I like to go first thing too. The longer I leave it, the less likely I am to do it. I like how few people there are around first thing too. I'm an early riser and I tend to get very tired in the afternoon and evening so I guess I have more energy in the morning.
Also worry I'd get a stitch if I ran after eating so it makes sense to go before breakfast. I'm not sure if that's based on any scientific facts or just a random idea I've got into my head.

Talksunderwater · 20/03/2021 22:05

I agree with @WhereAreWeNow in that I like how there are not too many people early(ish) in the morning (lots around here during the day) and if I leave it until later, I won’t go. I like to have a leisurely breakfast and a shower before starting work (WFH at present). Sets me up for the day.

schoolcook · 21/03/2021 07:58

I'm an early or it doesn't happen runner.
I eat a date or two before I go depending on distance and I like the lack of people and traffic and not having to worry about my bladder Grin
I drink buckets of tea and once I start that there's never a safe time to run.
I'm also so sweaty I then shower before I start my working day.

I did 15K this morning. A bit of a jump ahead in the half training but my run walk run yesterday felt patchy and like I didn't achieve anything so I thought I'd push myself this morning.

Hello
I'm a couple of weeks into C25K having done no exercise (bar yoga) for years. I just wondered, if you struggle with a run do you repeat it until you can manage it, before moving on?

BIWI · 21/03/2021 09:46

Personally I've found that although I think the next run will be a struggle, usually it's fine - if not more of a plod than a run! I think so much of it is in your mind.

But that said, if when you're trying it, it's a struggle - then maybe repeat that run. It is amazing, though, how your body builds up its stamina!

redcandlelight · 21/03/2021 10:46

decade there is no shame repeating a run.

but I agree with biwi - give it a go. if you don't manage you can still repeat that run. but most likely you will be fine!

... and now I need to gird my loins to go for a run today Smile

The knees are much better after the rest, and also - interestingly - despite a 2 hour walk/ramble on Friday. So I'll give today a go and see what happens.

redcandlelight · 21/03/2021 10:55

I just returned from my weekend run. 7k and I took a couple of loops in the woods to get hills under my feet.
might feel it in my legs tomorrow.

I did a quick run after the kids on their bikes today and my calf isn't up for a full run yet but I surprised myself, I thought it would be more painful. I think I'm going to give it another week and maybe redo some of week 4 instead of going straight into run 5.

I like running in the dusk or dark, I did it in daylight the last couple of times and it just feels a bit wierd, though nice to see tree roots and stuff clearly.

KarmaViolet · 21/03/2021 13:32

Just back from the third run of week 6, 25 minutes running. I can't say it was fun exactly but I did do it. 4k total, including the warm up and down walks.

It is frustrating that I used to be fitter and faster, but I'm trying not to let that put me off!

EmilyDickinson · 21/03/2021 15:01

Well done to everyone on their runs this week. Once again work and other stuff got in the way so I’ve only done one run this week. It was week 8 day 1 for me and I had to do 28 minutes continuous running. I was a bit daunted by the thought of keeping going for that long but I did it at a steady pace and to my surprise it was okay and didn’t feel as hard as my previous 25 minute run. My C25K is only 8 weeks so I’m almost at the end of the programme, however I doubt that I’ll actually run 5k in the allotted time so will work on gradually increasing the length of my runs until I hit 5k. At the moment I’m running on my local Park Run course so I’ll know when I run the whole course that I’ve done 5k. Pre Covid I was doing weekly Park Runs so I want to return to that when they restart.

redcandlelight · 21/03/2021 15:07

I looked up my local parkrun, but I think I will give it a miss. it's quite early in the morning (8am) and it's a bike ride away. not sure how that would work with leaving my bottle and jacket somewhere...

anyway, they have not started them again, even though they would be technically allowed.

Thank you @BIWI and @redcandlelight I'll give wk 4 a go tonight

I've just taken delivery of some new fleecy leggings - I don't want to take them off

WhereAreWeNow · 21/03/2021 15:39

Well done everyone who's been out running this weekend.
I'm edging closer to 5k in 30 mins. I did it I. 31 mins this morning. I managed to do the 2nd km in under 6 mins but I then felt like I wasn't going to be able to carry on for the 3rd km (I did carry on but was very tempted to stop) so I probably need to pace myself a bit better. Felt good at the end of it though.

randomsabreuse · 21/03/2021 19:03

Nice one @WhereAreWeNow! Sounds like you're well on the way, but don't overthink the 30 minutes thing, I had a real

randomsabreuse · 21/03/2021 19:17

Oops posted too soon there. Had a real mental block on the sub 30 5k for ages. Main trick is not to try for it too often - probably not more than once a month as pushing too hard too often isn't helpful for getting faster.

Didn't take my own advice today. My plan has all my runs as "easy" pace at the moment, which I do find a little dull - I prefer at least one interval session because I get a buzz from that. Today was supposed to be 70 minutes (or 50 minutes) easy but it turned out the farmer was muck spreading just the other side of the canal and upwind Envy so I had to run faster to get away from the stink and as it was the last mile or so I kept going and did 10k in about 1 hr 08. Oops... My Garmin tells me this is unproductive (as was the bike ride with my 5 year old and the walk to the shop in search of dinner) but I disagree as I really needed to (a) escape the smell and (b) blow some cobwebs away after slogging through numerical and verbal reasoning assessments for a grad scheme yesterday!

WhereAreWeNow · 21/03/2021 19:21

@randomsabreuse that doesn't sound unproductive at all! Sounds like a really impressive distance and time. I can't imagine being able to run 10km. I'm knackered after 5km.
I love the idea of you running away from the wafts of manure Grin

redcandlelight · 21/03/2021 19:37

after completing I have 2 goals
1 - running 5k in less than 30 min
2 - running 10k (to beach & back)

OP posts:
randomsabreuse · 21/03/2021 19:51

Apparently it will take me 3 days to recover. Too much work for no gain in fitness according to its algorithm!

KarmaViolet · 21/03/2021 19:57

Even at my fittest I never managed a 30 minute 5k. I'm built for endurance not speed!

WhereAreWeNow · 21/03/2021 20:02

I don't think I'm built for either @KarmaViolet Blush I'm built for watching telly on the sofa.

emilyjeff · 21/03/2021 20:26

Evening ladies, seems its been busy on here! I walked 5k today- met up with a friend and our dogs. My legs are definitely recovering quicker between runs which is a good sign :)
I usually prefer a morning run, not really early though, like maybe 8am. Although lately I've just been going whenever, benefit of wfh and part time hours.
Can anyone give me advice on pace? I really only have two paces- standard or speedy! I see most training plans have easy/ tempo/ long run. How do I know what speed they are? I have tried running slower on my longer runs but it somehow makes it feel more difficult and then I end up going back to my standard pace.

Cavagirl · 21/03/2021 20:27
