Training for a half marathon-anyone else?

Happierwithouthim · 24/05/2024 21:17

This weekend I'll be running 10k/6 miles. Plan is to increase by 1 mile a week.

It has been years since I ran a half marathon.

Good luck tomorrow @Happierwithouthim - sure it'll go great!

Junior Parkrun is as much as I'm doing tomorrow.

Pickingmyselfup · 15/09/2024 07:40

Good luck to those running this weekend, have a blast and keep those legs moving!

Fishingforworkideas · 15/09/2024 10:51

Good luck everyone, hope it goes well!

Happierwithouthim · 14/09/2024 18:46

Thanks noknit will see how tomorrow goes first but there's a local one in six weeks would it be alright to do that too? What training would I need over next six weeks?

Picking you're sorted!

I think in 6 weeks time it's fine to do another half just keep runs up to 3-4 runs a week with one longer one included in that.

I'm probably going to do another next weekend.

I hope it all well and everyone running today had a good race I'm pleased with my time although was hoping for a few minutes faster

Happierwithouthim · 15/09/2024 17:06

Started out two fast with a PB for both 5k & 10k, hit a mental block at 9 miles because that was longest I'd covered in training but I did it Grin

Ah that's great good job.

Yes starting out too fast is a massively common mistake I've done it myself. But you do learn from it. If you got best times over 5km and 10km then that was definitely too fast. Always start defensive and ignore the others overtaking. But it's something you learn over time.

That's brilliant well done!!

Forestcantrun · 15/09/2024 21:03

Brilliant, well done. Was sad not to get there but I look forward to it next year

Happierwithouthim · 15/09/2024 21:23

I was always conscious of keeping to my usual pace in other runs I've done but I think I got a confidence boost on Tues at athletics clubs training when my pace was 3.5 mins faster per mile than usual and I didn't die Grin

I'm back in the running game most importantly

Well done @Happierwithouthim!

My race is in 2 weeks and feels far too soon

Happierwithouthim · 20/09/2024 10:40

How's training going?
I went with running club last night 3.76 miles. I went with the fast crew for a Thurs & I slowed down then after that.

That was my first post half run.
They're all so nice & congratulatory & we went for a dip in the sea too

My half is next Sunday! I don't feel prepared at all. Well, I've decided what I'm wearing so I might be slightly prepared. I really hope the weather is better.

Fishingforworkideas · 23/09/2024 08:26

@DuckWithOneWing me too! I go between feeling like this is as ready as I'll ever be and feeling like I can't do it at all!

My run yesterday didn't go great (just a 10k and I struggled) so the panic is setting in!

I'm sure we'll be fine on the day though!

DuckWithOneWing · 23/09/2024 19:31

I went for a dress rehearsal today - I'm not sure if normal people do this, but I got dressed in everything I'll be wearing on the day, including my race number, and did a 5k. I wanted to do 10k but I wasn't sure if my knee was hurting. I had a problem with my IT band a couple of months ago which caused knee pain and I really don't want to aggravate anything this close to my run.

@Fishingforworkideas we can definitely both do this!

Happierwithouthim · 23/09/2024 20:17

Of course ye can do it - nerves are normal

Whiskeyandkittens · 25/09/2024 11:39

Just done my last run before race day on Sunday, was a dress rehearsal apart from the race number! It was helpful as I now know I need to remember to put some vaseline on my arms to stop my sports bra running!

Now to rest my legs and eat lots of carbs!

Fishingforworkideas · 25/09/2024 13:00

@whiskeyandkittens enjoy the rest before D Day!

I've just had a sports massage, I can't believe how tight everything was, hopefully it will help for Sunday.

I think I may do a slow 5k jog on Thursday. I typically wouldn't but I struggled with a run last week after a 5-day break so I think maybe I just need to keep my legs moving.

Went shopping this morning too to make sure I eat proper food rather than snack all day long on zero-nutrition foods like I usually do.

Happierwithouthim · 28/09/2024 20:20

Best of luck to you all in tomorrows runs!

Whiskeyandkittens · 29/09/2024 05:42

Morning, I'm up early and full of race day nerves, was having dreams all night of being late and not making it to the start line in time or getting there having forgotten something - hope the adrenaline makes me run faster! 😅

Best of luck to everyone running today!

DuckWithOneWing · 29/09/2024 07:39

I'm on my way! The race starts at 10 and is 45 minutes away, so we've allowed 2.5 hours for the journey. Hopefully I'm not late! I've also definitely over packed as I think I have everything possible. Even a fridge.

Hope your run goes great @Whiskeyandkittens

Pickingmyselfup · 29/09/2024 07:52

Good luck!

DuckWithOneWing · 29/09/2024 08:49

We got here so early there was still toilet roll left in the portaloos!

Happierwithouthim · 29/09/2024 12:26

I'm guessing ye are in by now, hopefully not running in the wet?

OP posts:
Fishingforworkideas · 29/09/2024 12:38

All done! Finished in 1h59 which I am really pleased about! I don't think I've ever struggled this much in a race (so.. many... hills...) so I'm even more pleased I didn't give up (considered it a couple of times!!).

My legs are super painful now and I'm really cold, don't think my body has any energy left to keep me warm!

I hope today went well for everyone else running!

Forestcantrun · 29/09/2024 14:07

Amazing stuff @Fishingforworkideas , well done.

am on the taper now for my marathon so just glad to finally see some shorter runs
