Brexit MegaThread - part 14

Thread 13. We had a debate about whether there should be a new one but if no one answers this the whole series after 8 years plus will come to their end.

Brexit happened, although one time Leavers do not seem to appreciate this.
It's worth noting I think that Brexit was a Tory initiative and the Tory party has just received its worse electoral thrashing since 1832. Could it be entirely unrelated?

What next? A gradual rapprochement with the EU? A Norway style agreement?

That's not what Duncintoffees question said.
If you want me to answer yours I'm happy to.

It wasn't really my question, you wanted to discuss what might happen in the future.

What will be disastrous?

LouiseCollins28 · 17/08/2024 23:06

Tying ourselves back into a low growth, debt ridden EU, at the expense of relationships with more dynamic economies.

Getting back in hock with an organisation where we were a net financial contributor, not a beneficiary.

Increased exposure to financial contagion from the Eurozone the closer the ties we make.

Losing more control over our foreign policy at at time when it's already disastrous, e.g. the U.K. govt is now allowing U.K. made military equipment to be used in a shooting war with Russians, including on Russian soil. How long might it be before 'tough guy' Starmer wants to send our troops there too? I'm sorry to say this but, in addition to his many other failings, Starmer is a warmonger.

Loss of any remaining confidence from people that anything they say/vote for with regards the EU makes any difference. I mean if we're back in in a few years confidence and trust in our institutions will be gone.

HannibalHeyes · 17/08/2024 23:18

That's what you want to happen?

DuncinToffee · 17/08/2024 23:25

Seriously?

LouiseCollins28 · 17/08/2024 23:57

HannibalHeyes · 17/08/2024 23:18

That's what you want to happen?

No, that's what I suggest will be disastrous.

I've concluded you are just a waste of time now. You're clearly not interested in a conversation. You're just constantly taking my answers to one question and claiming they are answering a different question.

HannibalHeyes · 18/08/2024 00:01

Irony...

LouiseCollins28 · 18/08/2024 00:04

DuncinToffee · 17/08/2024 23:25

Seriously?

What was in any way unserious about what I wrote?

Lost trade opportunities, more exposure to bad debts, renewed war in Europe and a total loss of public confidence in the people they elect to serve them. Yes, I think those things are serious. If you don't, then you do you.

These are all consequences of your precious Brexshit! WTF are you on about?!

DuncinToffee · 18/08/2024 00:12

Lost trade deals? Which trade deals have we gained with Brexit?

War in Europe, would you prefer to give Putin what he wants?

Loss of confidence after Brexiteers lied about Brexit, oven ready deal remember?

LouiseCollins28 · 18/08/2024 00:55

What do I want to happen? OK then, since you asked, what do I want to happen.

I'll largely confine this to Brexit and it's closely related consquences but there may be some other things that creep in.

Laws:
All remaining EU derived law (if any) to be removed from UK statute
New law to force the FA to reintroduce the "three foreigners" rule to domestic football competitions.

Trade
A new UK-US trade deal if Donald Trump wins the Presidency in November
A new UK-India trade deal
Other new trade deals to be negotiated.

Money:
The entire UK "International Development" budget, apart from the European Development Fund which we've committed to pay into under the TCA, should clawed back and be spent instead regenerating deprived areas of the UK. That would mean that only "International Aid" spending the UK government would be making would be going to the EU.

Borders
New action to stop the boats using UK Border Force and Royal Navy people
Cease passenger rail services via the Channel Tunnel
'Flag carriers' only on international air travel routes to and from EU destinations - i.e. no more budget airlines on those routes.

Other
A U.K. equivalent of the French "Gendarmerie" i.e. armed Police, to be recruited and deployed on the streets of every major town and city in Britain, around the clock.
Clacton to be declared the new capital of the UK 😉subject to approval in a referendum (of people living in Clacton) 😁

Very interesting analysis in the Economist about racism in UK politics
from Mosely to Powell to te National Front to the EDL to Yaxley Lennon
pointing out that the percentage share of vote / opinion poll
remains remarkably static
and can / should be largely ignored.

By the way have you all seen what happened to Liz Truss in Beccles
https://x.com/ByDonkeys/status/1823481596185616717

If I were Liz Truss, a bright green dress is the last thing I'd consider wearing...

Jason118 · 18/08/2024 04:41

Louise has a really weird list.

Peregrina · 18/08/2024 08:50

All remaining EU derived law (if any) to be removed from UK statute

Including those first proposed by the UK?

How about turning your back on all laws derived from international bodies?
Or is it only the EU that bothers you? Slavishly following US laws would be OK would it?

At times I get the impression that some Brexiters would love to be able to tow the UK west to be off the coast of the US. Others want to turn the clock back and look towards the white Commonwealth - they don't give two hoots about those Commonwealth countries whose citizens have black skins.

Why ever did we appease the Brexiters. They weren't satisfied when we were in the EU. They aren't satisfied now. Will anything satisfy them?

Louise is going to build a wall and delete the letters E and U

Nice try tbough.

SerendipityJane · 18/08/2024 09:45

The EU has laws against murder and theft. They'll have to go too. We can't be "all Frenchified" can we ?

FrankieStein403 · 18/08/2024 18:07

That's just a wind up from Louise, no way would that list be sane.

Talkinpeace · 18/08/2024 19:05

Does Louise realise that any UK / India trade deal is predicated on 1m visas for Indians to the UK
its their absolute red line

Dane-geld etc. But bullies are cowards. We know this. Cameron was much happier bullying the weak, the poor, the ill and vulnerable than risking standing up to the shit gang that was "the Brexiteers". Even my Nan could have had them. And she's dead.

HannibalHeyes · 18/08/2024 19:13

"A post-Brexit border control system has caused a string of errors with businesses mistakenly charged for goods checks that never took place"

All this time and it's still chaos...

And that any trade deal with the US will likely be contingent on the slicing and dicing of the NHS for American profit?Hmm

DrBlackbird · 18/08/2024 23:46

Not to mention that no EU law is to be allowed but somehow regulatory alignment with the US land of chlorinated chicken and hormone filled beef is allowed? I thought Louise was for stronger environmental regs and animal hygiene? Not going to happen with US FTA…

GlobeTrotter2000 · 19/08/2024 04:46

@LouiseCollins28 I'm sure you wanted the govt to say "you've got it wrong Britain, we'll Remain anyway" or use some get out about "advisory" to avoid implementing a result you didn't like, but they didn't. Well Parliament did, they screwed arounf for 4 years, trying to come up with a ruse to overrule the result but eventually admitted defeat.

Exactly. Also, not to be forgotten, is that the electorate were presented with the opportunity to remain by the LibDems and a second referendum by Labour in the 2019 general election. Neither option was selected.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 19/08/2024 04:51

@DuncinToffee Well according to JRM in about 45 years time we will finally see some benefits

Incorrect quote. JRM said it could take 50 years for the UK to see the full benefits of leaving the EU.
