My iPod nano do ancient (2nd generation I think). It has a white bit that goes into it (like the part when you charge it) and I have a chip in a pouch that ties onto my shoe laces. You calibrate it when you first use it. The parts on my shoe and in the iPod talk to each other and it knows how far and how long it took me to run. You can plug it into the computer and look at them all or they are stored on the iPod as we'll.

On my phone there is also the nike plus thing but it is in there already and so you don't need the plugging in part.

But not sure what up to date iPod nanos are like Grin

MirandaWest · 25/10/2013 22:09

Ah looks like you don't need the other parts anymore

cinnamongreyhound · 26/10/2013 11:00

I used to use nike+ on my iPod before I donated to my mum for her walking and I didn't have anything to go with it, was pretty accurate and you can calibrate it too if you know the distance from mapmyrun for example or a parkrun :)

I go for the phone in an armband thing too, but I find the armband thing quite irritating - it will be better when it gets cold enough for a long-sleeved running shirt.

I have downloaded a 10k plan from Endomondo and did session 1 today which was peasy but involved 6x20 second intervals of faster running. I haven't done intervals for ages and had forgotten how knackering they are!

Longer run tomorrow hopefully.

BerstieSpotts · 26/10/2013 22:26

Ahh armband thing seems so obvious! I'll have a look on amazon.

CiderwithBuda · 26/10/2013 23:19

Hi all.

Having not run for two weeks I went out today. Was up to week 7 so just tried that again telling myself I could just do what I could do. Managed to run the 25 mins. Although embarrassingly was overtaken by someone walking. Blush. Oh well.

I will do another week 7 run before moving on to week 8.

BIWI · 27/10/2013 07:49

I haven't run for 2 weeks either, Buda. The longer it goes without getting out there, the harder it is!

We have people staying at the moment and although I'm awake and up now, and it's lovely and sunny here - I can't go out because my running gear is in the room our friends are asleep in.

So I'm going to try and go later, once they've gone. I doubt very much I'll manage a sub-30 minute time after a fortnight off, but I'll just be glad to get back running.

I also need to find a route I can do in the dark. Now I'm having to actually go to work I can't just go out running when I feel like it, so I will have to run before (or after) work, when it will be dark, and I really don't like the idea of running on my own in the park when it's dark.

jchocchip · 27/10/2013 08:33

I know, running in the dark is another reason to put it off to the evening, when you realise it is dark when you get home from work too! At least with the xlocks changing we have an extra hour of light in the morning....

cinnamongreyhound · 27/10/2013 09:01

I bought myself a headtorch and run with that, doesn't help with motivation but means I have more options :)

CiderwithBuda · 27/10/2013 09:10

I don't think I would fancy running in the dark.

MirandaWest · 27/10/2013 10:11

I have run in the dark but I don't much like it.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 27/10/2013 10:58

I prefer running in the dark - no-one recognises me!

I run around fairly well lit streets and have never felt concerned.

BIWI · 27/10/2013 17:14

Went out today, but it was hard work and it was slow - partly because it was a bit boggy underfoot, and it was also hot!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 27/10/2013 19:08

The weather has beaten me today I'm afraid.

This is the first time that I've decided against going out for a run because of the weather but I went to collect ds1 from a party an hour ago and the wind nearly blew me over!

It'll be Tuesday now before I get chance to go.

UsedToBeNDP · 27/10/2013 19:14

Right, well. Finally today was the day that I began my C210k training plan journey. Yipped on about it for ages, had the app on my phone since Sept last year (Blush), started it about 3 times and lost interest. Swore to myself I'd restart about 4/52 ago and did bugger all about it. Today I did.

W1/R1 done Grin

I am doing it on a treadmill at the gym due to weather/time of year. Have previously run on the road.

cinnamongreyhound · 27/10/2013 22:16

Well done UsedToBeNDP!

I went out today and it was tough going against the wind at points but not too bad.

MirandaWest · 27/10/2013 23:18

Am intending to go running tomorrow morning. Potentially at the same time as my boyfriend. Although we've only run together once before and that was a park run about a year ago when I was faster than him. Don't think I am anymore.

CrystalDeCanter · 28/10/2013 00:00

I'm going for wk2r1 in my lunch hour today, it's really windy here though, prob not as bad as with you lot - is the storm really awful?

I had a bad weekend on the exercise front and am feeling a little low on motivation. Must just do it!

UsedToBeNDP · 28/10/2013 08:48

Thank you greyhound Blush

Be careful in that wind, Crystal !

MirandaWest · 28/10/2013 09:22

Am about to go running. Am up north so not very windy but just wet. I don't like wet.

MirandaWest · 28/10/2013 10:17

I did my running. It was wet Grin. But the cap helped. 5k on 29 min 25 seconds :)

cinnamongreyhound · 28/10/2013 10:40

Suns out here now, hasn't been as bad a predicted. Glad you've done your run MirandaWest, good time too :)

UsedToBeNDP · 28/10/2013 10:57

Oh well done Miranda. Nasty weather is why I've reverted to doing this plan at the gym.

A couple of years ago I did the 5k programme outdoors (started around late summer/early Autumn) and found the weather was half the battle.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 28/10/2013 16:06

Hi, can I join? I've never been much of a runner but I started about 5 weeks ago as I had a baby 18 weeks ago and a disability and need to get fitter.

I did my first 3k run yesterday, it was actually really quite fun (but very wet).

UsedToBeNDP · 28/10/2013 19:34

Well done Schro Smile

Congratulations on the baby and the 3k !
