Thanks for starting a new thread @redcandlelight !

ThereAreNoMore · 12/03/2021 09:35

Thanks red!

Thanks for the reply Cavagirl! Forgive a stupid question but do you mean stretches before running? I haven’t been doing that, just the warm up walk. I’ve got a foam roller on the way, my calf is so tight this morning I’m hoping it arrives today!

Doggley · 12/03/2021 09:55

Please can I join in? Starting week 5 tomorrow. Dreading it.

randomsabreuse · 12/03/2021 10:44

Stretches before running is basically dynamic stretches like high knees, gate openers, some lunges and kicks. I find calf raises useful too. Or the yoga with Adriene pre run workout (7 minutes). Static stretches aren't great before exercise.

I'm at the beginning of my next programme. Decided on half marathon with a theoretical "race" in mid June purely because I need boxes to tick and reminders on my phone. It's all very steady, short runs are 10 or 20 minutes with a target pace of no faster than 11.45 minutes/mile.

There will be some longer and faster runs but I needed a cut back week and I still need to get more pace options - the superfit types who were first finishers at parkrun could all run steadily and pace a consistent 35 minute 5k (and pretty well any increment down from that) while looking comfortable but I still have basically got "sprint" "run but not sprinting" "run" and "steady" and in the gaps between them I can't get comfortable at all. I've got better with flexibility work but it's still very much work in progress.

Thanks for the new thread. Psyching up for W8r3

BobVance · 12/03/2021 14:19

Welcome @Doggley I’ve just finished W4, starting W5 on Sunday or Monday. It’s a big step up isn’t it but we can do it!

Cavagirl · 12/03/2021 14:41

@ThereAreNoMore

Thanks red!

I do a mix of dynamic and some gentle static calf stretches before - officially you shouldn't do static and only do dynamic ones but I really notice the tightness if I don't. Definitely start with some dynamic stretches if you aren't already. Statistically you're more likely to injure yourself stretching a cold muscle. I've tried stretching before, stretching after, both, and not at all - and the clear outcome for me was the more stretches the better! I do have the flexibility of a stone statue so it may be just me Smile Either way foam rolling after is a winner however flexible you are!
WhereAreWeNow · 12/03/2021 15:41

Thanks @redcandlelight

tizwozliz · 12/03/2021 16:33

My hip isn't happy after I tried increasing my running to every other day rather than every 3rd day. No pain on running, but aches when I'm sitting down! (Not 100% sure it's my hip, could be my lower back...)

Onedropbeat · 12/03/2021 19:35

I’m hoping to recommence week 6 tomorrow
My knee is feeling loads better

Will take it easy

I’ve been a lot more irritable than usual on this week off

emilyjeff · 12/03/2021 19:49

Evening all and welcome newbies!
Didn't run today- walked my friends pony for 2 miles tho and she was a bit full of beans so ended up running some of the way! No pain in my leg so intending to run tomorrow. My planned session is interval running but think maybe I need to do it on a dirt/ grass track to save my legs as I seem to strike the ground very hard when I run fast.

fellrunner85 · 12/03/2021 22:32

Hello everyone! waves madly

A short one for me today as the massive hailstones weren't much fun. Well done to all of you who braved the elements today!

ThereAreNoMore · 13/03/2021 08:17

Thanks Cavagirl and randomsabreuse that sounds like it would be very helpful for me to do.

My foam roller arrived yesterday and wow, it did really feel a bit like torture on the tight calf but it helped!

redcandlelight · 13/03/2021 08:24

I was able to get a personal shopper session at a sports store.
I hope 20 min will be enough to try on the shoes I looked up on the net for my high arch and overpronation.
I've been ok with decathlon kiprun neutral shoes so far but need 2 days at least between runs or I get shin pain.

First run since 8 days ago

A steady week 6 run 1

It’s so windy out

Noticed every man out running made conscious efforts to cross the road

longlivetheking · 13/03/2021 09:33

That’s interesting @Onedropbeat.
I was going to go early W4R1 but DD woke me up at 2.30 and 4.30 so I snoozed my 6.30 alarm. Will either go later or tomorrow morning. I do prefer going early

schoolcook · 13/03/2021 09:52

Morning all thanks for the new thread.
I missed my run this morning as I was lugging furniture yesterday and have more of the same today.
Will pick it up tomorrow.
Apparently I have to do a magic half mile as I'm attempting half marathon training. It might fall flat when I get to the hill training as I haven't got any Grin

fellrunner85 · 13/03/2021 10:41

What's a magic half mile, @schoolcook? I could do with some magic in my runs!

schoolcook · 13/03/2021 11:18

@fellrunner85 it's part of the Jeff Galloway half marathon training. I have to run half a mile in the middle of a run that's a bit faster than I can usually manage.
Sounds painful if you ask me Grin

WellJuhnelle · 13/03/2021 14:25

Hi everybody! Thank you for setting up a new thread @redcandlelight.

I’ve been MIA for a while - was absolutely exhausted last week and then the weather has been awful so hasn’t been out for a week and a half! Wasn’t convinced I would cope with W5R1 this morning but it was one of the easiest runs yet. Been doing 10,000 step walking workouts at home so I think that has helped keep the momentum!

How did you get on @Doggley?

BobVance · 13/03/2021 15:28

Hi @WellJuhnelle can I ask about these 10,000 step walking workouts? Tell me more - I’m intrigued!

wlv12 · 13/03/2021 15:38

Hi,

I’m a newbie to running and did W2R3 today. Really had to push myself, especially going uphill.
Scared for week 3 on Monday!

WellJuhnelle · 13/03/2021 16:59

@BobVance I’ve been using a guy called Rick Bhullar - his YouTube channel is called ‘Get Fit With Rick’. He has a range of videos with different amounts of steps - the 10,000 step one is about 1hr15 and it goes fairly quickly. It is a bit dance like but you can put as much or as little effort in as you want.

There is another lady who is supposed to be quite good called Lesley Sansome who also does walking workouts but I haven’t tried one of hers yet!

Talksunderwater · 13/03/2021 17:30

Hello all and thanks for the new thread @redcandlelight. Welcome to all the newbies Smile

I had a break from running for a week or so with life getting in the way and then it has taken me a week to get back to where I was. I’m running 3x 4.5-5km per week and I average around 7mins per km for the first 3km (downhill and flat) then I have to run uphill (funny how that works Wink) so the last 2km I average around 7min20 per km. My current goal is to run the whole 5km in 35min. Then I’m not sure whether I’ll aim for further or speed.
