To ask if anyone is considering stockpiling

Ninoo25 · 28/07/2018 15:09

Just that really, given that the government asking industry to stockpile food and medicines has been all over the news in the past week, I was wondering how many people are planning on stockpiling themselves and if so what are you going to stockpile and how much?
TBH my main concern is long term medication that I’m on, but as it’s only available on prescription and Dr wouldn’t let me order more than I need, so there’s nothing I can do about that anyway!

No

FASH84 · 28/07/2018 15:10

What for?

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 15:11

I am!
I think they’ll be a rough couple of months at least and I’d rather have too much than too little.

Katinkka · 28/07/2018 15:11

No need.

PositivelyPERF · 28/07/2018 15:12

I’ve started asking for the meds, for my youngest, a day or so before they’re due. They haven’t picked up on it yet. 😉 I know that I’ve five days extra now.

Bombardier25966 · 28/07/2018 15:12

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/preppers

There's a whole board on the topic!

Worrying that someone wouldn't know what for. I guess ignorance is bliss!

HirplesWithHaggis · 28/07/2018 15:14

I will be adding extra cans and non-perishable goods as I shop, to build up a small stockpile. If it's not needed, it'll be eaten eventually anyway.

Somerville · 28/07/2018 15:14

Yes.

Hopefully it won’t be necessary but I’d rather be prepared.
(Try saying you’re going on holiday and your meds will run out halfway through to get a week or two extra just in case.)

Bombardier25966 · 28/07/2018 15:15

On the meds issue, I know our local CCG are making some kind of a plan/ policy because they're getting more and more queries. I'd assume others are too. I work with a care home owner so it's obviously a big concern for them.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 15:15

positivelyperf I’m always losing my meds and have never been questioned when putting in my prescription Blush

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2018 15:17

I’m going to start stockpiling foods the we love and have a long shelf life, partly due to rising costs and partly due to empty shelves.

Just look at what happens when it snows, the shelves empty and that’s over a few days...

Nothing I can do about prescription medication, but if I don’t take it then I will become unwell

Singlenotsingle · 28/07/2018 15:17

No. I've seen people talking about it, but never seen anything official.

NigelGresley · 28/07/2018 15:17

No. Stockpiling could actually end up causing shortages.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 15:19

I disagree nigel I think it’s better to stockpile by getting a few extra bits per week rather than panic buy

Poodletip · 28/07/2018 15:21

I haven't started, I don't really know where to start, but for the first time in my life, I am seriously considering it.

Ninoo25 · 28/07/2018 15:23

Thanks Bombardier, I didn’t realise there was a whole board already dedicated to this!

Yes.

GreenIce · 28/07/2018 15:23

If we do need to store stuff, how long is the shortage supposed to last or is it impossible to know?

UglyCathKidstonBag · 28/07/2018 15:24

The Preppers board is great, as are the threads in Brexit about this topic but I do think it needs a wider audience.

rinabean · 28/07/2018 15:24

No, because either we won't have shortages or we will have shortages and there will be huge riots. In neither case would a bit of extra tinned food be any help, and as you say, GPs won't let you stockpile medicine anyway.

PositivelyPERF · 28/07/2018 15:24

positivelyperf I’m always losing my meds and have never been questioned when putting in my prescription

That’s actually quite worrying. The lack of questioning by the clinic, that is. Are your meds dangerous?

Childrenofthesun · 28/07/2018 15:24

Yes, going to get about a week's supply in. Doesn't matter to me how unlikely no-deal is, if there is even the slightest possibility I want to be prepared. There would definitely be at least hiccups in the supply chain. And if I had family members dependent on medications like Insulin, I would definitely be trying to build up a bit of a supply.

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2018 15:26

I have looked through various websites for store cupboard recipes

Dahl & rice
Bean chilli & rice
Chickpea curry & rice
Risotto with any vegetables going - powdered stock
Foods that will keep but can be purchased and easily turned into meals

Purchasing an extra 4/5 store cupboard meals each week isn’t going to break the bank, but will be useful if stock, money etc are low

SchadenfreudePersonified · 28/07/2018 15:26

No. Haven't got the money. Haven't got the storage space.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 15:26

positivelyperf I don’t think they’re dangerous, although yes it is worrying that I could potentially be stocking up on them to overdose or sell I suppose! I get a months worth and have put in a prescription a week after the last one and wasn’t questioned .
