OMG I am beyond excited this evening I have put my name down to go to Iceland in October with the parkrun team to take part in the first ever Iceland parkrun all I have to do is phone in the morning and pay and I can go.

rhetorician · 08/09/2011 20:34

wow Iceland (I take it you don't mean the discount supermarket :o) - always wanted to go there.

Am having some major work hassles - very complicated, but making my life difficult (not least because I am not entitled to any maternity/parental leave)...

Did a sweaty and hot 7k on the treadmill, aiming to beat my time - did, by about 3 minutes - and did about 10 minutes at the end at what I assume was threshold - it's good to get a feel for it at least. One day I might manage to keep it going for long enough to clock 5k (which I did today in 27:52)

but life has suddenly ramped up a gear - the next few months are going to be tough, I think, but I am determined to keep running. This week a deliberate step-down after a month of running every day

rhetorician · 08/09/2011 20:54

oh, a pair of trail shoes just arrived (at DD's bedtime, cue, 'ooh, it's a present, a present for me' Hmm), ASICS Lahar - they weren't massively expensive and I am nervous about changing from shoes that work (although back in the day I used to run in New Balance and I am a neutral runner). If they don't suit, they are Goretex so I can wear them on the bike...

OP posts:
ibbydibby · 08/09/2011 20:59

N4NNY how exciting - am very envious, how did you manage to get involved in that?

rhet sorry about your work hassles, have often wondered what it is you do?

Had a good training session with the club tonight, today has been mainly dull, but sun came out this evening and was lovely. On the down side, realised while I was driving home that I could smell something pooey - had trodden in dogs muck, so had to clean my trainer when I got home. Ugh.

Had a bit of hassle before going out to running club as DS2 (10yrs) came running indoors crying as he had been threatened by a boy carrying 2 hammers! Turns out the boy was Yr 3 and so aged 7 or 8. I went to speak to him and he ran away crying. I did try to speak calmly to him and point out that threatening people with hammers was not a good idea, but he was petrified of being told off by an adult. It worries me that children so young can run around and do things like this. Especially in a quiet village...

N4NNY · 08/09/2011 21:03

rhet lol no the country not the shop
ibby they advertised it on the weekly parkrun newsletter and I just said I was interested. Can't wait till after morning school run to hand over my money

rhetorician · 08/09/2011 21:05

oh, am an academic - which sounds better than it is! not a group of people renowned for being reasonable...

I hate dog muck with a passion - and we are in autumn leaves now, which is the very worst season at all. Had to clean some off the wheels of DD's toy buggy - I nearly heaved.

That sounds a bit extreme about the hammers, no wonder your DS was scared - it sounds very odd, doesn't it?

OP posts:
orangehead · 08/09/2011 21:09

Wow Iceland thats amazing N4NNY
Zebras, giraffes, monkeys sounds great the most excitement I get is an occassional sparrow.
Sorry about the chickenpox june how she better soon

orangehead · 08/09/2011 21:11

Shock ibbydibby thats bad. How is your ds now?

Wheelybug · 08/09/2011 21:22

Must be lovely seeing all sorts of wildlife - I'm the sparrow sort round here... Actually if I get up to Richmond Park there's usually some deer which is something quite special given you're in a huge city.

ibby - hope your ds is ok. Sounds scary.

Thanks for that link to the shoe grippy things Moshi. I have had a few attempts during snowy weather of trying to go out and heading back 3 minutes later. Think I will order DH a pair for a birthday pressie (shame we're not nearer the same size although then he'd only accuse me of buying them for me Grin).

Rhet hope the work hassles sort out, and DP doesn't suffer too much.

Squix - is it you racing me for peaches cake ? If itis, that should make sense... if its not ignore me Grin.

N4NNY - Iceland sounds amazing (will you need those shoe grippy things ... probably not yet?). How are feeling ? Ready for the race?

rhetorician · 08/09/2011 21:36

wheely I'm in that cake race, too, coming up on the inside...

OP posts:
N4NNY · 08/09/2011 21:37

wheelybug I've not looked into the practicalities of the trip too much yet I did look at the temp and if I remember right it's about 9?c in October. There's a trip to attempt to view the northern lights which I have always wanted to try and do. I'm bouncing with excitement.

As for my run I think I'll be ok health wise now I wish I'd run the whole amount more then once but not too worried.
My biggest worry now is the weather the forecast is bad and mum and dad are coming to watch I just feel bad knowing that they will be stood in rain for 3 or so hours

fannybanjo · 08/09/2011 21:37

Evening all! Hope all well in the running constabulary!

Sonic are you in Perth? If so, lucky devil! However running in heat - I collapse when it is 15 degrees hence love the winter, I'd be nooo good running anywhere south of the UK! Definite winter runner me, love the fresh crisp air.

Rhet sorry to hear DP suffering, it is hard to see someone struggle when they are pregnant, you just make sure you give that lady loads of TLC. Bet you are bit gutted your Zola Budd streak ended but bloody well done! Your times definitely better too, shows you what putting the mileage in does.

Wheely how is the wee leg?

Ibby I have the 110 too, purchased it last week, £100 from Amazon - absolutely frigging love it! My friend well impressed yesterday when we went out, she used her Runkeeper on Iphone alongside mine Garmin - Garmin had us down for doing 6.5 miles, Runkeeper had it at 5.4 miles Shock

Wrist still pissing me right off but 3 hours of ironing today has jolted it into life so it's a case of shut up about it now, I'm boring DH, DM, DF, DDs, Dear Friends, Dear John, Dear Mumsnetters....

I am considering entering Great Manchester Marathon on 29 April next year.... Should I? Should I? Hmm, am I ready? I know I could do it BUT I would want to do it in less than 4 hours, I will see how GNR goes time wise first I think.

fannybanjo · 08/09/2011 21:44

Oh yes, running! Tomorrow I have a plan to get up at 6am, my kit is at the bottom of my bed waiting and do 6 miler, I am DETERMINED I will get up but I am not an early morning person. May have to do LSR Saturday evening as DH out all day Sunday.

rhetorician · 08/09/2011 22:07

well fanny I was pleased I managed to do it for so long, actually, and now I have a target to beat for the next one....will see how it goes

times do seem better, especially now I have had a couple of rest days

OP posts:
futurity · 08/09/2011 22:18

Iceland! That's so cool! And there is us moaning about winter running Smile although as you say it won't be silly cold.

Did a speedy 4.5 miles tonight with just three of us from running club. The club organiser is off doing an ironman this weekend! Cannot imagine ever doing anything like that..is truly crazy!

squix · 08/09/2011 22:52

wheely - Smile yes that's me in the great cake race

Wheelybug · 08/09/2011 22:54

Yes but rhet you're disqualified due to having the wrong name Grin.

fanny - sounds like you're planning on making it to the GNR ! Hurrah ! The ankle is so much better thanks. Am going to get to the gym tomorrow and hope to go for 20 mins and then a 5K on sunday. Then fingers crossed, build on that next week and keep going. Am glad your wrist seems a little better...

futurity - I agree, ironman seems impossible.. Hardcore stuff.

June2009 · 08/09/2011 23:19

Thanks squix Was it you who really wasn't sure about the tapering while you were doing it?

Chicken pox sucks, no-one wants to come and play! dd has been bored and I'm knackered, it's been "one of those days" everyday this week. You know the one, when you've done playdough, drawing, tennis, fairy cakes and picking worms in the garden, AND IT'S STILL ONLY 10 AM!!!
Should be over by tomorrow, only a couple of spots to go...

So...long run on Sunday and then next week I could do:
Monday AM Personal Training, PM run 5k, fast.
Wed AM intervals
Thur AM PT, PM 1/2 hour class
Friday spin class
Saturday body combat class
Sunday long run 10k to 15k (last one before HM)

The week after (leading up to HM on the Sunday)
Mon AM PT, PM 5k run
Weds AM intervals,
Thur AM PT and PM class
Then nothing until the run. though I'm going to find it hard not to go to spin or combat and that's also 2 weeks without boxing which sucks. (usually do boxing wed. mornings and intervals saturday after combat.)

I'm quite looking forward to not "having to" do so much running in a way, keeping it to one 10k run a week with my mate, no pressure, would be nice for a while Grin. Till the next event. :D

I'm still undecided about a garmin, can't beleive the difference with runkeeper fanny, I use runkeeper all the time, never checked it against anything else! I quite like having a random american woman telling me how fast I am going along the way :D keeps me company. That and the music together make the battery run out too quick though.

better get some sleep soon, little terror gets up well early.

fanny hope youg et to do your run tomorrow, I LOVE early runs, clears my head and you carry on with your day and forget you went running, then remember you have and that's a lovely feeling Grin.

rhet I worry about new shoes too. Will get fitted in a proper running shop after this HM. Should have done it before but now it's too late, don't want to run it in new shoes.

SonicMiddleAge · 09/09/2011 02:42

Ibby ? I could, but they generally get up at 5am in summer... We have blackout curtains, but the parrots still wake up early, so so do we...
Bonkers ? no thanks, I?m not swapping our summer for your winter. If it comes to it I?ll just drop running for the hot months and go swimming instead. (insert it?s a hard life emoticon).
Rhet ? does your DP cycle? Would be an easier way to cover the 2miles? Also, I still think you need a baby jogger to keep up the exercise after the baby comes ? dd1 loved going for rides in it when she was your dd?s age. DH used to use it to take her out when I needed some peace to feed the baby etc. He said it was really good for his aerobic capacity having to run pushing the buggy uphill and sing heads shoulders knees and toes at the same time.

M&M: very jealous of seeing zebras while running.

stickylittlefingers · 09/09/2011 10:17

have been having a quick skim - the computer stopped working (not sure if it working now is just a blip, so Ill enjoy it while I can). fanny are you sorted out for the GNR now? And how the hell do you iron for 3 hours? I'm guessing your family looks a bit smarter than mine Grin

Sonic I'm sure it's no fun for you, but the thought of being woken up early by parrots is so wonderfully exotic (not a lot of parrot noise in Co Durham). I'm not sure how parrots v. zebras fare in exotic animal top trumps, but it's all sounding good to me.

June2009 what a timetable! I'm pretty Envy actually. I should get off my fat arse and do a few other things apart from running, you've inspired me.

I've only done bits and bobs since the weekend. I've been having a funny thing with a racing heart (not while running, just about the house etc) so I've been taking it easy. Not sure if it's still that horrible cold in my system or what. So there was the recovery run on Tuesday and a 6k yesterday, but it's not very satisfying. Will probably amble down to the parkrun tomorrow.

Does anyone have tips of where to get cheap running kit? Just basics (shorts particularly). I had a nasty experience using the wrong sort of shorts...

encyclogirl · 09/09/2011 10:47

Oh God skimming like a champ here. Massively busy work day. Stupid work interfereing with my running chatting.

N4NNY I am SO jealous. I would love to go to Iceland. Dh and I are planning to do a volcano walk there next year. (If we can off load the dc to my sis that is...). Enjoy, enjoy!

Rhet, that sucks about the leave sitch. Will you be able to sort it? Yep, your life is about to get interesting really soon!

June2009, your timetable is very impressive. It's all I can do to run every other day...

Speaking of which I got 6 miles done last night. Finding that distance extremely manageable now. Will get out for 8 tomrrow, am away for the weekend so I need to figure out when and where..

Is anyone following David Walliams swimming the Thames? Talk about an inspiration.

futurity · 09/09/2011 10:51

I was listening to Chris Moyles this morning and he read out a new total for David Walliams swim...it was about £450K! That is great and must really keep him going..how on earth he can do it when (apparently) he is barely taking in any food due to tummy cramps.

encyclogirl · 09/09/2011 11:14

Part fish that boy. Has to be.

sfxmum · 09/09/2011 11:34

hello I swallowed a fly on Wed while running, have since endured mine jokes about old women and assorted animal, the cheek of them calling me old!

N4NNY Iceland how lovely, dd has a boy in her class from Iceland, both parents run, he was apparently her boyfriendHmm he told her that after getting married they would leave the parents and start another family, she wasn't that keen on that bit, and then he moved back to IcelandGrin

Wheely hope leg continues getting better, I saw a few dear on Sunday near Robin Hood Gate crossing the road, I love when they make the traffic stop

moshi cheers for the shoe grip link, anything that saves me landing on my arse. enjoy the horse today

Ibbi a hammer? did you have a word with the parents?

Rhet sorry about DP's SPD I hope she gets help soon, will surely make a difference for delivery

Master is the NGO the one you linked to last year? I hope the fundraising goes well

June glad you had a good holiday

Fanny Ironing should be avoided at all cost and mostly delegated whenever possible. Are you sure you don't want me to talk to mates re GNR? they are the sort who they mind being 'bothered'

sorry I missed people hope you are all well

feeling slightly under the weather but only a vague sluggishness, did some intervals over 3 miles meh
preparing for demo on Tuesday, taking dd, nothing to do with running as such

cake what is this cake race of which you speak?

sfxmum · 09/09/2011 11:35

I might have seen a few dears but I meant DEER
