Ooo Moshi, I might email them and lure them with tales of a run around an polluted exotic city.

Sorry to hear about your arm fanny. Sounds miserable, poor you. Here have a kitkat.

I can't keep up with everybody I do apologise, I'm too rubbish at remembering who posted what and when, you are all so very good at that, how do you do it??

Rhet, yes the Safaricom race was my mine. Imagine being the last one in at 7hrs Grin

I'm was too tired to go out tonight, in between my dayjob and childcare I help run a tiny NGO and once a year we put on a huge family event to raise money for our clinics. It's great fun, but quite a lot of admin. It's this weekend so hopefully it won't rain and lots of laughs will be had. Next week I can run a bit more....

Doesn't anyone else find it difficult to go out after work?

futurity · 07/09/2011 18:26

I read as free Kit Kat! I think I am obsessed with chocolate....

DrNortherner · 07/09/2011 19:04

I read it as free Kit Kat too! I have entered Moshi Though not sure I love the Ayami stuff......some of it is a bit questionable I feel. I prefer the traditional it.

fanny I am in Harrogate, about 90 mins from GNR, I have a spare room if you want to bunk down here? My SIL is doing it too - she will be travelling there and back from harrogate.

orangehead · 07/09/2011 19:10

fanny Im not joined to the gym and it just £2.50 every time I go, which is hardly ever. I only use it when icy, hayfever really bad that sort of thing. So it not bad really, just so boring.
I suppose it a bit too late to enter Asics thing as race on saturday, would of done it therwise

squix · 07/09/2011 21:57

Ohh -I'm finding it really hard to catch up on here...I am running - honest! the weekend was a decent 9 miler - it was supposed to be a LSR but I managed a few miles at less than 10 mins per mile which I was chuffed about. My LSR speeds are quicker now than they were at 6 weeks before my 1/2 marathon so I may reach my speed target in the GSR afterall. Did 4 miles steady yesterday and felt really stiff all day - my hamstrings were really sore, so rest day today. Intervals planned for the morning.

Themasterandmargaritas - I don't run after work - I am usually too tired and I don't want to go whilst DD is still up (the few times I have done it full time working mum guilt kicked in big time) then by the time she's asleep I am pooped! So I end up going out early in the morning instead. Hope the weather holds up for your event at the weekend.

Moshi - thanks for the link - I've been looking for something like that - I have only ever seen then in the catalogue things you get with the sunday papers and never got round to ordering them - mind you I must be old because I look at all the other things in there and think they look really cosy/warm/practical/comfortable.

sfx - I started a business 6 years ago, we have just expanded and now employ 6 people, I am sooooo glad I did it. I did it with a business partner and have learnt so much. The wobbles have never really gone away - they just change and I just get used to being on a permanent wobble. I am not of the mind that I would never go back into permanent employment but it's working well for now. Good luck!

fanny - hope your arm improves for GSR.

bonkers20 · 07/09/2011 22:05

Moshi I just sent my details! I'm feeling lucky!

I generally a RonHill gal so it would be nice to try another brand.

hello all; home again now, and ankles and knees feeling creaky - lack of sleep and too much wine!

DP definitely has mild SPD which will make the coming 12 weeks a bit of a challenge - at most she can only do either drop off or pick up with DD as it is a 2 mile walk there and back...

didn't run today which felt most odd given my streak, but a bit like squix I've been gone for nearly 3 days and thought it was more important to spend some time with DD, esp as once term begins on Monday I'll be seeing a lot less of her :(

should manage to get to the gym tomorrow and out on Friday. Weather foul.

Lots going on on the 2nd October! Good to see the list looking so busy. Wonder how many of us will be adding the London Marathon on soon (think the ballot results come out first week in October? Can't remember?)

N4NNY · 07/09/2011 22:59

Went to running club tonight and seemed ok only coughed when I tried talking and running so hopefully 3 more days recovery and I'll be fighting fit for Sunday. Shame the weather forecast is so bad

DebiTheScot · 07/09/2011 22:59

Struggling to keep up after just 1 day back at work.
Yesterday I took both dc to do the supermarket shop after school so that I could run in the evening in the wind and the rain instead of doing the shopping (well it had stopped raining by then). That must make me a real runner surely?

Planning a cycle and a run tomorrow. That might be optimistic with a day at work too but I'll try.

Excited about book coming!

DebiTheScot · 07/09/2011 22:59

I'm entering one on the 2nd Oct too! Need to do that actually.

ibbydibby · 08/09/2011 00:36

Thanks for birthday greetings for yesterday. A day of pampering yesterday has been replaced by a day of work today - working this late is not my usual style but had a deadline of 7th Sep - which I missed by about 15 minutes! DCs back at school today, DS1 (Y10) particularly & uncharacteristically keen to talk about his day so feeling quilty about not giving him as much time as I could.

Sorry about DP, Rhet and hope you are feeling less creaky tomorrow.

Has been dry here today and would have been good for a run, but it didn't happen. Am also planning to do a race on 2nd Oct - though have not yet signed up for it.

Glad that arm is a bit better Fanny

Gearing myself up for Garmin purchase, and hoping to find a bargain special offer one somewhere - will go for 110 as don't think I can justify a more advanced one (Dr No I saw that you had said on another thread that you have this one and is fine).

Um....think it is bedtime!

SonicMiddleAge · 08/09/2011 04:07

It?s funny reading about all of you getting your winter running strategies in place ? I?m currently figuring out what to do with summer. At the moment I do my long weekly run on the weekend, while the girls have their nap, so around 12 (i,.e proving the adage about mad dogs and Englishmen) but already last week it was ~27 when I got back, and it?s only going to get hotter. I could do first thing, but after all week working, I really like Saturday mornings in my dressing gown playing with the girls. In real summer even jogging into work will be a challenge ? by time I do crèche drop off it?s 8am, and frequently nearing 30degrees by then. Evenings are the obvious answer, but my excuse for that is that I don?t feel safe running around Kings Park after dark plus I hate trying to get to sleep when you?ve got the post run exercise buzz going on. (the real reason being I?m another one who doesn?t like going out and having to exercise last thing at night). It may all be a moot point at the moment anyway ? having some real knee problems, seeing a doc next week, who I expect will start with ?rest it a bit??

DH and I had our weekly work out session last night. How have I ended up married to a man who can skip better than I can?

bonkers20 · 08/09/2011 06:38

Sonic I've got an idea! Do you want to do a house swap for winter? Did you not think to check on your DH's skipping skills before you married him? You've only got yourself to blame.

On the theme of the seasons changing. One thing I love about the darker mornings is that I can go out for a run at maybe 7.30am or so and sometimes catch deer in the fields. There's some magical about turning a corner in a misty field and being met by a lone stag.

ibbydibby · 08/09/2011 08:17

Sonic could you get up earlier than the girls on a Saturday, run, shower, then roll around in your dressing gown? If your knee is ok, obviously!

Bonkers love the thought a stag in a misty field, I have only ever seen a deer once on a run, and that was a muntjac trotting across the road in broad daylight.

Up at 6.45am today after my late night stint last night - pretty tired, but hoping I will make it to running club tonight.

Happy running all....

rhetorician · 08/09/2011 08:21

quite often see deer on my runs - lovely on a misty morning. Wonder whether I should try and find a race on Oct 2 too. Am feeling quite liberated by the fact that my next outing is 6 weeks away - I think I will race less next year...

a cold winter is being predicted here, but I quite like the challenge - the main problem is icy streets, but usually ok when you get to the park

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 08/09/2011 11:35

I will be seeing some deer tomorrow as I visit my horse in Devon (no children!)

20M av 8:11m/m. Off for food and then taking DD3 swimming. Will try pop back later. Keep on keeping on!

June2009 · 08/09/2011 17:11

heya, back from (a fantastic) holiday, only managed one small 5k run there but did do 3 good workouts during dd's naptime.
Now she has chickenpox though so it is harder to find the time to run!

Got my t-shirt & chip through the post yesterday, very excited :D:D:D

Sooo, in need of a bit of advice, my HM is on Sun.25/09.
I usually do my long run on Sundays, do I do a long run the sunday before the race, 15k or so?
If not do I try and fit one in next week during the week? Or leave it as doing one this weekend and that's it until the race.??

I already worked out, based on previous long runs, when I want to take some gel (@ 9k and 15k).

Also, tapering questions:
The week leading up to my HM what do I do, is tapering just the week before?
I usually work out everyday basically, sometimes twice a day except tuesday which is totally off. So I'm thinking of seeing my personal trainer maybe only once that week and go running twice 5k?

Your input as always, much appreciated :D!!
I'll have to catch up with the thread tonight I think, internet connection on holiday was very patchy...

Themasterandmargaritas · 08/09/2011 17:32

Oooo how lovely to see a deer, it'd make a nice change from monkeys Smile. Sonic I'm gearing up for summer too. It's been (relatively) chilly here for the last month and I'm expecting it'll start to heat up here soon.

I'm struggling with the post work mummy guilt too. Also dd will get more proper homework this year and I'll have to help her out more. I can't go first thing in the morning because I leave for work at 6.30 Sad. So LSRs are really only possible at the weekends.

I meant to go out tonight but TOTM put paid to that. I shall run tomorrow/sat out of town, it's a lovely place and I'll run through herds of zebra, waterbuck and a giraffe or two. Smile

June2009 · 08/09/2011 17:53

rhet is your dp seeing a physio? I had spd during my pregnancy and it was the pits, started at 20wks and had me in tears walking up the stairs but he end of it.
Physio definitely helped, few exercises to do on the gym ball. Do your pelvic floor exercises LOTS, they helped masses. Keep your legs/knees close together, don't sit for more than 20 minutes at a time. surround yourself with pillows( 7 or 8, all shapes and sized...) for sleeping. When you turn round at night KEEP your knees together, the physic can show you how.
You probably don't want to hear this but I wouldn't recommend walking that 2 miles, it'll be agony later on. My spd was mild too.

June2009 · 08/09/2011 17:54

it should say "by the end of it" ...autocorrect bleh...

LittleChiefRunnyCustard · 08/09/2011 18:42

Yep - SPD is awful. I had it from 15ish weeks both pregnancies - disappeared as soon as DD was born but lingered for about a year after DS. The pain on turning over in bed was excruciating. Not to mention the inability to put my own knickers on without sitting down Blush

rhetorician · 08/09/2011 19:34

ok - thanks for the advice; revising the pick-up plans - I think I'll just tell DP to get a taxi - it's only a few afternoons that i can't race back from work (will be good for bike sprints!) in time

OP posts:
squix · 08/09/2011 20:13

June my 1/2 tapering went as follows:

  • 2weeks before
  • 8 miles slow - bit shorter than usual long run (Sunday)
  • 5 miles intervals
  • 4 miles steady
-3 miles recovery 1 week to go Sunday - 6 miles slow Tuesday 3 miles steady Wednesday 3 miles steady Nothing until the race on the Sunday.

There is an argument that there is no need to taper to much for a 1/2 and I know some folk find it really hard. I found it ok think it helped that I was busy the week before so not too much time to fret.

m&m - I love hearing about the animals you encounter on your runs. Smile. I was out sprinted by a squirrel this morning.

Did some efforts this morning and I have achey hamstrings again tonight. I made a point of stretching too - something to keep an eye on.
