8.75 miles in the drizzle. I hope the weather is better for this weekend, I'm a volunteer to help out with the Rennes marathon from 5.30am on Sunday morning with others from the club, it would be nice not to be in the rain all morning!
Suzanne my PITA is always worse after a race or intervals. Can you persuade your OH to slow down a little when he runs with you?

Easy 4.8 from me tonight

suzannecaravaggio · 22/10/2015 20:18

kinda my fault Anglaise I pushed myself so as not to be too slow a running partner, next time I'll just stick to whatever pace feels right at the time and he'll have to lump it or run on ahead :o

no you dont want to be stuck in the rain all morning :(...you'll be able to wear waterproofs?

MyBlackCat · 22/10/2015 20:28

I've not been able to run for a week as had soreness in my foot. It's not perfect but I managed just over three miles. I'm on holiday and ran at sunrise before its got too hot- loved it Grin

suzannecaravaggio · 22/10/2015 20:51

thats good new Blackcat sometimes just slowing down and taking it easy is enough

Anglaise1 · 22/10/2015 21:24

Suzanne yes, we get a free K way (cagoule?) and then there is liubch with champagne for all volunteers 29th Nov. It is a French championship race this year, so lots of élite runners which will be interesting. We have to prepare and give out all the refueling for the elite runners in the race.

Very quick post from me as I'm on the way to the airport for a weeks holiday. Good luck to all those racing this weekend and next.

Adding in 5.14 from yesterday. Can't add to total on phone without making a mistake as it's far too early.....

cinnamongreyhound · 23/10/2015 09:53

Hope it's dry for you Anglaise1, sounds like fun Smile

Glad you had a nice walk FiftyNineOhEight.

Sounds lovely MuBlackCat, I ran before sunrise with the stars above me and frost on the ground!!!

4 miles from me and Loueytb3's 5.14 makes 985.14

HalleLouja · 23/10/2015 10:15

8.3 miles to add from me makes 993.44.

I am enjoying my sessions with my new coach. We did 6 x 500m again with a 90 sec break. Plus had a really lovely run yesterday with my club. It was one of those runs when you almost forget you are running.

Am on holiday from tomorrow but will be taking my trainers. Enjoy your break Louey.

Blackcat well done on your run on your sore foot.

Anglaise1 · 23/10/2015 16:49

10 miles to add with the dog. I noticed that on my Garmin 210 forerunner that when I wear the heart monitor, the calories burnt are much lower than when I don't. The calories burnt number is probably rubbish anyway, but I'm puzzled as to the difference, which is about 30% so quite significant!

4.1 holiday miles from me, wet and windy today so was an afternoon effort after giving up hope of seeing the sun, foot felt better than yesterday but not perfect so they were slow and steady miles

suzannecaravaggio · 23/10/2015 16:57

Anglaise the algorithm they use is tailored to the average person, so for example on average a person of x height and y weight would burn 600 cals per hour with a hr of 150, same size person with a higher v02 max would be burning 700 cals per hour at that hr.

If you mess about with the settings on the garmin, eg tell it you are male and younger it will assume a higher VO2 max and that may give you a more accurate reading.

I find this quite useful www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/heart-rate-based-calorie-burn-calculator.aspx

Anglaise1 · 23/10/2015 18:01

Thanks Suzanne, that is interesting.
I now know why my calorie burn is so low, its because my heart rate is low. For running 10km at a speed of 10kph my heart rate is around 122 bpm, so I only burn 450 calories. If my heart rate was 144bpm for the same distance and speed (as a running friend's is) I would burn 600 cals per hour according to your calculator. It is because my heart rate is so slow! I'll just have to eat one less biscuit with my cup of tea for my recuperation after a long run now!

no you don't need to eat less, you are not burning less
heart rate does not give an absolute measurement of energy expenditure, it's relative.

EG

person A runs 6 miles in one hour at an average HR of 130bpm
person B (same height, weight & running efficiency ) 6 miles in one hour at an average HR of 160bpm

they both burn 600 calories

for person A 130 bpm is the heart rate which is commensurate with an energy expenditure of 600 cal/hour

for person B 160 bpm is the heart rate which is commensurate with an energy expenditure of 600 cal/hour

person A has a more efficient CV system and so for any given level of energy expenditure her heart doesn't need to beat as fast.

suzannecaravaggio · 23/10/2015 18:26

it's confusing I know but the only way to accurately measure calorie expenditure is to measure the amounts of oxygen and CO2 breathed in and out.

You can reverse engineer/extrapolate using HR data and measuring at the amount you eat, but then hr gets lower as you get fitter so it's a moving targetConfused

Just done first ever night run in the woods! Started with woods on the edge of town, so easy return to civilization if I got spooked. It was great though, lovely and quiet and the head torch performed very well, so feeling more confident about next month's night trail race. Ddog was excellent companion, she stuck by my side for a change and I chatted away to her!

Thanks so much for your brilliant advice about the fuelling Keyser and thanks Anglaise too. I seem to have picked up somewhere along the line that gels can be relied on too heavily these days. I wouldn't be too sure my stomach would be able to handle eating and running myself. I always eat a couple of hours before going out. I've ate and ran an hour later before and had bad stomach cramps. It's given me something to think about anyway.

Glad you enjoyed your night run emummy, you're far braver than me. I'd be too much of a wimp to run in the woods in the dark. Overactive imagination and watch far too many horror movies.

Class cinnamon, they look raring to go.

4.15 from yesterday. Wasn't meant to go out but the dc are off half-term and had me climbing the walls with arguing. Needed that break. Taking a weekend away from parkrun and trying a kettlebells and suspension training class instead. I have no upper body strength so it may be a challenge.

emummy · 23/10/2015 22:41

Great pic cinnamon! Loving the torches. Ddog has a light up collar which is bright orange, but has an annoying tendency to switch itself off!
Glad you got out for a run custard. Coming to the end of 2 weeks of the "tattie" holidays here, running has kept me sane! And I am a terrible wimp, am rather surprised I didn't have a panic attack - think constantly chatting to the dog helped! Next week I will have to go to the big forest instead, not thinking about that!

KeyserSophie · 24/10/2015 04:16

Love the head torch wearing dogs!

Adding another 5 to make 1019.69. Hit the trails for a bit to test my ankle, which maybe wasn't the best idea given that I didn't have my contact lenses in (couldn't get them in as I'd chopped chilis last night and it seems to have seeped into my fingertips).

Anyway, I survived it. Left foot and lower leg a bit niggly on uphill runs (ok on steps) but I think with a gentle week this week I should be all set for Saturday's 70k. Might actually benefit me by slowing me down over the first half.
