November total 191.1. (I think)

Beautiful pics!

Amaura · 11/10/2020 16:38

Another 10 km, snuck in a couple of tempo miles so hopefully won’t pay the price

Slow muddy run but it was nice.

Bit damp this morning but the paths were quiet.

Went exploring this morning up a local hill, taking a new path. It's a 7 mile long hill so there's lots of it I haven't run yet. Didn't go all the way to the top as it was raining and misty, but had a good run along the flank. Lovely hot shower after!

I like finding new routes. Slight lack of them local to me.
Wet run this evening but enjoyable

Lovely pics emummy

Muddy and wet intervals last night and wet and slippery road intervals tonight. I like to mix it up a bit!

A head torch trail run tonight, not as muddy as it could have been, but lovely.

Hi all

I’d love to join in if that’s alright, just read through the full thread. You’re all very impressive and the photos look fab!

I wanted to ask, the ladies who are running lots of miles per week, how long did it take you to build up your distances? I am currently running 5 times a week.
Monday - 5k
Tuesday - 8k
Wednesday - rest
Thursday - 10k
Friday - rest
Saturday- 12k
Sunday - 10-12k

My aim is to run a half marathon distance (by Christmas hopefully). I am currently adding 1k on to my long run per week. I am fairly slow (6.30 min/km), I have only been running for about four months.

Everything I’ve read seems to suggest I should only do one long run a week and keep the others shorter but faster / intervals?

I would like to get quicker but also want to build up my distance without causing any injuries! Any advice would be most appreciated x

Amaura · 14/10/2020 22:09

Hi @Ellie2105

You’re wise to be cautious of injury, it’s easy to run for a few months, it’s hard to sustain it for longer.

At first glance you have four back to back running days so I’d see if you break it up a bit more. Weekly mileage looks good but I’d suggest keeping the total the same but maybe redistribute it, so instead of 12km/12km try 15km/9km until you get to to 21km/5km ish with the second day being slower and a leg loosener

(Note I’m not an expert)

Each month we have a shared total mileage so today I ran 4.5 miles which I’ll add onto the last total of 183.6

Welcome Ellie! Adding on a little each week to the long run is good, maybe every 3 or 4 weeks have an easier week with shorter distances to let your body recover too. It’s really good to have a mix of paces so you don’t do every run at the same speed and do your long run nice & slow. Very impressed at you going 5 days a week - I’ve never got above 4! If you can, a wee bit of strength training can be good too.
Easy run through the woods today, lots of roots, rocks and muddy bits to negotiate, great fun!

Welcome Ellie Totally agree with the others. From a personal point of view I find, once I’ve got a good running base - regularly running shorter distances - then I reduce my number of runs but put some longer ones in. So 1 shorter quicker or intervals (about 3 miles), a medium about 6 miles then a longer 9+. On a good week I may do another short one. It works for me but might not suit you. (Sorry I’m old and work in miles not km Grin) Good luck.
Nice run with a friend this morning

Hi everybody, thanks for the welcome and the advice, much appreciated! I managed 14km this morning but was fairly slow. I was tired and out of breath after the first couple of Km but kept going as I might not have chance to get a long one in this weekend.

Do you all live rurally? I would like to do a bit more off road but live in a town so not always possible.

When do you all find the best time of day to run? I tend to run first thing without having any breakfast, just water. I am experimenting with different meals the night before to see if there’s anything that seems to give me more energy in the morning!

Have a good day everyone 😀

emummy · 15/10/2020 16:29

I run in the morning but always have breakfast first. I think that running fasted is ok but I think you’re advised to have something to eat if you’re going to do a speed session, like intervals. My husband just has a banana and a drink before he runs.

PaddingtonPaddington · 15/10/2020 20:20

Welcome @Ellie2105 agree with others would do 4 runs a week rather than 5 and add in some interval sessions.

I live rurally so some roads are more like trails but also lots of lovely footpaths to chose from.

I’m no good running first thing without breakfast. Longer runs I take jelly beans with me and anything over a half distance tend to take my water bladder in a running back pack. Everyone has preferences so do what works for you.

Lovely trail and road run, started in the evening sun, then the heavens opened and it got dark really quickly and ended up the last 2 miles in the pitch black torrential rain!

Sometimes I’ll have a slice of toast and sweet tea (especially for parkrun days), others I’ll take a cliff bar (or if doing 12 miles or more then take a sandwich as well) to eat when I feel hungry. However I’m not a morning person and if I am getting up early for a social 10km then normally roll and go with something ready to eat straight away when I get in.

Another social 10km yesterday (theme of my life atm). Feeling like I could go further and faster but want to do a few weeks maintaining 30 miles and being good before pushing myself.

Good self- control there Amaura!
Lovely run this morning through woods, pushed on the hills as I feel I’ve been a bit lazy recently! Contemplating an ultra next year, not sure yet!

Hello all and welcome @Ellie2105

I'm new to the thread too and although I've been running for years I'm not really very good, or as dedicated as I should be. When I first started I used to run first thing in the morning on an empty stomach as well but when I started running further and faster I felt I needed something. Now I usually have toast or porridge (with peanut butter and jam)! Seems to do the trick. I avoid cereal and milk though as it tends to slosh around as I run!

I've been a bit lax this week (see comment above re. lack of dedication) as my girls are off school so we've been up and out most days. I've just done a wee 5k focusing on upping my pace.

Lovely sunny muddy trail run chatting with a friend this morning.

Another social 10km, this time I enjoyed a trail hill

@emummy it’s the next two weeks that will require discipline.

I prefer running in the morning but finding it harder to get out of bed the older I get. Definitely have to have breakfast and coffee first.
Nice run with DS. He was so busy wittering about some computer game he forgot to moan Grin

He sounds like my DS - can talk for hours about Xbox games! I find it harder to get up as well, find myself heading for bed at 9 some nights to get enough sleep!
Beautiful run in the sunshine today, a tough hilly route through the forest, gorgeous colours.
And apparently it’s World Menopause Awareness Day! So hears to all us slightly older ladies, still out there running through the hot flushes, insomnia, irritability, creaky joints etc and thank God for HRT!

Milestone day. Today’s run takes me to 2020 km this year

PaddingtonPaddington · 18/10/2020 18:32

Well done on the milestone Amaura

emummy realised I skipped over your earlier post that you are contemplating an ultra. I’m contemplating my second one saying I’d never do another when I finished!

Very wet boggy run along a river whilst killing some time waiting for DD. Definitely should have worn trail shoes as I slipped all over the place. Was very picturesque though so that made up for the wet feet.

Amaura · 19/10/2020 07:54

@emummy and @PaddingtonPaddington have you got particular ultras or distances in mind yet.

I’d love to do a 50 miler but not sure if would fit in nicely to next year, so probably best to wait
