Result! Dd2 2nd overall in our local cross country! She's well chuffed with herself and so am I! A great Mother's Day present, beautiful sunny day too, though absolutely freezing

lastqueenofscotland · 06/03/2016 16:41

20 miles today in 3:14 having told myself to forget pace. Felt really really slow, almost too easy. So hopeful of a good showing at London in 7 weeks time!

lastqueenofscotland · 06/03/2016 16:42

Congrats to emummy daughter too

Anglaise1 · 06/03/2016 16:53

Excellent time LastQueen you are well on track for a good time in the London Marathon. I hope that boosted your confidence.
Congrats for the cross country to your DD emmumy. I hope the ground was less underwater than for the French national cross final today, the runners needed flippers rather than spikes!
No mother's day in France today, so Sunday as normal, training session with the club for 10 miles. Will really try and taper this week as Strava is showing that I somehow clocked up 60 miles last week Blush.

Taper Anglaise, taper! You can do it!
Conditions at xc were not under water - boggy ground, light covering snow, bright sunshine and Arctic wind! Xc, you gotta love it!

Anglaise1 · 06/03/2016 18:17

emummy yes xc is really something else. The French are in awe of the British xc events. It is still the holy grail of competitions here. If you are a good xman or xwoman you can run anything, anywhere! I quite like them but never get past regional level. For national level when the women start at over 17+k/h it is something else. You have to love mud.

FiftyNineOhEight · 06/03/2016 18:52

a HM from me today after hardly any running for the last 10 days thanks to work and life getting in the way Smile. So not a brilliant time (but not my worst), and quite sore legs, and only 12.98 miles by my garmin.

Well done to edaughter Star Star

Brilliant lastqueen you've had a great weekend!

Sorelip are you MAD Grin?

Great time lastqueenofscotland!

Well done to your dd emummy and your lovely morning run.

How was it this year FiftyNineOhEight?

I had planned to speak to my family about entering a race today and fitting Mother's Day around it but it sold out. A place became available Friday evening which I said I wanted Saturday morning as we figured we could get back just in time for lunch with my mum but no one got back to me so I didn't do it Sad

FiftyNineOhEight · 06/03/2016 20:35

It was good thank you cinners - pretty much the same route as we did, but in reverse so starting in the west and finishing in the east. The guided busway did not feel quite as miserable as I remembered Smile. I was a minute and a half slower, but as I'd only run up to 10 miles once since my last half in December - and that was about 10 days ago - I have only myself and my lack of training to blame Grin

Hello everyone, I've been following this thread for a while but this is my first post! :) I ran a 10k for the first time for the Stroke Association yesterday and I really enjoyed it! I'm planning on running a half marathon in September, with a few 10ks and/or 10 mile events in the meantime to make sure I remain focused and on track.

I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or advice, or websites and books, on how to improve my speed and times? I ran the 10k in roughly 54 minutes and 24 seconds, I'd really like to get my 10k times down to under 50 and eventually 45.

Anglaise1 · 07/03/2016 17:01

Welcome to the thread April and congratulations on your first 10k! To improve your 10k time there are lots of ways listed on the internet, but speed training is the most obvious one, either by intervals, hills or fartlek and tempo training. Can I ask how old you are? Because to improve your 10k time by 10 minutes is quite a task, especially if you are already quite fit and running a 10 in under an hour. I started runnng properly 2.5 years ago and did my fist 10k in 46m28s, since then I've got down to 45m40s but I'm not really hopeful of getting below that now I'm 50.
Good luck!

AprilDHarvey · 07/03/2016 18:33

Hi Anglaise1 Smile
Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely be googling those tonight when I get home. I'm 20, about to turn 21, so probably one of the youngest on this thread and site Blush I'm seriously impressed by your 10k times. Those are amazing, well done!

Anglaise1 · 07/03/2016 19:05

April that's different then, you are young Smile and therefore thre is a lot of potential! If you really want to improve I'd recommend joining a running club. You will have training sessions and be motivated by running and training with other people. Interval training is almost fun when you do it with other people!

KeyserSophie · 08/03/2016 02:03

Great work lastqueen. What are you targeting at London? Sub-4?

Welcome April and I'd second what Anglaise says about running clubs. They are usually quite affordable and run track sessions which help you get your pace up.

sorelip I'm also doing RTTS this year. I'm not sure that I'll be very well prepared for it as I live in HK and it's impossible to do long training runs through late May/June on account of the heat. However, if the worst comes to the worst I'll just trot around eating all the cake.

Just adding 5 from gym commutes yesterday to make 224.23. Doing track tonight. Then not much else till my race on Saturday.

lastqueenofscotland · 08/03/2016 13:32

Keyser sub 4 is what I'm aiming for however my mum ran it a few times and her best time was 4;15 on the nose so I'd be delighted with 4:14:59Grin

Me.... Competitive?!

FlukeSkyeRunner · 08/03/2016 15:32

Can anyone recommend running gloves for someone with long skinny fingers (I'm dead attractive, me!). It was freezing last night when I ran...

cinnamongreyhound · 08/03/2016 21:41

I don't wear gloves when I run FlukeSkyeRunner so really can't help.

Sounds like you're on for a sub 4hr lastqueenofscotland.

Welcome AprilDHarvey, running clubs are the way to go for sure. Or interval training on your own if you're disciplined enough!

4 lovely miles tonight 228.23

FiftyNineOhEight · 08/03/2016 22:37

I like your style lastqueen Smile

Welcome April, we are glad to have you Smile

Fluke I have some Nike running/cycling gloves DH bought me for Christmas. They are nice and thin and light and warm.

Did track last night- temperature was 23 degrees and sweaty as hell. Then just did my usual 10k gym school run/commute today- pretty lethargically. On the way there I stopped for a coffee and a croissant and on the way back I was granny running due to a big kettlebell session. 11 miles in total makes

239.23

My friend recce'd the course for Saturday's race and said the last 14k is brutal and so technical it's barely runnable, so I reckon it'll be a 9 hr effort. Ugh. At least the polar vortex is supposed to come back so the temperatures will drop off a bit.

lastqueenofscotland · 09/03/2016 22:07

6.85 worked on getting faster each mile but miscalculated the route so the last mile was Erm... Not a whole mile. Trying to not let my commute runs turn into junk and speed up my base milage/easy pace.

Keyser I don't know who you ultra runners do it. I had one go at trail running and just find the surface gives nothing back. Roads roads roads for me!

cinnamongreyhound · 10/03/2016 06:54

4 from me all without head torch despite starting 15mins earlier than normal Smile there's soooooo many puddles in the forest 250.08

emummy · 10/03/2016 11:50

So nice to get out in the day.ight cinnamon!
Nice hilly run in the first for me, first since Sunday as have been a nit under the weather. Felt good today though

Anglaise1 · 10/03/2016 16:35

Keyser Good luck with your ultra on Saturday, I hope your ankle holds up OK and that you manage to do it in under 9 hours. It sounds like a helluva race!
I'm signing out for the time being with 30 miles for this week (half of my normal mileage and no speedwork, so tapering for me!). We fly out to Barcelona tomorrow and I can't wait to get there, forecast is sunny and 18°c so perfect for the marathon on Sunday, perhaps even a little too warm compared to the wind, rain and cod weather we've had here in Brittany this week.
Good luck to everyone else racing this week.

lastqueenofscotland · 10/03/2016 18:06

Good luck Anglaise and enjoy!

lastqueenofscotland · 11/03/2016 07:58

6.1 to add, no junk milage this week. Racing Sunday so won't run tomorrow
