Hi TheOnly! Good luck with the marathon training, main reason I don't want to do one is the amount of time it takes.
Have been getting emails about this year's illuminator & completely ignoring them. Never again!

KeyserSophie · 03/03/2016 05:52

Yeah, I'm going to drop down to the trail racing league next year (as opposed to the ultra league), mainly just due to time. Also, tbh, I like a nice 20k trail run once a week, but after that I'm ready for shower and sofa. When you're starting races thinking "Ugh, this is going to take aaaages" you know you're a bit over it, for now at least. Only 2 more 50ks and a 100k between me and ultra retirement.

Anyone else find they are more susceptible to colds? Yes- I think it's quite well documented that long endurance feats are bad for your immune system. If I get sick, it's always after I've really pushed hard in a 50k+ race. If I finish "broken" I know I'll have a cold within 3-5 days. That's why I generally slack off- ha ha.

Anyway, 9.3 from me this morning. Headed out with some friends to test my ankle on the trails. It held up pretty well but I decided not to push on to the intended 20k as could feel it starting to swell a bit

Keyser I have a bliming cold and did a long run for me on Sunday. I haven't been running as I want to do a half on Sunday and am hoping by being sensible I will be better but I am missing running. Sulks

suzannecaravaggio · 03/03/2016 08:33

I start to feel 'flu ey' if I do too much exercise, but the threshold for too much seems to depend on what other things are draining my batteries, am I getting enough sleep, how much general life stress I have.
I don't drink at all these days... I find it really drains the life force👼
I was never a big fan so its no real hardship

emummy · 03/03/2016 11:35

Beautiful sunny run in snowy woods today. Was expecting it to be tough as legs stiff from boot camp but it was actually ok. Slightly marred by dog getting attacked by another dog at the end, but luckily she's ok.

suzannecaravaggio · 03/03/2016 11:43

My runs are frequently marred by things that dogs do😬
Glad yours is OK emummy

Generally i like dogs but people seem to have more of them these days, one isn't enough it has to be a whole pack 🐩🐕🐩🐩🐕🐕🐩🐩🐕

Anglaise1 · 03/03/2016 12:43

Last Queen sorry about your marathon training turning you off running, you'll soon be tapering. Maybe you started a little early? My program was only 10 weeks so it wasn't too bad.
Welcome back Theonly I haven't had a cold/flu or anything else since I started running properly a couple of years ago, I was under the impression running had helped my immune system although it clearly isn't the same for everyone on here!
Keyser I've made the same mistake on mileage over quality and will be dropping down following the marathon and hopefully just running 4 times a week but targetted running. For racing it is important to do intervals as well as long runs and I need to start walking the dog instead of running with him.
emummy I hope your dog isn't too traumatised.
Halle get well soon!
6 miles from yesterday to add

cinnamongreyhound · 03/03/2016 13:17

Sorry to hear about your dog emummy glad she ok though, makes you jumpy for a bit afterwards too.

I am also a non drink suzannecaravaggio, don't know about the life force but I don't like how it feels and or how it changes people. My running buddy is often running hung over on a Sunday!

Hm is definitely my massive distance and to be fair I love junk miles. The comfortable trot along chatting with friends is lovely to me. I want PB's too which I know don't equate but I don't want the PB's that badly!

4 miles from me without my headtorch today Shock it was pouring when ds2 woke me at 5.15 it was pouring! Luckily it was light drizzle when I left and most of run was dry! 59.75

lastqueenofscotland · 03/03/2016 20:42

Anglaise I think Its bad habits more than anything, slipped into lettinfn myself plod

10.2 from today feeling much better, 5 at steady pace, 5 at fast pace (they took 38 mins which I think is ok having already run.. Ok jogged 5) then .2 just to get me to the shop cause I needed bread. Haha

CaptainWarbeck · 04/03/2016 03:33

Just one mile to add from me, I plodded out to check my knee was okay to run on, which it was! Went out for an early morning run here in Oz to beat the heat. Pic so you can all be envious of the sun, I remember chilly early spring runs all too well Grin

Went a bit earlier so started in the dark but finished in sunshine! Totally soaked as it poured last night! 74.95

KeyserSophie · 05/03/2016 06:41

5 miles from me. Just did an out and back on some technical trail to test how my ankle will hold up as there's no point being able to do 10k on tarmac if I can't do 50m on rocky ground. it was surprisingly good. I'm getting it taped for my race next weekend though.

Anglaise1 · 05/03/2016 07:23

21 from the last 2 days, PITA came back strongly during Thursday's intervals I hope it will go by the marathon next weekend. Haven't really tapered enough but will try and rest more next week. Am terrified that tapering will make my muscles disappear I seem to be blocked on that one.

Anglaise1 · 05/03/2016 07:26

Keyser good news about your ankle, I hope your race next weekend goes well.

emummy · 05/03/2016 08:48

Hill repeat session in lovely mix of rain and snow; did 15 so v proud of myself. Got home to find ds' swimming lessons cancelled, so didn't need to get up at 6 to fit in my run, sigh. Never mind!
Anglaise with all the running and training you have done, I think it would take months and months for your muscles to disappear!

suzannecaravaggio · 05/03/2016 10:51

You could do some googling on detraining rates Anglaise if you want specific info, from memory I think that after about 2 weeks of no exercise you would start to notice the reversal of some of the body's adaptations
Very probably varies from person to person

As I understand it tapering is about providing enough stimulus to prevent detraining but stopping short of inducing fatigue, probably lots of detailed info on the web if you want to search😊

KeyserSophie · 05/03/2016 11:09

Seriously, taper!!!! I order you Grin. I know it makes you feel really ugh and lazy but it's so important. Let the dog get fat for a week. The key thing to remember is that any big/ hard runs between now and the race will do nothing to improve your performance and may detract from it.

For London I did a 3 week taper- a week of skiing and then 2 weeks of 3-5k 2-3 times a week. It felt ALL wrong but on the day, I was flying. Didn't feel tired till mile 23.

lastqueenofscotland · 05/03/2016 16:30

3.1 parkrun miles feeling much happier. 300 odd runners and I was 20th last and won my age category

109.05

lastqueenofscotland · 05/03/2016 19:17

I wasn't 20th last!!! 20th lady

cinnamongreyhound · 05/03/2016 20:29

Good news on the ankle KeyserSophie!

I don't know a lot but I've always tapered on coaches from my clubs advice. I'm not as fast as you but it all makes sense!

A slowish parkrun and there and back today in the rain and hail!!!! 113.05

Sorelip · 06/03/2016 08:50

Hi everyone, I've not been around for a while. I've been very lazy, so I did something a bit silly; I signed up for race to the stones 100k. I've got 10 miles to add for March. In going to catch up on the thread, and be back in a bit.

emummy · 06/03/2016 10:08

Beautiful sun morning, lovely long run along flat route for a change, then home to pancakes & smoothie made by my lovely children! Not a bad day so far! Off to cross country shortly with dd2 for last race of the league, fingers crossed for a good result
