All ye fine runners who wish to get together to discuss running-related topics, or otherwise, come and join us here. We are a friendly and incredibly supportive group of runners, varying in ability, but all bonded together by a common theme of loving running, committed to squeezing it into our busy lives and wanting to improve our own PBs. So whether you are a full-time mum, part-time working mum, full-time working mum, working from home mum, mum who is studying, or even a dad Grin, add your race to the list so you can be sure of some moral support and advice along the way. And if you aren't racing, don't worry as you can enjoy the race reports and race vicariously.

Internal! I have no chafe due to new running wardrobe!

monkeyLFDTwench · 12/12/2011 13:20

Ah, mine is definitely a bit of cheeky chub rub Wink!

rhetorician · 12/12/2011 14:20

sticky mean of you to be so down on the lovely ickle fluffy evil snarling out of control doubly incontinent doggies...

running that's a great time - did you do it all at 75%? the difference between 70% and 75 is considerable for me. I did a big long hill on my run which felt pretty good. But I do miss my miles...thinking I might sneak a run in on Thursday because the girls' dad will be here so DP will have someone to keep DD1 entertained. Plot, scheme, plot

RunningAllDay · 12/12/2011 15:25

Hi rhet - I averaged 142 which is less than my 75% (144). There was some higher as I still had about 1500ft of hills (can't avoid them here - although it was almost harder work sliding around in the mud on the flat along the river), but I did slow to a walk on the worst of them and never went above 80%. I don't find such a huge difference between 70 and 75 - but that may be because you are right and I have measure my max too low. I do find adhering to the 70% a bit limiting (I end up averaging HR at about 128 which seems incredibly low), and since I now know I can do 19miles averaging 75%, I'll stick with that! I have to say, the limiting factor was never breathlessness or feeling tired - it was my poor sorry legs by the end of the run. And I guess that's the point - LSRs being time spent hurting building up your legs.

Oh who knows! Good luck finding time for a run! Must be frustrating.

rhetorician · 12/12/2011 15:33

yes, I'm not sure how absolutely slavish you need to be - particularly when your max (unless you've actually had it tested) is an approximation - although you can revise it upwards when you see it IYSWIM. Some schools of thought insist that you shouldn't even go a beat over, but I'm not sure that Parker thinks like that...

I have taken off about a minute from a km at 142...

RunningAllDay · 12/12/2011 15:46

Well, that's testament to it working! I still can't imagine doing that hill you did earlier this year without stopping to walk.

rhetorician · 12/12/2011 15:47

I certainly feel fitter and my running is much easier, even at higher heart rates (and therefore paces); but I can see that some folks (yes, fanny I am talking about you!) just wouldn't be able to stick it...

AlmaWalkingInAWinterWonderland · 12/12/2011 16:27

Hope you feel better soon Futurity. Went out last night in the rain and felt very virtuous. Managed to run up one of our most evil hills which I'm proud of, couldn't have done it a few weeks ago.

I got out in the dark and alone but do stay on the pavements and avoid anywhere too isolated. It does worry me slightly but not much choice really. I do keep my phone in my hand though, not sure how much it would actually help!

peachLFDTsmuggler · 12/12/2011 16:55

Oh Debi, poor you, and poor DS. Hope the appointment goes well. Try not to be hard on yourself, lovely.

Sonic, that's a tough one, but a fact of life all the same. Nothing I can say though, as I know it must truly suck.

Running, wow that's some serious mileage, and a very impressive time. Sorry about the sore arse!

futurity, glad you got some powerdrugs! What a nightmare though, I really feel for you, that kind of thing is surprisingly debilitating. Hope you get better soon.

Rhet, hope all well with the family. Can't believe A is over a week old!!! Time realty flies. Am starting to feel nostalgic for the first week now! Guessing it's the lovely hormones that make you want to have baby after baby!!!

Have had one of those frustrating days when K has had lots of cat naps but nothing substantial and you spend more time getting them to sleep than they actually spend sleeping! She's in sling now and snoozing away. Love love love the sling. Having great nights now co-sleeping but don't think its sustainable for DP to be on sofa for next 4 months, or however long. Have very good intentions at night to put her back down in cot but after first waking (last night after an hour) it just makes so much more sense to bring her in bed and we can both just go back off to sleep! Early days anyway, so we'll see.

peachLFDTsmuggler · 12/12/2011 17:56

Can I ask those with children in preschool, what you got for a present for the "teachers". There are 5 at DD1's preschool and I suppose I was thinking chocolates, but are they likely to want to smack me over the head with these as they'll get loads? Any other ideas?

Wheelybug · 12/12/2011 18:10

Check no one is doing a collection peach - at both I have used they do a collection for Christmas and end of year gifts.

Just trying to get enthusiastic about dd1's school Christmas concert which starts at 7 pm. She is in it for about 5 mins in the infant choir, dh in exeter so I have to take dd2.....

11 miles this morning - I think a personal furthest. I thought i'd run 11 miles before the GSR but I did a similar route and had to run a lot further so think my previous watch had over measured somewhat !

Glad the thread babies are settling.

right... Where are those earplugs ?

sfxmum · 12/12/2011 18:26

futurity hope the drugs and rest work quickly

sonic it is a shame but it happens and there will be other occasions

peach our school does collections at the end of year but individual presents at Christmas, I let dd choose within reason, this year she got them mugs with their initials on, teacher and TA

managed a short and slow 5k and a bit, but lovely weather and hope to fit in more of the same tomorrow

the coughs and the colds have reached us but nothing much

rhetorician · 12/12/2011 20:42

wheely the baby is fine, it's the toddler that is causing us grief: she's quite good with the baby, although we really need to be able to get her out of DD1's way when she's sleeping, but bedtime is a nightmare - a full hour of shouting and demands - I know she feels a bit abandoned, but we are trying to praise good behaviour and reassure her a lot, as well as give her things to do (get nappies etc). She is a slightly stressy kid anyway

It's tough, juggling their very different needs, even though I think there's the basis of a good bond there.

backwardLFDTpossom · 12/12/2011 21:20

Fell off the page again. Had a bit of a wild weekend which involved karaoke and asking some of Central Scotland's finest beat bobbies to a party at the flat I was staying in. Umm, yes.

Anyhoo, back on it. It's our running club night out tomorrow night. On a Tuesday. I don't work on a Wednesday [hgrin]

I will try and catch up later :)

backwardLFDTpossom · 12/12/2011 21:20

shit it's Xmas Grin not h!

orangeLFDThead · 12/12/2011 21:20

Sonic that sucks about the concert. Im sure dd1 will be fine, but we can't help beating ourselves up over stuff like this.
Debi regarding teeth genes can be a factor. Also is she on any medication, make sure it sugar free. Ds1 has a few fillings and he has very good diet but then we realised his antihistame was not sugar free. Looks like that did all the damage.
Hope you feeling better soon sfx.
I have also had similar thing with neck futurity just woke up one morning in angony and little movement. It did resolve itself. Hope it feeling better soon.
Still no running here as cough quite bad, but getting very frustrated as I just want to get out.

SonicMiddleAge · 13/12/2011 00:11

Thanks everyone for the sympathy and the complete lack of unhelpful comments like "do you really have to go"
. debi I had loads of babytooth filling and if it's any consolation it made me very determined to avoid them in adult teeth, on which score so far so good (two dead front teeth courtesy of hockey balls but that's another matter! )

Bumply · 13/12/2011 00:59

Woke early for a pre breakfast run, but didn't make it out of bed.
Didn't give up on the plan of a run today, and managed a 5 k run this evening. 5 min at each each to warm up and cool down. 10 mins steady pace and then some 100m intervals with 1 min recovery. Was quite pleased to get some speed up for the intervals. Didn't have a specific route planned, just plodding the pavements til the distance was done and then a walk back for another 5 mins or so. Seems to suit me better than a planned route where I get psyched up in the wrong kind of way when I know I'm nearly done. Wearing shirt, thin jumper and thin fleece as my normal running fleece was still in the wash. Topped off with a crochet hat which seems to work quite well at keeping the worst of the chill out, but plenty of air holes for ventilation. Not the most becoming of looks, but that's an advantage of running in the dark Grin

Hope your neck gets better soon, futurity.
Sonic, bummer about missing concert. Ds2 doesn't seem to be having one this year, so I dont have to sort out time off. Not always easy at this time of year as everyone at work is trying to use up holidays before the year ends.
Liath, I'm at the foot of Arthur's seat rather than the penthills.
Someone asked about running apps a while ago. I use runkeeper to store my history of runs, but use ismoothrun for the actual runs. You can set up custom intervals and get updates on pace/ hr etc. as you run. Current new feature is recording what music you were listening to when you achieved your fastest pace. I also like the ghost runs where you repeat a run and it records if you're ahead or behind of the time you did previously. Nice way of improving on PBs.

Bumply · 13/12/2011 01:01

Debi, ds2 had 8 baby teeth removed in One go due to decay. I think it was due to his being undisguised coeliac at the time those teeth were developing, as he's had no problems with his remaining teeth since then.

AlmaWalkingInAWinterWonderland · 13/12/2011 07:48

Debi, and don't worry about teeth, and it does seem like there's nothing you can do sometimes.

I'm giving DD's preschool a tin of chocs and she made them a card.

Running pub this evening although weather here is meant to be foul so we'll see!

AlmaWalkingInAWinterWonderland · 13/12/2011 07:49

Running club.. Not sure what running pub would be!

DebiTheScot · 13/12/2011 09:21

Thanks for the teeth comments. My teeth are bad so that could be a factor. Shame he hasn't inherited dh's rock hard teeth. My sil is a dental hygienist and has given us some tips that might help too. It could be a while before he's seen but some of her suggestions (rubbing toothpaste onto teeth just before bed after teeth are brushed) should help it not get worse. She also told me not to use kids toothpaste as it's not got enough fluorine in it.

monkeyLFDTwench · 13/12/2011 12:59

Like the sound of a running pub Smile.

Managed a 3 mile trot round the block last night in the driving rain and wind - nice. SWSP this morning. Autoglass came to fit a new windscreen today (they fixed a chip and then on Saturday, three weeks later, the whole thing cracked) but it was too wet so have had to rebook.

Off to the school carol concert today, lovely but a logistical nightmare as the whole school/parents/staff are crammed into the biggest church they can find - unfortunately in the centre of Dunstable which is a problem to drive round at the best of times. Wish me luck!

fannybanjo · 13/12/2011 13:07

Twatting Christmas. That is all.

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 13/12/2011 14:03

What's up fanny? Everyone goes a bit mad at this time of year I think. I feel really stressed out by work/presents/life at the mo. Might have to have an emergency massage at the weekend - give yourself a treat fanny!
