fanny - I was using a Polar watch for time, and mapping on RunningAhead (basically based on Google maps) - it's not that far off, but about 0.5km over 10k, say, so enough to throw paces.

johnny - great stuff, on baby, doctorate and getting back to running so quickly after baby. I think you will find running a useful escape from the brainache that doctorates can be...great to get out and just do something physical. We will not let you slack off!

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 17/08/2011 21:29

Final question rhet I promise - what Garmin (bear in mind I'm no lotto winner) would be a good investment?!

babysaurus · 17/08/2011 21:30

Hello all, I am new and lurking...

Hamster by PF do you mean plantar fasciitis...? I think I may have that - it has been going on for a long time, sometimes worse than others - and it developed, I think, since I did my second triathlon.

Am now able to put myself on the list as not doing any marathons or similar (am also hoping to TTC soon after a MMC a few months ago, so signing up for stuff isn't a good idea) but am hoping reading this will get me motivated to start running regularly again. I got sick of running after the instense triathlon training and, while I walk LOADS, I haven't run much since. I am also wanting to get as fit as a can (while still enjoying my Wine!) with a view to TTCing.

EllieG · 17/08/2011 21:32

Um, can I join? Don't understand what I need to write on the list though....and is it just about garmin watch things, because I don't have one of those either...

Only started training a while ago and still very slow - aiming to do half marathon in November though at moment the longest I have run is 10 k.

welcome to babysaurus and ellieG - no, it's not really about Garmin wotsits at all, although you could be forgiven for thinking so given the way we've been going on...

Ellie I'd say you should be fine to go from 10k to half by November - are you using a training plan? If you've entered yourself for a race, cut and paste the list, add the date, name of race and your username and post...simple

babysaurus - there's several tri folks on here. Sorry about your mmc - miserable (we had one before DD1) and good luck with the ttc. We like thread babies!

fanny - don't know really, I have the 205 which does everything I need - it isn't a heart rate monitor (futurity has the 305 which does, I think) - it's a bit clunky.

OP posts:
babysaurus · 17/08/2011 21:48

Are there? Which are the tri folks...? Hellooooo?

Thanks for the welcome, and good to hear you lot like thread babies too (fingers crossed!)

Wiifitmama · 17/08/2011 21:51

Hi all. Adding myself to the list. I recently name changed but was on here as IlanaK before.

I am also soooooo excited! Just ordered a Garmin from amazon. I have wanted one for ages but tonight saw a brand new unopened one on the marketplace for way less than full price. It is the 405cx. I so hope i am not disappointed with it.

I was going to run tonight but chickened out as it was pouring with rain. I am interspersing running with lap swimming so am unlikely to run now before Friday.

Have done! I am following a sort of training schedule but I haven't got time to run as much as it says - I can only fit in 3 runs a week because of children/work/life getting in the way. I started last October doing the Couch to 5k and have just built up from there. Only doing about a 10 min mile, though when I started it was a 12 min mile, so have come on a bit. Is very heartening to see the improvements and to know that 5k was something that was out of reach at first, and now that's a fairly easy one.

Funnily enough, I was talking to a friend about the Garmin things today and whether I should get one - I bought a pedometer but it's a pain and very inaccurate. I am very slow and a bit overweight but would like to be able to track my progress properly.

What's the best garmin to get? THere's so many

orangehead · 17/08/2011 22:36

Thats a shame putthehamsterbackinitscage, but best to get your foot sorted although frustrating I bet. Hope it better soon.
futurity I count sometimes too when I am struggling, most of the time it works but occassionally makes me worse Confused
I just put ipod on shuffle I got all sorts on there. Listening to my heavy breating makes me feel more tired, so need to listen to music so I cant hear myself
I have not got a garmin either Themasterandmargaritas, but really want one after reading this thread. I was using nike plus on my ipod but it broke last month I was very upset, even sulked for a couple of days. I looked on net to see anyway it could be fixed, and find alot of people have had problems with it, so dont really want to replace it now
Oh thanks Jonny I will look into the great manchester run Smile
Sorry about the mc [babysaurus], I have had some in the past also. I am also ttc at the moment. I really want to carry on running when I do get pregnant but it also scares me a little, but I know it safe it carry on. I just get a little paranoid sometimes.

peachsmuggler · 17/08/2011 23:11

Goodness! The world's gone Garmin mad!!!

Loads of new folk here. Welcome, one and all!!! orange I think we met briefly on a ttc and running thread in March. Good luck with the ttc and well dine on the running!

babysaurus, sorry to hear about your miscarriage. Have had a couple and after last one at Xmas, I found the running really helped with my mental state and keeping me sane while ttc. Also received loads of support from the lively folks on this thread.

science, baby cooking nicely, am 27 weeks this Friday which am frankly amazed at. Lots of kicking aboot in yon tummy from DD2, which is just lovely. Flipping knackered however!

Sorry about the injury hamster, you'll get there!

Rhet, totally sympathise on the rubbish day. Best to get into bed and forget it ever happened. DD tipped bowl of soup on the floor yesterday (on purpose) and boiled egg and soldiers and she also drew on the walls. Sigh.

futurity · 17/08/2011 23:30

Blimey...I go out to the cinema for the first time in ages and this thread wizzies along so much in that short amount of time.

Rhet I count to 10 ..then count backwards to 0...then I count to 20 ...then backwards..and so on! Boring and anal but it helped me achieve my sub 1 hour 10k Smile

Are you really running 7 days a week did I see? How's that going? My training plan had me now on five and this is my first week of it ..2 down...3 to go!

snowybun · 17/08/2011 23:51

I have a problem after I run my ankle is very tender on the inside at the knobly bone part. I have not increased my runs by anything just run 4 miles 2/3 times a week. The last few nights (not ran since last week) I have been laid in bed and the same part of my ankle has shooting pains which I got to ease by putting an ankle support on. Help have made an appointment with my dr but can't get to see him until Tuesday next week.

SonicMiddleAge · 18/08/2011 02:41

Can?t believe how fast this thread keep growing ? not fair how you all do this while i'm asleep! Encyclogirl: to go back to your earlier question, I also rely on my ipod to go running with. My current running playlist has lots of maximo park, Kaiser chiefs, fatboy slim, duke spirit, the gossip, yeah yeah yeahs, white stripes, sons and daughters, the zutons, the specials and janes addiction.

I've got a garmin, but (this may get me kicked off the thread Smile ) don't use it that much - I tend to do the same loops (most of my runs are to and from work, and there's three different routes I can take) so i wore it once for each of those routes to get an accurante distance, and then figure out my time through the highly precise method of looking at the play time on my ipod... I do wear if on my longer sunday run through - am mainly interested in seeing the topo detail - how i did on the climbs vs flats etc.

DebiTheScot · 18/08/2011 09:27

Welcome to all the new people Smile

babysaurus I've done 2 triathlons and hope to do at least a couple more next year. Just sprint distance though and only pool ones as I have a bit of an open water fear (although I did manage a bit of sea swimming on holiday). Hoped to do 1 more this autumn but there's none near enough that are pool based and sensible distances and entry fee so doing to do a dusty on in the New Forest instead.

ellieg I hope to do a HM in March and I don't think I'll fit more than 3 runs a week in. Maybe 4 some weeks at a push. And I've only done up to 10k so far too. It looks doable though I think.

snonybun sorry can't be much help on the ankle issue but it does sound sore. Hopefully doc will help.

Morning! Here I am on the new thread - but are you allowed in without a garmin??

I've added the Blenheim Tri onto the end of the racelist.

Re running tracks (and I don't think I could admit this in real life), I am currently finding tunes such as Miley Cyrus "The Climb" are getting me through some hard runs.

I've officially started on my 10k training program now for my race in October. I started off looking at the Runners World one but I think it assumes you are a better runner than I am, so have printed off the BUPA beginner and intermediate plans and am going to go for a mixture of those. DP is also doing the same race and has very sweetly offered to run with me so as to encourage me round instead of going for his PB.

Also started using Runkeeper on my iPhone - it's quite good although I can see it isn't totally accurate when looking at the map afterwards.

johnny hello, I am very slow too (hence never mentioning any times here or what my average pace is ...), for me it's about getting fit post baby too and enjoying myself.

Oh and (I'll start work in a minute I promise!) babysaurus I am a tri-er - did Blenheim this year and entered again for next year. DP is triathlon obsessed - doing the Vitruvian at the start of september and aiming for an ironman next year. Just been considering how to pimp my bike to make it faster for racing

cestlavie · 18/08/2011 09:41

Wow, this thread had gone into Garmin overload...

I'm still trying to resist the temptation, partly because Runmeter is a reasonably passable alternative and partly because I fear a Garmin would make me even more stat obsessed and likely end up in me running into a lamppost whilst staring fixedly at my wrist...!

Good to hear all's going well with you peaches. 27 weeks already! Time flies, huh.

Know what you mean about the darker evenings and mornings science, despite my autumnal excitement. Perhaps I'm slightly freaky but I do like the chill and that little bit more solitude that you get as the leaves start to fall, especially in London when summer running sees the streets and parks jammed with people.

Hiya to everyone joining. You've definitely got plenty of time to get from 10K to HM distance EllieG - I actually much prefer HM distance to 10K as I can never figure out the right pacing for a 10K and always end up going too fast over the first half and wanting to die for most of the second half.

Also do the counting thing futurity and orange on LSRs. I try to count off the miles (i.e. up to 500) - not very exciting but works for me...

Sympathies for your morning yesterday rhet. Had a similarly joyous morning getting DS and DD out the door to respective holiday club and nursery this morning!

Rhet, I am most relieved to hear that a six months pregnant women isn't so effortlessly outrunning me! Although I've a strong suspicion you'd still comfortably outrun me, glad I'm not having to put that to the test...

Thanks for all the music recs. I'll make a list of them and go and download some. I need a beat to run to for sure. Faithless -Insomnia, Prodigy - Breathe, that sort of thing. I'll be fit, but deaf at the end of all of this.

I went out with my Garmin last night and ran 7 miles. Times were total rubbish, but I have to think that I only started in May. Averaged around 11.30 mins miles. I ran for nearly 1 hour 20 mins, which is actually the longest time I've ever ran in my entire life.

I'm about a stone overweight and I really felt like I was carrying a stone of spuds around with me. Made me resolve to do something about that. Hopefully the running will help, but I do have a tendency to overfuel somewhat.

Ellie you and I are at similiar stage, welcome!

Futurity very interested in your counting technique, I may have to try that too.

I have the Garmin 110 and have only used it once so far. Super easy to use, comes with a heart monitor thingy too. I already know I'm gonna be obsessed with it!

Just returned from a run outside and really enjoyed it. Working on the BUPA 10k plan so just done 2 lots of 15 mins running with 2 min walk in between and managed it well. I am going to cancel my gym membership as the thought of going back to a treadmill is horrible. I will save up the money instead to buy a garmin!
