Okay, it’s a start. A pretty rubbish start but I start nevertheless. Was really worried about every twinge in my heel and foot. Still it is the first run outside in ages!

Well done strandliv that’s a good start and you got out there.
Good luck on the marathon training TriSkiRun are you doing Edinburgh? I’ve done one marathon and that was plenty for me.
Another muddy run but the sun was out for a change.

IRun4Me no it’s not Edinburgh although that would be lovely, it’s a small one at the opposite end of the country. I’ve told only DH my plans incase injury forces me out then I’ll just switch to a local Triathlon which is also on in May.

emummy · 04/01/2020 17:27

Well done Strandliv first run of many!
Good luck with the marathon training TriRun. With a new job combined with a masters degree starting soon I am giving marathons a rest this year. I have signed up for a 10 mile race in March and an April half but am not confident about fitting in the training. Will see how it goes...

PaddingtonPaddington · 04/01/2020 18:49

Well done @Strandliv. Don’t put yourself down no run is rubbish a mile is the same distance whether it takes you less than 4 mins or more than 15 mins (quoting something I saw on FB).

@TriSkiRun99 I’m also planning on a Local May trail marathon as a training run for a 50K ultra in August. Might enter a 20 mile race at the end of March also. Need to actually write a plan and get organised.

@emummy sounds like you have your hands full but good goals to work towards.

Had a great run today. One of those powering along and seems easy. Will probably pay for it tomorrow.

Nice little run in the woods with dog. Finished on a yucky note; dog found some rotting fish to eat/roll in. We were about a mile from the river & up a steep hill so what it was doing there I don’t know but oh god the smell! She’s now had a shower and the car needs cleaned out.

Run with a friend who I haven’t run with for ages so that was lovely.
emummy My dog rolled in a dead fish yesterday. I think the heron had dropped it. Luckily dead fish isn’t as bad as dead seal which is his particular favourite - horrid boy.

Good luck with your training paddington I’m not off to a good start as my niggly left calf has seized up again this morning Sad but been out on bike ride with the kids today hoping it will loosen up. My DH is also doing a 30m Ultra Trail in the spring so he’s just “fitting” in 10m trail runs before work Grin if I did that I’d be asleep by lunchtime at my desk...He’s also 2stone lighter than me the bugger! He ran alongside our daughter on her bike today (9m) so had to keep quite a pace going and pushed her up a steep hill bless him.

Good luck with the job and the masters emummy. Hope you can keep the running going too.

PaddingtonPaddington · 05/01/2020 18:42

Morning progressive run to meet the family for breakfast. Only downside was being a bit sweaty in the cafe but massive plus that I didn’t need to run back Grin

@emummy and @IRun4Me dead fish must be appealing to dogs.

@TriSkiRun99 hope your calf recovers soon.

Gosh you’re all doing so well. Run 2 of the year for me today (day off work so I’ve booked a yoga class and I’m going for a run), I’m still not going to be in mile double figures for a while yet.

IRun4Me · 06/01/2020 09:08

Strandliv Well done on your second run. I don’t normally run this much but am doing RED January again this year. I managed to run every day last year so hoping to achieve again. I haven’t done a double figure run for ages but will have to soon as I have a half booked in for March. Eeekk
Hope the calf is better TriSkiRun And your husband sounds like a machine!
When do you start the new job emummy?

A lovely evening run for me last night, it was ideal conditions here and minimal traffic. Really enjoyed it. I'm aiming to get out to do the same loop tonight.

A run in the rain for me.

MuddledMiddlebrow · 06/01/2020 17:37

May I join you all here? I’m getting back to running properly- about 5 years ago I was doing 3 a week and completed two 5k and one 10k race. Got fat (thanks PCOS) and I’ve spent the last year losing 4.5 stone on keto. Did a bit of gym work in between but really missed running, and wanted to get back outside! I’m moving away from keto now to focus on good, balanced nutrition and I’ve made it my goal to run 500 miles this year to keep me active while I start my, very sedentary, phd. Just home from my first run of the year along the shoreline in the wind and rain.

Welcome Muddled! Good luck with your PhD. Fingers crossed the weather will start to improve & make for nicer runs

Strandliv · 07/01/2020 14:24

Hi muddled, I’ve just joined too and I’m also a PhD student (part time, while working) in my 4th year out of 5. I started exercising in the gym half way through my PhD mainly for my mental heath, I needed a way to switch off work, from my research, and even from home life. It did wonders. Feel so much better now I’ve added exercise. I am not an experienced runner (especially recently), but have decided to pick that up again also not only for mental health, but also for fresh air!

emummy · 07/01/2020 14:42

You’re both inspiring me - I’m about to start an MSc combined with 3 days work a week. Good luck to you both with your studies!

MuddledMiddlebrow · 07/01/2020 14:54

Thank you for such a warm welcome!! You’re so right about exercise helping with mental wellbeing- I’ve just finished an MRes and when I was getting stressed with how to phrase things or finding quotes I had lost (you should always write down the reference as you’re taking notes- not trust you’ll find it easily!!!!!!) I would head to the gym and invariably when I came back I’d be calmer and more able to complete the task.

Add to that the benefits of being outside in the fresh air and you can’t go wrong with running.

Strandliv · 07/01/2020 15:02

Good luck emummy and muddled. Sorry all, for the slight diversion, back to running chat. I’m going to do parkrun for the first time on Saturday. Gulp!

TriSkiRun99 · 07/01/2020 15:52

You give me hope as I’d like to finish a masters. I did a couple of modules to gain my professional membership then had my 2nd baby and never completed it as my career moved on without it. However as I’ve applied for a few promotions recently I’m wondering if lack of it has hindered me as all the youngsters are coming in with them as standard, despite me having years more experience. Yep running defiantly helps clear the mind and mull over work issues as does swimming. I need to do something tonight (swim or run), as my mind is going arrrhhh at work today.

Strandliv · 07/01/2020 16:20

Do it triski. I did my undergraduate and MSc pre DS. So much easier. I started my PhD when DS was 5. He started school and I started my PhD. :)
I do however think experience counts for a lot, more than letters after your name, so don’t put yourself down. If you’d like to finish your MSc, go for it, you can do it.

Right I’m off to yoga soon, run day for me is tomorrow.

PaddingtonPaddington · 07/01/2020 20:47

@MuddledMiddlebrow welcome and well done for setting a goal.

RED Jan continues with a club interval run last night and quick lunch run between meetings today.

Just an FYI we add all our running together as a total so have added in @Strandliv and @muddled totals plus my 2 runs

emummy · 07/01/2020 20:51

Steady run this evening, bit slower than I would have liked but not to worry. Spent the day touring the shops of Aberdeen buying work clothes & then walked the dog twice so my legs are a bit tired! Now need to do some volunteer sorting for parkrun next Saturday.

Hi @TriSkiRun99 - I'm doing Manchester marathon in April. Aim is to run a GFA time, with the aim of London next year. Though training isn't going brilliantly so far Blush

TriSkiRun99 · 07/01/2020 21:41

Good luck for Manchester Runningonempty84 I can do a HM but I’ve not gone any further and had a niggly calf do not been out since Sat. I’m rather daunted not just by running further but also finding the time do it! I’m unlikely to finish under 5hrs so I need 4hrs just for a longer training run. I’ve been trying to do more squats & lunges & planks since Xmas to build more strength, which I feel I’m lacking abit.
