talks
I had a really tough run recently. it felt awful. I almost had to stop.
afterwards the runnjng app told me that it was my fastest run so far! no wonder it felt like hard work.

perception is a funny thing.

Well done @wizzler!! Grin amazing achievement.

@Talksunderwater this is the thing with running isn’t it - some days it feels like you’re walking through treacle and the next like you’re jumping on a cloud. I don’t know why but it’s definitely normal!

BIWI · 20/03/2021 12:24

Congrats @wizzler!

KarmaViolet · 20/03/2021 12:33

Can I join? I'm on week 6 and managing the runs but v e r y s l o w l y....

wizzler · 20/03/2021 12:39

Welcome @KarmaViolet

emilyjeff · 20/03/2021 12:52

Well done wizzler! 😁
I did 5k again this morning, time seems to be improving slowly. Had 2 stiles to cross
on my route though and lots of walkers to avoid!
If anyone else is interested I've signed up for the MS 50k in May challenge, its free although you are supposed to get donations. Based on my current mileage I think I should easily do 50k in a month but hoping it'll help to keep me motivated!

redcandlelight · 20/03/2021 13:58

karma slow is good!
once you can run for longer you can try speesing up a bit.

OP posts:
randomsabreuse · 20/03/2021 14:17

@KarmaViolet

Slow is definitely good. Once you find a place you like that you can keep going at and you enjoy then go for it.

I have 2 reasons I want to get quicker

  1. Go further and see more in a "reasonable" time away from my family.
  1. Because I need a tick box target to get out of the door regularly and going on a long and hilly run hurts too much if I don't do the basics. I like looking at hills while on hills, I would very much like not to hate running on them!
Poppercot · 20/03/2021 16:09

Can I join please? Just done my very first day of C25K. I’ve tried it before and gave up after 3 weeks. Determined to finish this time as I’ve entered a 10k run this winter. So I definitely need to stick with it!
First run felt not as bad as I remember although my heart rate apparently went up to 194!! Is that bad? I think I need to pace myself a bit more.

redcandlelight · 20/03/2021 16:12

welcome popper
do you wear a smart watch? those are not really very acurate.
most important is how did you feel out of breath like that.

OP posts:
Poppercot · 20/03/2021 16:39

Yes it’s what my watch showed my heart rate as being during one part of the run. I mean, yes I was out of breath, but I’d expect to be as I’m not a runner. I certainly didn’t feel like I was at my maximum. But that’s more than what my max heart rate should be.
If they’re renowned for being inaccurate I’ll just go with how out of breath I feel.

MammaGnomes · 20/03/2021 17:46

Hi everyone! Newbie here
Completed week 2 yesterday and feeling a little nervous about week 3 on Monday.

emilyjeff · 20/03/2021 17:51

@Poppercot when I first started running I had a basic fit bit and it would always buzz and tell me my heart rate was too high! I just ignored it. Theyre nort very accurate so just go off how you feel

redcandlelight · 20/03/2021 18:31

welcome gnomes
we've all been there, but with hindsight can say that week 3 will absolutely be ok!

wrt to being out of breath: totally normal. to run you need to breath faster.
as an asthmatic when I first started running some 25 years ago I was full of panik about being breathless. it's how you recover from being out of breath that matters. c25k is brilliant for that as it improves fitness literally step by step.

Randommother · 20/03/2021 18:55

Hi, can I join please? I did week 3, run 3 this morning (run for me means slow, lumbering jog Grin). I started the course with my son (10) but he's stopped coming since he's been back at school, so I've been going out on my own, usually around 6.30 am ish. I love how few people there are around at that time (less people to see me attempting to run!) and I love how many birds there are now! What's everyone else's favourite time to run?

Onedropbeat · 20/03/2021 20:03

I wait until DH gets home and go after work

I’d love to have the energy for a run at 6:30am,
In fact it sounds blissful. I’ve never been a morning person.

I’m going to give it a go sometime this week! Would be lovely not having to wait until the end of the day each time

redcandlelight · 20/03/2021 20:06

I only ran in the mornings during the heatwave in the summer.
tbh I prefer to run afternoons/evenings.

OP posts:
BobVance · 20/03/2021 20:11

Welcome newbies! This is a really great thread Grin

When do I like to run? I usually run during my working week (WFH) whenever I can spare 40mins or so. I usually wait until early afternoon when I’m feeling a bit sluggish and it gives me such a good energy boost I end up having a really productive afternoon.

I don’t love running enough to get up early to do it but I am super impressed by those who do!

MammaGnomes · 20/03/2021 20:20

I run just before lunch time. I'm wfh at the moment and so is DP so we go together. He's a lot fitter than me though and I made the mistake of trying to keep to his pace at first! He also likes to talk.. me not so much, so I'll be glad when I can shake him off ha ha

longlivetheking · 20/03/2021 20:25

I try and go early - mainly because then I know it’s done Grin, it’s also better for me as I dread seeing anyone!

fellrunner85 · 20/03/2021 20:40

I run in the very early morning before anyone else is up, because that's the only time I have free - the rest of the day is a whirl of school runs, work, tea and kids bedtimes.

redcandlelight · 20/03/2021 20:45

if you run in the mornings or lunchbreak. how do you deal with the 'aftersweat'?
I seem to start sweating only about 20min into my runs but keep sweating for some time after.

OP posts:
Cavagirl · 20/03/2021 20:45

I'm a random middle of the day runner too BobVance
I'd love to have the self discipline to get up early for a run before work but I just can't!
I don't like running in the dark. Recently I've been too busy in the day & so going just after 5 and it's lovely how quickly the evenings get lighter... my cut off is about 20 mins before sunset before it gets too dark on the way back, so I've been really aware of it. And the clocks go back next weekend!! Grin

Cavagirl · 20/03/2021 20:46

Cross-post red
WFH is the solution!!! Sorry.

fellrunner85 · 20/03/2021 20:55

Never had that, @redcandlelight - I must be lucky! Quick shower and I'm fine.
