Go on Rhet you can do it!

I can't keep up..how many people are doing the GNR? I saw an advert on tv for it earlier..I get so excited about these things on television and could sit and watch the whole thing given half the chance :)

Legs are still aching a bit after Cambridge run the other day but have running club tonight so better get myself together. Been out on my road bike for the first time in weeks yesterday and today..only for a tiny 6 miles each time but enough to remind me how fun it is! Was hard enough fitting in running over the summer holidays and the bike just took back seat. I'm keen to keep it up but have never done cold weather cycling before (light weight!). I have a long sleeved top but I assume I need some sort of cycling tights with padding (ie can't get away with my running winter tights?!)

fannybanjo · 15/09/2011 14:44

bonkers hope your knee okay. Giant Chocolate buttons are my guilty pleasure. Bloody gorgeous.

Rhet I'd have been fuming too at inconsiderate drivers. It isn't too bad around here as quite rural but as soon as I run into a built up area, it is like I have stepped into New York! Hope you managed a run.

Sticky I am getting VERY excited! Don't mind a bit of drizzle but don't want my hair to go frizzy.... Wink I am not sure on my race kit yet as could do with a new sports bra. Definitely wearing my usual Nike running leggings as not comfy in shorts one iota. Are you running with friends?

I have posted a pic on my profile of my Darling Daughter Number Two with her boots on at the Zoo Grin Shock and another one taken before with her normal Clarks shoes on just to prove I ain't that type of Mother!

peachsmuggler · 15/09/2011 16:08

Get on that treadmill Rhet!!!!!

Bonkers, burn the sports bra, the normal obviously makes you go faster!!! Couple of years ago I took DD to swimming lesson and had forgotten bottom half of tankini set. I wore my pants and then went home commando Blush

Futurity, am not much of a cyclist, but my friends who are have that padded bum thing going on. Must be summat in it!

Wheely, pre-school went ok despite DD saying this morning she couldn't go as she had a spot (she is 3, not 13!!) and then shouting that she wasn't going to go. I stayed for 45 mins and the nursery workers were saying they though she was very confident for a child who had never been to nursery before. I then said I was going to the shops and would be back to get her, she was screaming when I left but they called me to say she had settled down very quickly. She was fine when I collected her. The playgroup leader said "She's quite a character". Am wondering if this is a euphemism for stroppy!!!! Anyway, let's see how it goes tomorrow. How did your DD2's second day go?

Wheelybug · 15/09/2011 16:24

Sounds like it went pretty well peach - is she back in tomorrow? It was fine here - she bounded in then when I saidgoodbye she started crying but only noise and by the time I got to the door of the room she'd stopped. I'd take 'being a character as a compliment, even if it did mean stroppy. You can go a long way with character.

futurity I am not much of a cyclist either but I have invested in some cheap padded trousers and they do really make a difference. I have arranged a cycle with a friend who is a cyclist for next week - eek!

futurity · 15/09/2011 16:53

I've got padded shorts and they are great..just not sure if they do padded tights for cold weather? Must do I suppose ? I'm new to all the bike stuff!

peachsmuggler · 15/09/2011 16:57

Yes she is Wheely. am guessing I will try to leave earlier tomorrow, probably straight away. Glad your DD2 was ok today. We have swimming lesson tomorrow afternoon, and she has been having trouble settling in new class there, but was better last week so hope she is ok tomorrow. She's going to be shattered, poor wee thing!

June2009 · 15/09/2011 17:59

come on rhet you'll feel so much better for it, and it'll guarantee you a good night's sleep.

I'm going for a quick run now on the treadmill. take care!

stickylittlefingers · 15/09/2011 18:06

Bonkers good to hear you did the run and quickly too! It is a bit mad, the GNR, with so many people at it from all over. The first time I did it was just because there was a lottery for places at work, and I got one :) (not normally lucky!) - then I did the book your place for the next 3 years thing - so I keep on doing it... it is lucky that it's just up the road. I've never travelled for a run (apart from staying with Mum and Dad to do things in NYorks). I might for a special marathon though...

rhet hope you're out there running (or in there running, I suppose). You'll sleep better for it, I hope.

Peach I got a little window into how DD1 is at school when her Yr1 teacher looked thoughtful and said "if I had a little girl, I'd want her to be feisty"... I'm OK with feisty! Much better that your DD is a character than didn't have one. Boring's not good.

Talking of little characters Fanny pictures of those boots will have to be got out at a certain your lady's 18th birthday party... one day she'll be mortified Grin.

One more run til the real thing Grin. And today it's plum streusel cake. Excitement seems to breed long posts and lots of baking...

stickylittlefingers · 15/09/2011 18:11

(young not your, eejit) - Fanny, to answer your question (total lunatic this afternoon), I've friends running it, but never have tried to run with anyone. I hardly ever run with anyone, even on training runs. I did run with my little brother a few weeks back and we ran so slowly (chatting nineteen to the dozen!) - despite the fact he can run a lot faster than me (he did the GNR in 1hr thirty something last year, so a lot faster).

Are you coming over on your own or with all the Banjo family?

stickylittlefingers · 15/09/2011 18:22

N4NNY was just looking at the Iceland trip in the parkrun newsletter. It looks amazing! Am very Envy - you will have to give a detailed report on that one... do hope you get to see the northern lights!

orangehead · 15/09/2011 19:28

Glad it went ok today peachs and wheely, its upsetting when they cry but they usually fine as soon as you leave. It' all of our benefit the crying.
Found another local 10k run in December, so if nothing has happened on the baby front by then and there is still places Im going to do. That way if still nothing happened there is something to look forward to. There is a 3k fun run at same place, so might see if the kids what to do that

sfxmum · 15/09/2011 20:38

you gobby lot am lost again

ibbydibby · 15/09/2011 20:57

Oh Fanny. I. have. seen. the. boots...what can I say?! Your dds look gorgeous in the pictures. I love that dress on your first pic.

Bonkers I remember now, you went to Notre Dame didn't you (was it you who said that when we were discussing Norwich HM?) I moved away from Norfolk in my early twenties, and only moved back a few years ago. Think I have severely scuppered my chances job/career wise as not much going here. Miss my London pals too.

N4NNY and sticky, yes I have been looking at Iceland trip on parkrun newsletter too, would love to go but DS1 is proving very costly at the moment.

Rhet hope you did the treadmill.

Futurity while you are pondering padded trousers/tights, have you considered wearing your padded shorts either over or under some normal trousers/tights. I have done this with Ronhill tracksters.

A tedious day for me. Went to London for "essential" meeting, 8.30am train cancelled due to earlier broken down train, staff did not know if 9am service would go...so decided to go via Cambridge (longer). Arrived at essential meeting half an hour late. Journey home similar, plus added stress of leaving jacket on train, so had to get back on to retrieve it. As I did not get home until 5.30, decided to give running club a miss, sadly. Just no time to refuel/rehydrate!

MoshiMoshi · 15/09/2011 21:04

!

June2009 · 15/09/2011 21:16

rhet hope you managed to get a run in after what sounds like a stressfull day.
I did a little run on the treadmill before class, slow 20 minutes only to ease me back into running after a break, very much enjoyed it and really looking forward to this HM in less than two weeks now but also wish I could have kept up my HM training plan better the last three weeks. Oh well, shit happens, trainer reckons there is no point in trying to fit in lots of runs now and just stick with my plan.

Do you guys have last minute advice for a half marathon? I've heard some people put vaseline on some body parts sometimes to prevent chaffing for marathons, I've run up to 18k and not experienced anything like that.
I've just got my bottle, my shorts, the belt (which is most definitely NOT a bum bag Grin) to put my phone in, my keys and some lucozade gel, my race t-shirt, the chip....hopefully it won't be sunny and I won't need my sunglasses as I hate running with anything on me (like jewellery etc).
What do you guys bring to eat for after the race? Also there are no showers there I don't think.

Right, duty calls, dd wants me to put her to bed (and it's past 9pm, what happened to falling asleep at 7:30 pm???)

ibbydibby · 15/09/2011 21:44

June my personal preference is to carry as little as possible - so would not carry a drink but rely on the drinks stations around the course. Though if you are used to carrying a bottle then that should be fine. Likewise I would not carry "keys" but a single key at most - eg my car key if I have gone by car, or a single house key. I wouldn't take a phone either, would prob put that in the luggage (if you are able to leave luggage anywhere). Then again my phone is nothing special and was £30, if it was something dearer maybe I would take it with me!

I usually take sandwiches for afters and maybe something chocolatey though you often get something foody given to you afterwards anyway. Crisps are yummy to scoff after running!

I have never worried about showers after a race. Just make sure you have a top to put on/change into afterwards.

Not sure this advice is very useful though!

MoshiMoshi · 15/09/2011 21:46

june - also pins for number. If no showers, baby wipes are really useful to freshen up sweaty limbs. Do not rely on goody bag for post-race food and bring what you like eg banana, bagel, cereal bar etc. Plus bottle of Lucozade type thing for afterwards. And, comfy shoes! If too cold for flip flops (ahhhh! lovely after racing in trainers) something similarly soft and cushioned (Ugg boots maybe?)

DebiTheScot · 15/09/2011 21:53

Glad I went out last night as had a parents meeting at ds1's school tonight and have just remembered I have to make a christening cake tomorrow night so might not get out for a run (will try and fit a wee one in after work). Otherwise with Parkrun on Sat it'll only be 2 runs this week.
have finally posted the entry forms for 2 races so will find the list and add them.

I'm getting excited by GNR too now! Is it live on telly?

bonkers20 · 15/09/2011 22:18

When I ran the GNR they had you line up in your pen for a good while before the race. If it's chilly then you'll either need to take clothes you don't mind dumping and losing at the start or take a bin bag to rip off and leave. I did the latter.

Also there are buses to take you back to the start, but of course they get busy so if you need to get back you won't be able to hang around at the end for too long.

N4NNY · 15/09/2011 22:29

ibbysticky I got all excited again when I read the parkrun newsletter about Iceland now my HM is out of the way I can do more research about what I'm going to do in my free time. I really hope the northern light are in our favour I really want to see them. Just hope the other people are friendly and that I don't make to much of a tit of myself at park run. I WILL come last cos I nearly always do lol.

peachsmuggler · 15/09/2011 22:36

June, old hoody or similar than you can disguard at the start of the race is a good idea as can get quite cold waiting around to start. After, I felt quite queasy and faint and didn't feel right till I got into town and had a snickers, so a chocolate bar might be a good thing to have to eat. If chafing hasn't bothered you till now then I wouldn't worry bout Vaseline.

Told DP about the comment about DD being "a character" and he said "oh dear, that means she was naughty eh?"

backwardpossom · 15/09/2011 22:48

I wore a bin liner at the start of my half marathon to keep warm...

rhetorician · 15/09/2011 23:55

new thread complete with typo in title and missing race list...it's late, I'm knackered, someone had to step up...

OP posts:
Pawsnclaws · 16/09/2011 21:44

Good luck to all racers this weekend! Will be watching out for my friend doing the GNR. Have a good race all of you.

Marathon prep going badly wrong this week. I have a stinking cold and have missed my 10 mile run on Thursday, plus the weekends 14 miler looks very doubtful.
