Can remainers tell me why you wouldn't vote for Corbyn in a GE?

Discussing Brexit with centre right friend who is adament despite voting Labour in previous elections she would never vote for Corbyn. When pressed she mentions links to trade unions but can't tell me why that's a bad thing.

I don't love Corbyn but I would vote for him over the absolute mess that is the Tories at the moment. Why for remain/Labour voters right now is he so politically toxic?

“You have to be a higher rate taxpayer to pay your way - it’s not true that the poor are paying a disproportionate amount of tax.”
It is actually true.

ListeningQuietly · 08/09/2019 13:01

John McDonnell has talked about putting the basic rate of tax back up to what it was under Margaret Thatcher

If 26% was good enough for Maggie, why is everybody so scared of it now?

yellowallpaper · 08/09/2019 16:32

Actually Bertrandrussel, if you don't reach the tax threshold you pay no tax at all, so hardly disproportionate

fatandfettered · 08/09/2019 16:33

Diane Abbott.

Herocomplex · 08/09/2019 16:40

Of course tax disproportionately affects the poor. It’s why the flat rate tax idea is such nonsense.

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2019 16:44

VAT

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2019 16:46

Grin at the idea of being put off voting Labour by Diane Abbott in a world with Boris Johnson in it.

yellowallpaper · 08/09/2019 19:14

Are you happy with their inaction re anti semitism? Or dismissing moderate MPs in favour of hard liners? Apparently john McDonnell was too left wing for Red Ken and sacked (according to DH). Do we really want to be dragged back to a time of major strikes and a government held to ransom by powerful unions?

Itstheprinciple · 08/09/2019 19:38

I wouldn't vote Labour as they are only just starting to get their act together in some sort of coherent way over Brexit. I think its too late, although I will have to wait for the specifics of their manifesto.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 08/09/2019 20:13

As for all those supposed “loopholes” the rich can use, what are they

Depends on how they get their income, accountants are paid to find loopholes wherever possible depending on the level of tax avoidance as opposed to tax evasion

Having said that there are clever people running round shutting loopholes and investigating tax evasion so its not an easy thing that most rich people would do. Not as common as some may think

malificent7 · 09/09/2019 01:06

Can someone please tell me how he is anti semetic? What has he said/ done?

bellinisurge · 09/09/2019 06:36

He has tolerated some full on anti-semites in his party .

BertrandRussell · 09/09/2019 06:52

The whole anti Semitic thing is very murky indeed- but it is in society at large as well. It shows up less in the Conservative party because it tends to be “pro Israel”, while the Labour Party tends to be “pro Palestine”. (using very broad brush, crude terms) It’s a very complicated and emotive subject. Meanwhile, the Conservatives islamiphobia goes unchecked, even at the highest levels.

bellinisurge · 09/09/2019 06:59

I have a Jewish Dad. It feels pretty bloody "unmurky" to me. And before you say it, islamaphobia makes me sick too.
Go after one group one day and I'm next.
