Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

And today in "there's no need to worry about gas supplies" news...

Mine was Utility Point and have been transferred over to EDF. This so called free energy market was nonsense. I had the time and inclination to switch every year and use comparison sites to save a lot of dosh. Less tech-savvy pensioners and working folk didn't so end up getting shafted. The actual energy suppliers are much fewer than the resellers and have to invest in all sorts of infrastructure and systems whereas these spivs pimped off the majority to create an illusion of competition.

Thank you, @vera99.

To be fair, Hannibal, the companies mentioned are merely billing companies. Fortunately they are not responsible for supply to premises.

It's still a scary time if you are with one of them.

Small businesses are not protected by the OFGEM price cap so this could be yet another post-covid shock to impact them. Some are seeing their prices tripling. At one time the Conservatives were seen as the party of business and good governance but that ship has long since sailed.

Westministenders went to how many threads over the last five years?

The last one did take some time to fill up - as though we were in a 'phoney war' type period. How many will this go to? Will we have another 5 years and then find that we are (partially) rejoining, or Scotland becomes independent or Ireland re-unites. It's a brave person who would predict all of these if and when. However most of us predicted that Brexit would not go well, and indeed this is how it has proved.

Just a reminder to keen Brexiters whose electricity supply has been disturbed. EDF stands for Electricite de France.

The Torygraph is increasingly having 'what's this all about articles'.

www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2021/09/22/hopes-joining-americas-trade-bloc-look-like-pointless-posturing/

"Not for nothing is the Department for International Trade rumoured to be nicknamed “Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V” in Westminster. Liz Truss is the queen of cut-and-paste, say critics – any post-Brexit trade deals are mere replicas of those that already existed with that particular country when we were part of the European Union, which isn’t exactly the premise on which Brexit was sold to voters."

.....

"If the big prize in international trade terms is a bilateral pact, the USMCA is firmly the wooden spoon. Trump hated its predecessor, the North American Free Trade Agreement, so much that he tried to kill it.

Experts say the benefits would be negligible at best. One estimate is that membership would be worth an additional 0.1-0.2pc of GDP to the economy.

Crucially, the UK wouldn’t be able to name the price for joining it. So it would have swapped one trade bloc where it had limited ability to set the terms, in order to join another where the rules have been set by someone else. And what would the true cost be – allowing chlorinated chicken or other imports deemed harmful to British interests?"

I thought "Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V" was a nickname for a prominent Brexiteer on this board Wink

When Liz Truss isn't canoodling with Kwasi Kwarteng (Gavin Williamson Chief Whip spreadsheet gossip) maybe she has time to put on her Clav Cloak and moonlight here.

All I can say is that the car crash is far far worse than I imagined and there are definitely no emergency services on their way to save us.

Basically we are f*cked.

Following on from @auldalliance and my posts at the end of the last thread, what particularly irritated me about BJ pidgeon French is that he can speak fluent French.

So it is deliberately boorish and rude Angry

But there again, what did I expect? Confused He's a boorish and rude man, who unfortunately is representing the UK on the world stage Sad

BJ knows that that kind of deliberate juvenile boorishness will not do him any harm amongst Tory faithful.
He could skin a cat alive and eat it with silver cutlery and it would pass as another harmless jape.

Is it only Clav now in this backwater? There were a few hit and runner 'remoaners' , 'wouldn't vote anything but leave' types on the breakout thread a few days ago that went to an angry 1000 posts before dying. There is a lot of righteous anger building now from many who thought Brexit was 'done' but patently wasn't. It has only just begun in it's impact and real-world ramifications.

Angela Rayner was fab today standing in for Sir Keir, certainly landed a few punches on slippery Raab.

He doesn't care though Prettybird. He's just playing to his gallery.

Which means this country under him is absolutely fucked. He has spent his whole life taking the absolute piss, in every job and relationship. All that's ever happened is that he has been rewarded for every failure.

What this govenment has shown is that the institutions and laws rules we though would protect us against a vicious and / or incomptent government are far too weak.

They are therefore useless against a PM and cabinet who have no moral code and don't give a shit about the country or the people in it.

I'm currently in the calm but wondering WTF now phase, with plenty of gallows humour about each visit to the supermarket having the possibility of resemble Deutschland '83.

These are strange times, with the last five years of Brexit, Boris and Trump, I've given up trying to predict the future as you cannot make it up.

Ds tells me that his local Lidl in Aberdeen didn't have any eggs for 3 days in a row and at the weekend didn't have cereal. I've told him that he needs to get into the habit of always having a "spare" of things he uses regularly and replacing it as soon as he finishes the first item. Not sure he'll actually listen to me Wink

'Elite'cats aside (they look very lovely btw) bottled water is the new toilet rolls at the moment. Apparently, as it's unperishable and bulky it gets the bumrush when supermarkets are prioritising deliveries. When are we going to get our Brexit ration books ?

"For far too long this country had allowed itself to become swamped with foreign food. But now the kitchen tables have been turned. We've taken back control and can cook what we blooming well like. So, put down your croissant, stop chomping on your ciabatta and cook something properly patriotic for a change with The Brexit Cookbook."
