Would anyone like to start C25K in the New Year that needs some time to get your head together?

Houseplanter · 10/12/2023 17:44

I've done this before and am planning on restarting in January. I've gained some weight and lost some fitness but realistically now is not the time to start.

However I'm not one for last minute things and my head needs to get itself in the right place (and plan a diet). So with this in mind over Christmas and New Year I'm starting in January.

Anyone care to join me?

W2 R1 done!

So cold, started snowing while I was out. Have never run in 2 pairs of leggings, gloves, a polo necked jumper, hoodie, snood and hat before! I felt like Rocky with the hats on

newbeliever · 08/01/2024 16:41

Well done everyone, seriously impressed by those going out in the snow flurries! @Houseplanter I’m really impressed by the run/soup coordination!!

I didn’t find it too cold this morning but I am wearing a long sleeve thermal running top plus fleece, warm headband and gloves. By the fourth run I’m taking my gloves off and by the end unzipping fleece and thermal top as feel so hot! Might have to visit Decathlon for some cheap extra thermal layers if the cold snap continues.

I went, had a great run and back home for a shower and baked potato.
Anyone any idea how to avoid the minor stitch I get behind my rib cage?

newbeliever · 08/01/2024 20:00

@Freda999 Idrinking some water before heading out plus concentrate on your breathing. The next time you go out run a little slower.

What does everyone listen to when running? I’ve been doing an audio book but am thinking music might be a bit more buzzy

Music at the moment, usually Coldplay, as keep meaning to put together a more motivating playlist but haven’t got around to it!

Houseplanter · 09/01/2024 08:23

I listen to the radio.. usually Radio2 via the BBC Sounds app. I like the mix of someone chatting and then music.

Sounds of the 80s or 90s is good, or a bit of Tony Blackburn

(Yes, I'm old 👵🏼)

I listen to upbeat music as it does spur me on although if I'm going to have to run at night, I won't listen to anything other than my own wheezing!

minipie · 09/01/2024 09:21

I definitely need music, it’s 50% of what gets me running ! I have spotify and it makes me a suggested running playlist, based on songs I’ve put into “Liked songs”. It also has loads of other pre made running playlists.

Oh hadn’t thought of the radio, might try that! I’m hoping it will distract me and I’ll be so caught up in the music/chat, I’ll forget I’m running! 😂

Houseplanter · 09/01/2024 15:15

@newbeliever that's why I've settled on the radio.. I get caught up in the chat and I like not having to choose my music. Whenever I've made a playlist I find I want to skip tracks and get cross with it for paying the wrong music (even though I've chosen it 🙄).

Warmer when you’re running! I haven’t solved the cold fingers though… hate running in gloves, but my hands are so cold till half way through the run.

@minipie have you tried fingerless mitteny things/maybe called wrist warmers? I curl my fingers up inside them to begin with then when I get hotter during the run, roll them right back so they are just like bands around my wrist, not on my hands at all. They're a brilliant compromise! I don't use 'sport' ones, just regular woollen ones.

minipie · 11/01/2024 10:34

I haven’t tried those but I do have thumbholes on my running top and fleece so get a similar effect… still freezing fingers though! I totally failed to run yesterday 😳 so will try to go later today…

newbeliever · 11/01/2024 17:01

I didn’t do a proper run yesterday either, first time I’ve missed it. Ended up working late, I knew I wouldn’t be home until just before 8pm so instead I tried to do it during my walk home in my work clothes carrying my bags! I was wearing trainers but you can probably get it didn’t go well! My route home is mostly uphill so I didn’t finish the final 3min run if W3R1. I need to repeat it, I’m in two minds about doing it tonight or tomorrow morning 🥶

On a more positive note, diet is going well, I’m sticking to it and losing weight. Already down to 77.8 from 79.5 at New Year. I do tend to lose a few pounds to start with and then settle down to a pound and a half a week.

newbeliever · 13/01/2024 09:27

Morning everyone. How are we all doing? I don’t feel like I’ve had the best week as I only managed to properly run once before work, my other attempt running back from work wasn’t a good idea! Forced myself out this morning to do W3R1 again, finished it ok but I think I took it too slow this time as I was worried about finishing the second 3 min run. Anyway, good to get it done and I'm thinking I’ll do my next run late tomorrow afternoon so I get two runs in over the weekend when I have more time.

@Houseplanter i listened to the radio this morning, much better, I enjoyed it and it was distracting.

minipie · 13/01/2024 09:39

Well I failed to run Weds or Thurs but managed yesterday- I did the dreaded w5 r3 (20 minutes running no breaks) and managed it! It seems to really vary from day to day how hard I find a run.

newbeliever work clothes, bags and uphill that sounds impossible! Not surprised you couldn’t finish but well done for repeating. And on the diet - I am eating a LOT at the moment and definitely not losing weight 😬

kirinm · 13/01/2024 11:13

I didn't run this week so did W2R3 and W3R1 today. Managed it and managed the cold although it's meant to be Baltic on Monday.

Well done! The 20 min run really freaks me out and puts me off.

May I join? W4 day 2 tomorrow!

Well done all on the thread 👍👏

newbeliever · 13/01/2024 17:46

Well done @minipie ! That’s such a big milestone! I can remember feeling slightly incredulous that I’d managed it the first time I did that run, it seemed such a jump! You can really call yourself a runner now 😊

@kirinm we are on target to do it at roughly the same time! I don’t feel anywhere near ready to run for 20mins, it’s only a couple of weeks away!

Of course, welcome to the thread, there are a few others on Week 4 too 😊

FastingPhilly · 14/01/2024 00:33

W2R3 run completed on Friday!

Running in 3 layers it is so cold. W3R1 on Monday

Tinkerbellflowers · 14/01/2024 13:21

Please can I join your thread? I started running this morning after planning to start in the new year. I havent done it since school and I'm in my late 40s. I did better than I expected and feeling quite pleased with myself. I need to get some proper running leggings as mine were falling down! 🤭

minipie · 14/01/2024 14:22

Welcome Tinkerbell! Well done! New leggings sound like a good motivator 😄
