like I can do that & it refreshed me so to me the half is 4 x 5k plus a bit we've got this!

weareallqueens · 09/09/2024 18:33

I did 9 and a bit miles today after not eating and it wasn't quite as good as last week so going back to having a couple of slices of toast before I go out I think. It's 3 Mondays till the race so I'll do another long one next week then keep them about 5/6 miles till the big day.

DuckWithOneWing · 09/09/2024 22:16

I just got back from an 11km run. It's my longest so far. I think I could've gone further but it got dark so I was worried I'd trip as the pavements are very uneven here.

I'm still really slow. I'm not convinced I'm going to make my goal of less than 3 hours.

Forestcantrun · 10/09/2024 00:32

@Happierwithouthim havr you got your bib? I haven’t received any thing and now am wondering do I just collect it race day.

Happierwithouthim · 10/09/2024 06:39

I did, I got it last week.
Did you sign up for it to be posted out or collection?

Forestcantrun · 10/09/2024 07:01

I cannot remember 🤣 I seem to have paid a postage fee but I am not sure now is that just a fee

Happierwithouthim · 10/09/2024 20:57

That's my information - I didn't however get a race top only the one I paid for. Maybe that's on the day.

Went to an athletics club training, running 400m then recovery for 60 sec x 10 rounds. It was tough going but I'm glad I went.

@Happierwithouthim thats a solid workout!

one of our bibs arrived. Mine hasn’t but the website says if it hasn’t arrived there’s not much they can do about it now, just collect another on the day. Still not sure I can even go but I’m still training away. Strides tonight, easy run tomor and then a speed session Thurs

Happierwithouthim · 11/09/2024 09:43

The pace was so much faster than I'm used to but that's good to push yourself.

I might look for a top on the day so seeing as mine didn't come.

OP posts:
Happierwithouthim · 11/09/2024 09:45

Hopefully you'll get to but sure training will help for DCM anyway

Happierwithouthim · 12/09/2024 20:44

Last run done what will be will be. That was about 1.5 miles of hills & I'll still be done in the 2.5 hours at that pace.

All the best for Sunday @Happierwithouthim and enjoy tomorrows carb load!
I unfortunately had to defer my place but I’ll be out for my long run over the weekend as usual instead.

Happierwithouthim · 14/09/2024 08:56

Trying to decide what to eat today

Pity but at least you could defer

20km done today and I still have 4 weeks to go. The last 2 were very tough, I managed to pick the pace up when I knew the end was in sight with about 0.5km to go but I'm feeling pretty dead now.

Took me 2.30 so factoring in the hill walking for the half and the others getting me through I should be done within the 3 hour cut off.

NoKnit · 14/09/2024 18:31

Great thread only just seen it. Half marathon is definitely my favourite race distance to run I can't remember how many I've done 😅

Good Luck to the OP for tomorrow's race. I'm doing a half tomorrow as well in training for marathon end of October.

Enjoy the day everyone racing tomorrow think the weather is on our side 😀

Happierwithouthim · 14/09/2024 18:46

Thanks noknit will see how tomorrow goes first but there's a local one in six weeks would it be alright to do that too? What training would I need over next six weeks?

Picking you're sorted!
