Louey I have permanent tendonitis in my knee (as well as my bum), but the pain is on the inside of the knee not the outside which is ITB. It isn't bad enough to stop me running!
Suzanne you could do longer intervals so people won't think that is your sprint speed? I mix it up on my training plans, the shorter ones are 200m in 45s 300m in 1m12, but then sometimes 5 x 1000m in 4m20 if those figures mean anything to you! My coach still gets us to do too many IMO. Am waiting for him to be a 80:20 long and slow: short and fast convert. At the moment its more like 65:35.
Glad the new shoes are OK, are they the same make and model as the last ones? I'll be trying out my new Mizuno Waveriders this weekend for a relay race around the local villages tomorrow (my leg is only around 5kms) and then Sunday for the HM.
9,4 from me today, yes I know I shouldn't have but it was an easy pace.

Shoes are my second pair of hoka constants, I'm also running in altras but the constants are my favourite right now :)
All my clothing and shoe budget is now directed towards running shoes.Blush

I probably would do longer intervals, Anglaise, perhaps I could run as fast as I can whilst maintaining an air of 'hey, this is just my easy jogging pace' :o

do quite like the idea of 'running without the brakes on'...on a long run I feel kind of weighed down and held back by the thought that I have to keep this up for another 10 miles or so.
I usually run a couple of faster sections at the end of a run but would be nice to (try to) fire on all cylinders with fresh legs.

HalleLouja · 04/09/2015 18:07

Louey mine is also too the side but underneath....

Suzanne then there is also hill training. I usually warm up for about a mile before doing either. Then cool down. Fartleks (I have only done these once) were quite testing too.

suzannefollowmyvan · 04/09/2015 20:29

hill training, I've been avoiding hill for months now Halle Blush

does anyone have a recommendation for very loose fitting lightweight running t-shirt?
I have a puma t shirt that I bought years ago which is super light fabric, all other running t-shirts (nike, under armour, gore) seem thick and heavy by comparison.

Neeko · 04/09/2015 21:02

Hi. No miles to add. Just marking my place to read all your chat until my next run.

Anglaise1 · 04/09/2015 21:29

Suzanne I only run in T shirts that I get from doing races...I rarely buy them! Some are better quality than others, though, but I don't really know the difference. In summer I only run in vest tops or brassières. Had to go back to T shirts this week as it is really chilly for the start of November here (only 10°C in the morning).

Sorry to hear that Anglaise1!

What is the distance runtothehills? Enjoy Smile

I totally agree with the suzannefollowmyvan, I hate them but feel great afterwards. And sod the other park users, you're not all out sprinting anyway just doing a specific speed. They won't know what particular session you're doing so don't worry about them.

suzannefollowmyvan · 04/09/2015 21:41

I only run in vest tops

that would be the sensible thing in the heat, I just dont like exposing quite that much skin to the sun, having been a sun avoider for about 30 years now.
It's quite a jump for me to be out in shorts and a t-shirt even, my legs are tanned this year for the first time in decades.
Strangely my legs have freckled, when I used to fry myself in the sun get a tan as a teenager I'm sure I just went an even sort of brown colour.

Or are those liver spots on my legsShock Confused

KeyserSophie · 05/09/2015 07:18

Adding 12.5 to make 178.21. Nice morning out on the trails with friends. Hot but great visibility and gorgeous views from Lantau Peak.

suzanne I have a couple of very lightweight tops- one is Salomon and the other Ron Hill. They are sleeveless but am sure there will also be sleeved styles.

SocksRock · 05/09/2015 07:38

Can I rejoin you lot? I've been suffering with shin splints all year - and not exercising as much as usual means I've put on a lot of weight, so the impact on my shins is going to be that much worse once I start again.

Anyway, my youngest child starts preschool on Monday so I'm going to start the c25k very slowly round the field behind preschool to try and get moving again. I have ice packs waiting at home for post run.

I will be posting pathetic mileage to start with, but I really need to do this.

Any other hints for post shin splints training please?

emummy · 05/09/2015 07:57

Suzanne I can recommend both Ronhill t shirts and Helly Hansen, with the latter being my absolute favourite - I now have one in 4 different colours! They are very soft and I find I am not aware of them when running, which is perfect I think. I have 2 Ronhill vests as well but they are saved for the rare occasions when the north east of Scotland gets hot!

lastqueenofscotland · 05/09/2015 11:42

Welcome back socks.

Livid at myself today :( did a 10k went off having only had a gulp of water on the way out the house so not hydrated at all, and far far too fast wheels fell off at 7k. SO CROSS.
Line through it and keep going. If anything is motivation to train harder it's that!
Guess I learnt something if nothing else.

MyBlackCat · 05/09/2015 14:13

Welcome back socks

I have an awful 3.1 parkrun miles to add, felt terrible but at least I did it.

187.51

suzannefollowmyvan · 05/09/2015 16:17

thanks Keyser and Emummy will pay special attention to those brands!

Socks other than build up very gradually I'm not sure what to say on the subject of shin splints, but we'll be waiting for you to report back on Monday to let us know how the first walk-run session went:)

suzannefollowmyvan · 05/09/2015 16:18

Sorry to hear about the awful runs Lastqueen and Blackcat :(

familygermsareok · 05/09/2015 17:31

Suzanne have you thought about hill sprints? Different to regular hill reps. At the start you are only recommended to do 2 eight second sprints so it's over with incredibly quickly and can be added into a regular run (if you have a handy hill!) And you are supposed to be energised rather than exhausted afterwards for the run home. I started doing them in the summer and felt really good. I liked them better than intervals. Although I appreciate that for serious racers the mixture of run types is needed.
I'm like you, though, and run mainly for the enjoyment and endorphins, with a few added races for interest and challenges Grin
Had to stop doing since Achilles flared up (possibly related) but I'm going to try again once it's properly settled.
I have a very light loose Adidas top which is lovely to wear. Usually I prefer close fitting ones though as they're less flappy if they get wet. Agree Ronhill also lightweight but a bit short in the body for my taste.

Hi Socks , good luck with the return to training. No experience of shin splints, but I think a gradual, patient build up is best.

Hope your next runs are better lastqueen and BlackCat. At least you did them

Good luck with race today runtothehills Smile

familygermsareok · 05/09/2015 17:49

I have some better miles to add, 4.84 from Thurs morning and 8.12 this morning. Wasn't sure I should be doing the longer one but DS1 was keen and I wasn't difficult to persuade Wink
Achilles still not great but no worse for running through it this time so hopefully that's me back on track, yippee Smile Smile

187.51 + 12.96 = 200.47

MyBlackCat · 05/09/2015 18:52

Thanks for the links family very interesting - I think I will be adding some hill sprints to my runs Smile

Anglaise1 · 05/09/2015 20:20

Sorry about your crappy runs whoever has had them! HOpe your race went well today runtothehills. Glad your Achilles problem is not such a problem Family.
My knee tendonitis was quite bad after the relay race today, not sure if it was because it was only a short distance at a high speedish (13.5kph) or the fact that the physio is treating it. Am still going to do the HM tomorrow morning. Even if I have to jog it instead of run it! (there is a nice T shirt).
3.2 from my relay race - my team was second, but it is just fun taking part.

2.34 miles from me this evening, legs doing ok, no recurrence of shin splints yet... Still taking it very gently, and planning to increase my distance back up by small increments each week. Hopefully my new shoes are doing the trick. socks have you got plenty of wear in your running shoes? I'm pretty sure I caused shin splints by not replacing my shoes soon enough, the lady in the running shop where I got my new ones said my old ones were well past it.

203.67+2.34=206.01

runtothehills · 05/09/2015 20:48

Hills Suzanne let me tell you about hills, they are a bloody relentless nightmare Grin Grin Grin

9 miles today and 1400 ascent. Stunningly beautiful day but didn't get much opportunity to look at the view. Struggled first half on stone path-crafted steps (need to come out for steps and heat bootcamp in HK with you Keyser) but pulled it back on good old Scottish scree, grass and mud. Would liked to have been 10 min faster, but I feel positive about the run and the atmosphere was amazing (think running through tunnels of people cheering you on).

I ran today in club vest, but normally I like anything Merino as it's so comfy.

Welcome back socks, any miles are good miles Smile

212.67

cinnamongreyhound · 05/09/2015 21:36

Hi SocksRock and don't be negative about your distance, all mileage is welcome Grin

Sorry you didn't make it to your 10k lastqueenofscotland, a fast shorter run will be of some benefit though.

Well done runtothehills!

Sorry to hear about sore knees Anglaise1, hope tomorrow goes well.

I was overseeing our new rd at parkrun today so no running. Going to do a canicross run tomorrow, baby permitting as its an unusual time for me to run.

Sorelip · 05/09/2015 21:49

4 from me, bringing the total to 216.67.

Purpletoes · 05/09/2015 23:15

2.8 from me. *219.47

Did a quick hill session this evening as things have been conspiring against me this week in getting out for a run. **

Hope to get out more this week.

Going to read through the thread now. Smile
