Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

As much as I would like to hang around and chat today I have a fun day out to a well known visitor attraction - I shall report back if I spot other people shamelessly enjoying themselves. Wink

A couple of brief links:

Yesterday -
Nippon Gases, which sold almost $1.5 billion of industrial gases on the continent last year, said "other countries in Europe will also suffer shortages" of CO2, estimating that its supplies had fallen 50 per cent across the region, the FT said.

Japanese-owned Nippon Gases, which supplies Scandinavian and western European nations including Sweden, France and Germany, said nuclear power stations, meat production and medical purposes were top of the list...

Irish Times, 16 September 2021

Last week a shortfall in power left Ireland at risk of blackouts after the Single Electricity Market Operator (Semo) issued another amber warning “due to a generation shortfall”.

Urban Waste Water: Commission decides to refer FRANCE to the Court of Justice over waste water treatment.

Peregrina · 23/09/2021 09:50

Cut n paste inova always goes out, only ever tells us the failings of other countries, preferably EU ones, and never lists the benefits as she sees them of Brexit.

Kendodd · 23/09/2021 09:58

I have zero sympathy for brexit/Tory voters now suffering due to their own stupidity in falling for all the (completely and demonstrably obvious) lies they were told.

And I bet they would all vote exactly the same again, its unbelievable just how cult like their support is, Johnson/Farage and the rest of them know this.

TheElementsSong · 23/09/2021 10:07

As long as somebody somewhere else is experiencing something that is less than ideal, therefore ToryBrexitannia is great! 🐿🐿🐿🐿

TheABC · 23/09/2021 10:13

On the plus side; since we are likely to have the Tories in for the foreseeable future, they get ALL the fall out from Brexit.

Which seems to have more bugs than features at the moment. I hope their backers are happy.

Peregrina · 23/09/2021 10:23

No, they do not get the fall out - it's all the Remainers/EU/Corbyn's fault (strike out as appropriate).

Kendodd · 23/09/2021 10:27

they get ALL the fall out from Brexit.

Except, the people who voted for it and campaigned for it don't care how much hardship it brings, even to themselves.
Brexit has bought a united Ireland closer then anything Sinn Féin has ever done and even the DUP are still absolutely 100% committed to it ffs.

vera99 · 23/09/2021 10:36

The UK government is now warning people about the hidden financial "dangers" of ordering products from the EU !!! ... They didn't put THAT on the side of a bus ! Meanwhile, Uk exporters come up against the almost impenetrable wall of EU regs to protect the single market whereas EU exporters can import with no hindrances we're our border controls are not ready yet.

The implication from that guidance is that it is only because some of it is wine (which is excisable) which is from NZ Confused

It's not that simple Hmm

vera99 · 23/09/2021 10:53

The important thing to note here is the effect of Rules of Origin outside the Customs Union. Johnson's deal only covers EU-made goods. So if your order from the EU has too many non-EU components in it, you'll have to pay tariffs. Brexiters were warned about this but didn't care, the so-called bare bones deal.

AuldAlliance · 23/09/2021 11:19

France is being referred by the European Commission to the Court of Justice over its failure to meet with waste water disposal requirements set by the EU. One would hope that will lead to improvements.

The Commission presumably can't refer the UK to the Court of Justice in such cases.

I'm hard put to see why this is an advantage of Brexit, TBH.

Peregrina · 23/09/2021 11:20

The Kent Bylines explanation for rises in energy prices.

Peregrina · 23/09/2021 11:31

While perusing the Kent Bylines, I came across this article about why we must reject Fascism This is something that many today e.g. followers of Farage, would do well to remember.

Kendodd · 23/09/2021 11:36

@AuldAlliance
I agree. Did @claivnova post this as a advantage of Brexit? We are now free to pollute?
Wasn't it an EU court that made us clean up our beaches?
Presumably another Brexit bonus will be we're able to swim in sewage again?

prettybird · 23/09/2021 11:54

The government's own web site says, as the first reason why it is giving additional permission to discharge insufficiently treated effluent, that the lack of necessary chemicals is because of Brexit the UK's new relationship with the EU Hmm

wewereliars · 23/09/2021 12:09

Other "unavoidable supply chain failures" If only Brexit had not been unavoidable.

No food on the shelves, filthy water, mass impoverishment. So much winning.

But a volano has erupted somewhere forrin, so all is good.

FlatteredFool · 23/09/2021 13:56

I do love a good sewage swim. Really helps clear the sinuses and exfoliates the skin.

thegreywoman · 23/09/2021 15:31

PMK

LouiseCollins28 · 23/09/2021 16:33

Am I correct in thinking that "Westministenders" has died then? I'm guessing this is the new hangout. PMK.

RunningOnFumes · 23/09/2021 17:15

I am old(ish) - I remember having to clean tar and goodness knows what else off my feet after swimming in the sea as a child. Ah the good old days!

prettybird · 23/09/2021 17:32

@LouiseCollins28 - I'd started to draft a new thread with Westministenders in the title but @vera99 got in before me Wink

Lonelycrab · 23/09/2021 17:45

Pmk. Although I’m a tiny bit sad that this isn’t a westminstenders, it may be more appropriate, as although things were a bit like a soap opera when these threads started years ago, it’s more like a horror film these days.

prettybird · 23/09/2021 17:57

I think Westministenders as a title still has relevance as so much of what we have issue with is is the shenanigans at Westminster by the current shower in power Angry (and the lack of credible opposition Sad)

....so it depends on how quickly this thread fills up. Grin

mathanxiety · 23/09/2021 18:22

I know you're out having fun and all, @Clavinova, but maybe when you come home, you could actually read that Irish Times article you posted.

DrBlackbird · 23/09/2021 18:25

PMK. Just back from ensuring both cars are filled up.
