To ask if anyone is considering stockpiling

Ninoo25 · 28/07/2018 15:09

Just that really, given that the government asking industry to stockpile food and medicines has been all over the news in the past week, I was wondering how many people are planning on stockpiling themselves and if so what are you going to stockpile and how much?
TBH my main concern is long term medication that I’m on, but as it’s only available on prescription and Dr wouldn’t let me order more than I need, so there’s nothing I can do about that anyway!

I probably won’t stockpile as I’m lazy, but I know I should. I’m not a tin-hat end of the world type, and I think (or hope?) that the vision of supermarkets suddenly being completely bare is an exaggeration. But prices will almost certainly shoot up overnight - I don’t really see any way that can be avoided. I’m on a low wage with little to spare every month, so this will be challenging.

Milkshake agreed, rationing due to shortages is more probable and long queue like the eastern block in the 70s

FurryDogMother · 28/07/2018 15:43

Given that we currently have cupboards stuffed with various pulses, tins, long life skimmed milk, flour and other dry goods - erm, no - I don't have room, and it would probably be a good thing to have to live off what we already have. I think I could probably survive a couple of months on existing stock, without buying more!

Hamiltoes · 28/07/2018 15:44

Don't just buy something at the shops, that is literally going to do nothing, that's just stressing you out and wasting your money for no reason.

I disagree rina. I don't believe it's going to be a walking dead situation (and if it was, I have a cross bow Wink) but I think realistically there may be a chance of short term shortages of certain things while everything smooths out. You know the "sainsbos have eggs but no ketchup, tescos have ketchup but no bread" on certain days type of thing. If that started I'd rather just avoid the need to do any serious shopping for a few weeks and live of the stuff I have in. I'll get some UHT and bread to freeze nearer the time and if it comes to it I know I'm sorted. No stress involved, and no money wasted since i'll save 2 weeks grocery money.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 15:46

Note to self - buy a crossbow Grin

Ihatemycar · 28/07/2018 15:46

Not at all. Brexit isn't the end of the world.

KittyHawke80 · 28/07/2018 15:46

Yes. But I’m one of those ‘survivalist’ Y2K loons who thought the world was going to end.

FurryDogMother · 28/07/2018 15:46

Oh, just a thought for those of you freezing a load of things - there could be power cuts, so make sure you have non frozen food too!

ScrubTheDecks · 28/07/2018 15:48

I am not quite sure what I should stockpile.

I’m guessing Clinique skincare, property and a Polish plumber would be a start?

Roussette · 28/07/2018 15:48

In answer to the OP. NO.

Panic buying breeds panic buying and threads like this do nothing to help.

As for people breaking into my house to get at the spaghetti sauce I shoved in the freezer... Grin Grin

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 15:49

I don’t think stockpiling is the same as panic buying? Adding a few extra bits of stuff to your weekly shop vs wrestling old ladies at Tesco to get the last load of bread

specialsubject · 28/07/2018 15:50

I spent some time living in Greece so I don't have the expectation that I will always find what I am looking for in the shop. As anyone who shops at Aldi will also be used to!

keep a few days provisions at most times, common sense. Also keep some cash which many don't seem to given the wailing whenever a bank falls over - and that happens quite a lot.

it is also common sense to have a corded phone (assuming you have a working landline which is also a good idea), candles, matches, batteries, a few bottles of water and a couple of torches.

nothing to do with brexit.

ScrubTheDecks · 28/07/2018 15:50

When will these shortages start? After Christmas? I can comfortably live off selection boxes for a few weeks, I think.

Dopplerineffect · 28/07/2018 15:50

Nah I would just rather die

brainepson · 28/07/2018 15:51

No but have been watching the US preppers programmes and thinking, hmm, some of that looks sensible.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 28/07/2018 15:52

I stockpile normally because I live in the sort of place where food supplies get cut off with reasonable frequency. I also don't like to shop, so order bulk quantities online.
I have about 3 trays of tinned tomatoes, 25 g of pasta, 10kg of couscous,10 kg brown rice, plus large food bins full of flour (SR, plain, bread and pizza types) as well as pet food, tomato and garlic purees, dried yeast, and a sack or two of lentils etc in my pantry at the moment.
I might increase my hoard a bit, but prepping is pretty much what I normally do anyway. I might get in some extra fuel for the boat in case we need more fish, but otherwise I think we'll be okay.

eightfacesofthemoon · 28/07/2018 15:52

Isn’t this called mass hysteria

BeyondRadicalisationPortal · 28/07/2018 15:53

I keep attempting to buy storecupboard 'emergency' things (like, say, jars of pasta bake) but stbxh (living here, not just randomly nicking my food!) keeps using them - instead of cooking from scratch as he usually would Hmm

quizqueen · 28/07/2018 15:53

If you stockpile, that means others go short. Does anyone really want to be part of an organisation which would treat this country, which has come to their members' defence more than once before, behave so badly and be so spiteful that it would see people go without essential medicines! We can do without 'friends and allies' like that.

We can all live without French cheeses, champagnes etc. and other EU imports for a while. It is their producers who will be begging for a quick free trade deal. I mostly buy British as much as I can to support my own country's companies and farmers. If other products like sugar and so on can't through so quickly for a few weeks that will be a good excuse for going on a diet. Really, I don't how the rest of the world copes without being in the EU!!!

wagil · 28/07/2018 15:53

What madness is this? I feel like I've fallen down a rabbit hole.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 15:54

Scrubthedecks whatever your family eat or use that’s imported. we import a lot of wine so you could stockpile that Grin

Somerville · 28/07/2018 15:55

Stockpiling doesn’t mean others going short... it’s panic buying at the last minute which does that.

The shops near me couldn’t get (British) milk on the shelves when there was snow, back in March. It’s not just about imported products, unfortunately.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 15:56

British suppliers can’t produce enough of anything to satisfy demand at the moment and it’s not about luxury items like French cheese and champagne, we import most of our fruit and veg so I’m adding a couple of tins to my weekly shop for example

BeyondRadicalisationPortal · 28/07/2018 15:56

Meds wise, my drs have a habit of buggering them up every so often, so I already have a stash... I miss one tablet every so often but get repeats as normal. Obviously it's taken quite a while to build up my stash though (I have about two weeks worth)

Roussette · 28/07/2018 15:57

Bloody 'ell, how many live in your family? It would take us 5 years to get through that lot. Don't you worry about mice?

wagil I've fallen down the same rabbit hole as you.
