Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

Apologies if this has already been observed regarding the petrol rationing but remember that Gove quote:
"we'll hold all the cards after leaving the European Union.."

He was prophetic ..he meant ration cards.

prettybird · 23/09/2021 23:05

@lonelyplanetmum - I'd laugh if that weren't so sad Sad

I have about 200 miles worth of petrol left on the car. Enough to last us about 3 weeks, provided we don't need to drive up to Aberdeen where the petrol is c3p/litre cheaper anyway for any reason Smile

Also, dh and I are now old enough to get free bus travel around Scotland Grin (or £1 booking fee for long distance routes)

vera99 · 23/09/2021 23:14

I follow the excellent Maximillien Robespierre on YouTube who provides almost daily insightful commentaries on Brexit. Here he is on the Daniel Hannan debacle on Newsnight the other night.

Good idea. It would be sensible to prioritise fuel for buses. At least there's an enforced environmental benefit to fuel economy..

I recall (way back in the mists of time) that some of the Brexit Arms brigade were sort of showing prospective nostalgia when warned of the prospects of rationing.

Peregrina · 23/09/2021 23:24

Hmm, rationing - talk to my 98 year old MIL about that. She and her sister went out to do a hard day's work; meanwhile the younger brothers scoffed all the rations. Both she and her sister married young to get away from home.

prettybird · 23/09/2021 23:34

107 posts in c28 hours. We might fill this latest thread more quickly than the last one Grin .....as chickens begin to come home to roost and the government struggles to blame it all on Covid, as other countries are able to weather the storm and recovery better Confused

peewitsandy · 23/09/2021 23:34

With the state of the U.K post Brexit it surely can only be a matter of time , that the poor people on dinghies decide to stay put in France and the E.U which are far superior entities !

Peregrina · 23/09/2021 23:36

We still had rationing when I was born in the 1950s - six years after the war finished. I believe it didn't finally stop until 1954.

It's one thing to have rationing because all your energy and money is going to fighting an evil dictatorship. It was quite another to have rationing for 8 years afterwards. Do Brexiters really think that blue passports are worth nearly a decade of shortages?

That you, Nigel?
Lonelycrab · 24/09/2021 07:22

Well it will be interesting going to the garage for petrol after the school run.

I wonder if we have reached the point where the penny drops for many people. Brexit was always sold on “well things will just carry on as normal won’t they?”

FrankieStein403 · 24/09/2021 07:56

R4 today just now - Robinson interview with shapps re hgv driver shortage - my paraphrasing:
"you've named several causes but you haven't mentioned Brexit, come on that's made it worse hasn't it?"
shapps: "actually Brexit has made it better, we can change the driver regulations"

What is it about brexiteers that they won't admit Brexit has made anything worse?

prettybird · 24/09/2021 08:08

They're extending the time drivers can be on the road per day from 9 to 11 hours. Wonderful how Brexit has made things safe that weren't safe before!

I always look forward to seeing your flowers @dontcallmelen Thanks

The papers headlines are guaranteed to cause a run on filling stations.

As for Grant Schapps - why is ripping up health and safety regs. a benefit? Not that it will entice many drivers back - they had had enough of long hours and poor conditions.

prettybird · 24/09/2021 08:34

What do you think the reaction will be when the first accident happens involving a collision between an HGV whose driver has been on the road for 10 hours and a car? Sad

vera99 · 24/09/2021 08:56

Apparently, bus drivers are moving jobs to become lorry drivers because the wages are higher. So that will be public transport affected, indeed it is.

What this developing shitshow is showing so dramatically is how interconnected and complex our society is today and why you muck around with it wholesale at your peril. But even a half-wit knows that but not our leaders apparently.

Lord Sugar weighs in ...with some commonsense advice

"Covid distracted us of the devastating commercial effect of Brexit. Truck drivers ran back to EU. Small companies can't do business in the EU due to VAT and Duty issues. Supermarkets shelves are empty due to a lack of deliveries. Govt needs to relax work permits for EU drivers".

vera99 · 24/09/2021 10:20

Hah - she out scavenging for petrol, water and food like all good patriotic Brexiteers.

You can argue that the driver shortage is a direct consequence of 'cheap foreign labour' going home or you can argue that the driver shortage is not uniquely bad in Brexit Britain. But you can't really argue both.

grannycake · 24/09/2021 10:28

11 hrs driving time - doesn't take waits for loading/unloading into account. MY DH used to do 12hr shifts regularly under the old rules - part of the reason he doesn't drive a HGV any more

LouiseCollins28 · 24/09/2021 10:28

People moving from other sectors of the economy to become truck drivers because the wages are increasing is a good thing! If the bus companies want to keep their drivers, then they'll just have to pay them more won't they Smile excellent news.

Chersfrozenface · 24/09/2021 10:41

Or the bus companies will just cut services.

I note that National Express is in talks to buy Stagecoach, which not only runs long distance services but also local and regional buses. So less competition, therefore probably less choice, higher prices and quite possibly fewer services.

wewereliars · 24/09/2021 10:41

Yes a bonus for the individual employees, but it will lead to price rises, and push up inflation, which hits the poorest hardest.

Plus there is now a net deficit of available labour in this country, so more money will just shift the problem around until the labour pool increases.
