Wow cinnamon! Well done.

I don't think I'll run today I bought my stuff to work but feeling a bit wiped out after yesterday's ridiculous effort, and I'm doing a hill session tomorrow.
I was wondering if anyone had any good strength exercises I could do at home tonight? It's something I definitely need to start incorporating into my training.

KeyserSophie · 25/01/2016 11:23

That's brilliant Cinnamon- well done.

Just 5 from me to make 1107.95. Going to taper this week. Not fit for this marathon so my best hope is fresh legs and a tonne of gels Grin

Crazy weekend in HK due to the "polar vortex". It was the HK100 which is THE race of the season - all the top local racers and a fair few Europeans too. It got abandoned 20 hrs in because there was so much ice on one of the road descents that it wasn't passable. I can hear all the Scots on this thread laughing, but we don't have so much as a single gritting machine in HK. It might have been ok, had loads of locals not piled into their cars and driven up said (usually deserted) road to try to see the frost (yes, this is a rare and exciting phenomenon here). Therefore, you had a gridlocked icy road, with cars and runners skidding all over the place. It then got quite serious as a few people got hypothermic up on the peaks due to not having appropriate gear, and they had to scramble the helicopters. All v exciting and a massive lesson in not blagging the mandatory gear checks.

lastqueenofscotland · 25/01/2016 12:52

Keyser as an ex Hong konger that's surprised me!! Crazy rain yes- ice no!!

Anglaise1 · 25/01/2016 16:33

Excellent 10k Cinnamon you must be really pleased! Well done to your little greyhound too.
Last Queen I do strength exercises twice a week at home. I don't have weights or anything but a mat and I do the following (which is what we do on the Tuesday evening winter session with the club)
3 reps of: Front plank x 1mn, left side plank x 1mn, right side plank x 1mn, back plank x 1mn
3 x 15 drop leg crunches
3 x 15 bicycle crunches
2 reps of the chair x 1mn

7,5 with the dog in the lovely spring sunshine, T shirt and shorts, a bit different to a week ago!

Last Q this Runners World article just popped up on my FB page
10 strength exercises for runners

emummy · 26/01/2016 10:31

Just a short run this morning, weather just unpleasant, couldn't face a longer one!
Was reading about the problems the cold weather is causing keyser, sounds awful. I did read once that more people die of hypothermia in warm countries in winter than in cold ones, I guess because they're not prepared? Hope you are keeping warm!

MyBlackCat · 26/01/2016 19:17

I couldn't face it today, it was too windy. I've entered a duathlon why? so yesterday did a bike, run, bike, run session in gym - not much but 1.5 miles to add 1119.95

cinnamongreyhound · 26/01/2016 19:46

Very windy here too MyBlackCat! Effort session with my friend who's aiming for a parkrun pb by the end of March. 1123.95

Anglaise1 · 26/01/2016 21:07

Windy and rainy but it'll be worse tomorrow, we are due to get storm Jonas soon. 10 miles dog running and club session with 16 x 200m intervals in 46s.
1133.95

lastqueenofscotland · 26/01/2016 23:32

Tah for strength exercises guys. Got stuck at work so didn't make club. Did a quick 2 miles for the sake of my limited sanity. Can't wait to go for a decent run tomorrow

1135.95

FiftyNineOhEight · 27/01/2016 09:51

Windy here too, but I am in running gear - have a few jobs to do before heading out.

As I haven't seen it mentioned yet, just thought I'd mention that the ballot for the Royal parks HM is open Smile. I'd love to do it one day.

Enjoy your run Fifty, and Last I hope you get time to do a decent run today. After last nights intervals I had a PITA during this morning's dog run so the 6.6 miles weren't very fast (the blustery wind didn't help either!)

FiftyNineOhEight · 27/01/2016 16:58

Thanks Anglaise, 6 wet and blustery miles completed Smile

5.2. still much more tired than I thought if be post Sunday long run 1153.75

cinnamongreyhound · 28/01/2016 07:26

4 crisp dark miles to add, very enjoyable this morning 1157.75

KeyserSophie · 28/01/2016 08:21

5 from me, just getting to the gym for a massive roll and stretch, makes 1162.75.

Decided just to go for it in this marathon on Saturday as nothing to lose- so long as I finish I'll get league points and it's not the sort of course that forces a DNF if you blow up, at least not in this weather (back up to 16 degrees!)

emummy It's exactly that- because we rarely have cold weather, homes and schools have no heating so it's hard to warm up if you get cold. DS doesnt even have any school trousers as he prefers to wear shorts year round. The school uniform has no coat (just a fleece). The issue with the race was that people couldnt get down the road due to the ice, so were then moving v slowly and got v cold- it was mainly the hikers who were affected as the runners had all got in by then.

emummy · 28/01/2016 11:26

Beautiful day here, though cold with a chilly wind. Up a hill through the forest with dog, tried out new route and didn't get lost, hurray!
1167

MyBlackCat · 28/01/2016 16:42

5.5 off road miles from me which were a real struggle, totally not feeling it today, so over running through thick mud.

1172.5

Anglaise1 · 28/01/2016 17:00

8.75 from this morning's run with a friend, birds singing, sun shining, so nice after all the wind and rain of yesterday. 10k race Sunday so shouldn't run anymore this week but probably will tomorrow
1181.25

lastqueenofscotland · 28/01/2016 20:38

4.6 miles from me. Good to turn on the taps and go a but quick Grin
1185.85

FiftyNineOhEight · 28/01/2016 21:00

2.5 sunny and breezy lunchtime miles to de-stress after an absolutely horrible morning at work and to calm me down before a live assessment of something I do as part of my job - it worked, I passed, hooray, and as well as having my competence validated I also get bit of money for it. Good job, as I need new running shoes Smile

Best wishes for Saturday Keyser

did anyone catch the outdoor vs treadmill running bit in 'trust me I'm a doctor' (bbc iplayer) ?

cinnamongreyhound · 28/01/2016 22:13

Yes meeee!! Of course WE knew that already!

suzannecaravaggio · 28/01/2016 22:34

:o Cinna well I knew it felt a whole lot better (running outside) and seems much easier at any speed, but I hadnt really considered how much less likely overuse injuries are.
I had a vague idea that treadmill would be better because of lower impact

suzannecaravaggio · 28/01/2016 23:46

mind you the rest of the program is so dumbed down and patronising I'm not sure why I should give any credence to their verdictHmm
