All ye fine runners who wish to get together to discuss running-related topics, or otherwise, come and join us here. We are a friendly and incredibly supportive group of runners, varying in ability, but all bonded together by a common theme of loving running, committed to squeezing it into our busy lives and wanting to improve our own PBs. So whether you are a full-time mum, part-time working mum, full-time working mum, working from home mum, mum who is studying, or even a dad Grin, add your race to the list so you can be sure of some moral support and advice along the way. And if you aren't racing, don't worry as you can enjoy the race reports and race vicariously.

sticky and monkey too? it's teeming with lawyers here. moshi as well iirc. 8 hours??? shall I quit before I start?

Wheelybug · 29/11/2011 22:46

And I am married to 1. Also seems to be a far few medics through here.

Have a good night rhet

ange I run slower on a tm than outside.

Welcome smile ! We'll try and help motivate you.....

monkeyLFDTwench · 29/11/2011 22:52

Ah, is the GLD what we used to call the CPE? DH did the CPE, I did a law degree (he did Swedish and German) and we then met doing the LSF. 20 years ago now Shock.

Sorry for the nonsense post but it should make sense to other legal types!

Rhet the main problem with your chargeable hours target is that it fails to take account of work that is valuable - essential even - but not chargeable to a particular client. So (some) research, training, supervision, preparing for lectures, doing people favours, daydreaming, thinking time - all non chargeable. On the other hand we had one partner who was notorious for loading all his time shamelessly onto client files, he only had to walk past the file and an extra unit or two would find it's way onto the bill Confused.

stickyLFDTfingers · 29/11/2011 23:18

aaah, and the question of whose hours get written off. It's all fine when you've got your job, your client, your fee quote, just you and some juniors. But when it's some massive team, each department with its own charging policy, all the office politics.... nightmare. Why am I looking for another job again? Confused

hi smile and welcome!

I'm wondering how to cope with the running schedule this week. Tomorrow's the strike of course (which i fully support and realise my running isn't particularly important in the general scheme of things!) and Thursday's DD2's nativity in the morning, with associated entertainment of gps for the rest of the day. Perhaps the gps could entertain themselves while I slip off for an hour ... Wink

rhet keep thinking of you and the family. Hope all's well.

MoshiMoshi · 29/11/2011 23:22

Welcome smile or sis perhaps? Tell us a bit more about you and your running. It sounds like you are getting stuck into it (literally and metaphorically) if you are racing the cross-country season! Do you have any raves (sic) Grin or goals in mind? Them again you could tell me to go away and stop being so intrusive. Smile

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 29/11/2011 23:24

sis - PS you might find references to rubbing and raving quite a lot on here. It all came from a typo some time ago and has stuck!

MoshiMoshi · 29/11/2011 23:28

Ah, the law. I do miss the work but not private practice. Nor the long hours which seemed to stop any other sort of life happening... I am much happier at home. I am toying with the idea of sitting the Californian Bar Exam when we are settled in San Fran but am not sure of the argument as to why I would want to offer myself to do any more exams. Eugh.

You on the other hand, hat, sound like you will benefit hugely from qualifying. In which case it is definitely worth it!

Oh and welcome smile!

peachLFDTsmuggler · 29/11/2011 23:31

Happy anniversary monkey!

Welcome smile. Planning a race is a great way to staymotivated in winter! If you do, stick it on our list and join in!

I have asked (not so) secret santa for a subscription to Runner's World. Geek Smile

hope all progressing nicely in the Rhet household.

stickyLFDTfingers · 29/11/2011 23:34

But feels sorry for badger and her jaw.

rhetorician · 30/11/2011 08:28

I almost did law...that doesn't count, really, does it?

well, nothing doing here - a full day of on/off contractions which faded away; so at least we got another night's sleep in. I am sure she will be here in the next couple of days. Poor DP very fed up now with this odd in between state. I was just grateful for the zzzz

Might manage a short run later on

ibbydibby · 30/11/2011 08:42

Aww Rhet how frustrating. Must admit that my first sensible thought this morning was wondering whether baby Rhet had arrived. Good that you got sleep though. Hope you get a run in some time today. I don't think I was the slow dilator(?!) you referred to earlier - I woke at midnight with shooting pains right at the top of both legs, which were repeated at very regular 5 minute intervals. DS2 born 4.5 hours later.

Welcome smile Smile! Cross-country definitely counts! Can you tell me something though - why is cross-country only run in winter? Is it to do with the hardness of the ground? Or land being used for other things? Was pondering this with DH the other night. Actually it is something I fancy getting into, here there is a mid-week (Wednesday) league as well as weekend events. Can't do the Wednesdays as clashes with DCs things, and have not yet got to weekend one.

Sorry about your jaw Badger

fannybanjo · 30/11/2011 08:56

Well I was a flaming air hostess so stick that in your pipes and smoke it. Wink. However was a Private Client and Property PA for many years and fucking hate working in Solicitors offices. Just not me. Couldn't talk as had headphones on all day and ended up turning my bosses demented. Literally.

Welcome to newbies!

Debi I have two half Marathon's lined up, one in January and other in March. I've been so busy with getting house sorted for Christmas tree being erected Grin that rubbing ain't been on my mind. Will probably go to running club tonight for first time, gets me out of the house at bedtime!

rhet grrrrrr I really though DD2 would have arrived. Hope DP ok and not too fed up.

Moshi hope DH went ok. Must be sad.

monkey how's things with DS and the boys in school?

Quick clean around then taking DD1 and friend to cinema. DD2 and DD3 in preschool today so nice to have DD1 on my own. I say that with tongue firmly lodged in my cheek as she is hard bloody work.

Got new sofas and rug yesterday and Hyacinth Bucket (i.e. moi) is currently plumping cushions like a maniac. Bastard cats are having a field day trying to scratch it. Pity the fool who comes near them, they'll be launched out the French doors.

rhetorician · 30/11/2011 09:25

DP is fine, thanks, but in a Very Bad Mood!! I'm going to work...

MoshiMoshi · 30/11/2011 09:37

Escape! Escape, rhet! Grin

V odd with no DH around. House is generally as I leave it (hohoho!) Wink

DD2's 5th birthday party today. That combined with persisent cough (mine) I have decided not to run today and to Get Things Done, instead. Party on, dudes.

Anyone else had a Garmin-with-a-blank-screen? Was going to post splits of HM on here (Moshi you missed a fab HM) but after trying to connect it to PC the screen went blank.

Have googled, and seems a common (ish) prob which some have solved by pressing some buttons. No joy here so far though.....Sad. It's a Forerunner 110 - only 2 months old. Sad

Right better get dressed..Blush

MoshiMoshi · 30/11/2011 10:52

You did so well, ibby! Was it very windy or just a bit breezy? I heard some complaints about the conditions and wondered whether it would have had an adverse effect on times. I had a peek at the results and was a bit disappointed not to have run it as I am fairly sure I could have managed a 3rd there which would have earned me my first cash prize!

OP posts:
sfxmum · 30/11/2011 10:53

no baby, rhet best wishes to DP nearly there

wave to smile

ibbydibby · 30/11/2011 10:56

Thanks Moshi it was soooooooo windy. DH thinks he could have knocked maybe a minute off his time (he did 1.43 ish), I'm just not sure. Many of us at running club on Monday evening were wondering what we could have done in less windy conditions - us runners are never satisfied!!!

Wind was strongest going through showground, and out down a country lane, where there was very little shelter. Once you had turned out of it was much better and a bit more sheltered too. Loads of people spectating and felt very sorry for them - they must have been frozen!

Once official photos are up, I may add a link. (some are up, but none of me so far)

fannybanjo · 30/11/2011 11:20

moshi not sure what results I was looking at the other day but when I saw the fastest woman, you'd have won it. It was a good HM too. Funny what pops in to your re people on this thread.

rhet run, run, RUN like the wind away from the contracting DP! Us women are nightmares at this stage.

I'm taking a friend's 12 year old son with me to do some hill training later.... Blush. He is big into cross country and was top in Primary School but now he's in high school, he's noticed he ain't the fastest anymore. He did a cross country race recently with hills and he struggled. His mum not into running so I offered to take him. He's turned down going out for tea tonight to come with me. A committed lad, I like it! I'm going to do 0.5 mile warm up, 3 hill repeats then cool down. Get him used to it. Coach Fanny. Poor kid hey?!

orangeLFDThead · 30/11/2011 12:04

Only half caught up,which catch up later.
Welcome smile.
Ange I always find the treadmill really tough, can't run on it for half as long as on the road.
Badger do you grind at night? If so might be worth asking your dentist for a soft night bite guard, will provide some cushioning for your jaw when grinding.

rhetorician · 30/11/2011 12:32

welcome smile

fanny good of you - get him to do some research/reading on running. Tell him to join a club if he's serious

am wondering if I can fit in 10k between end of work and picking up dd, instead of my normal 4 miles on a weds...is that very bad of me?

fannybanjo · 30/11/2011 12:40

rhet he's in Harriers but I think sometimes it's just not enough. They need training outside it too. That's where the parents step in but if you're clueless I suppose you wouldn't know where to start.

fannybanjo · 30/11/2011 12:40

No rhet jam in as much as you can when you can - why would that be wrong?
