To ask if anyone is considering stockpiling

Just that really, given that the government asking industry to stockpile food and medicines has been all over the news in the past week, I was wondering how many people are planning on stockpiling themselves and if so what are you going to stockpile and how much?
TBH my main concern is long term medication that I’m on, but as it’s only available on prescription and Dr wouldn’t let me order more than I need, so there’s nothing I can do about that anyway!

If you stockpile, that means others go short
No, it doesn't. Buying now when there are plentiful supplies has no effect at all on other people. Buying huge quantities when there is an established shortage is anti-social and selfish. But at the moment there is no shortage.

eightfacesofthemoon · 28/07/2018 15:59

25 grams of pasta!!! That’s not really stockpiling

OkMaybeNot · 28/07/2018 16:00

Yes, I am. Mainly imported foods and foods that are made in the UK but with imported ingredients.

Unfortunately nothing fresh because we don't have the fridge space, but we are lucky enough to have a waterproof garage and a space I am making into a larder, so non-perishables.

You will have streams of people telling you to get a grip, but I'm with you. I want to minimise my exposure to inflated prices, which are absolutely inevitable. We're not talking about starvation, we're talking not being able to afford food.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 28/07/2018 16:01

Bloody 'ell, how many live in your family? It would take us 5 years to get through that lot. Don't you worry about mice?

there are six of us, including two teenagers! We live on a Scottish island which gets cut off with depressing regularity, so relying on local food supplies is unwise.

I don't worry about vermin because I use food-grade storage bins (with wheels for easy moving about). Anything which could be attractive to rodents is stored in containers, nothing is left out at all.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 28/07/2018 16:02

oops! I meant 25kg! 25g wouldn't feed one teenager.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 16:02

Those of you against stockpiling what do you do if there’s power cuts, snow, food shortages etc there was fruit and veg shortages not long ago and the supermarket shelves were empty.
I think stockpiling is common sense, preparing for what will be a few difficult months rather than prepping for the end of the world scenario

eightfacesofthemoon · 28/07/2018 16:03

@DontDribbleOnTheCarpet
Hahaha!

eightfacesofthemoon · 28/07/2018 16:04

I guess I live in London so I don’t need to.
But if I lived in the outer Hebrides then fair enough. But that’s not got anything to do with brexit

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/07/2018 16:04

I will. I don’t want to, but I am responsible for the dogs.

Dog food, meds, food.

Fuck this Brexit shit.

Roussette · 28/07/2018 16:05

I totally understand then!

Milkshake if some of the fruit and veg I want aren't available, I just buy different fruit and veg! I have never been to a supermarket that had NO fruit and veg at all, there's always something to buy.

Freshprincess · 28/07/2018 16:08

3 trays of tinned tomatoes, 25 g of pasta, 10kg of couscous,10 kg brown rice, plus large food bins full of flour
Shock How long would that normally last? That much couscous would last me 10 years!

I'm trying to keep a bigger store cupboard, mainly to curb the 'top-up' shops I do every couple of days which is costing me a fortune. I hadn't really thought about Brexit.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 28/07/2018 16:11

Another one here who just buys something different if they haven't got what I want in the shops. Or go without and wait for it to come back in stock.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 28/07/2018 16:12

I'm not really sure how long it lasts, because things are renewed as they get low and it's never more than a couple of things at a time. 10kg of almost anything isn't that much though, when you have to feed 6 people with it.

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2018 16:13

Qui queen, can you explain how buying extra each week means others go short?

As for buying British, well done you but there won’t be enough to go around therefore prices will escalate

viques · 28/07/2018 16:13

I am downloading tasty squirrel and pigeon recipes from the internet ..........

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2018 16:15

Have you eaten pigeon? It’s very tasty 😋

SilverySurfer · 28/07/2018 16:15

Isn’t this called mass hysteria?

More like hysterical I reckon Grin

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 16:15

That’s usually for a few days at the most though and only a small selection of food. If there’s no deal we lose almost half of our food supply. People who haven’t stockpiled will panic buy what they can.
The government are crap and the fact they’re trying to stockpile food and medications seems pretty ominous when usually it’s very much ‘it’ll be alright don’t worry’ from May.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 16:17

Also although it seems that we have until March 29th in reality we need to reach a deal in the next few months for everything to be faffed over and signed off etc

BreconBeBuggered · 28/07/2018 16:19

I live in a small country town which has the only large supermarket for miles. I really doesn't take many days of snow for every single bit of fruit and veg to be cleared off the shelves.
I don't think about it much in the daytime but I've had the odd dream about being burgled for tins of rice pudding. I worry more about rationing food amongst my own family if supplies are short. Never mind riots in the streets - if I caught DH absently eating rationed food meant for DS there would be bloodshed. Most of us aren't ready for dietary denial.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/07/2018 16:20

Oh rice pudding.

I’ll put that on the list.

Quite looking forward to WWII style rationing...it's the only way I'll ever lose weight 🤷‍♀️

(only joking..I think 🤔 😂)

RedneckStumpy · 28/07/2018 16:22

rinabean

I agree, that is why you shouldn’t broadcast your supplies, tell no one.

You should also be armed and fully prepared to defend your home.

TheClitterati · 28/07/2018 16:22

I will stock up on canned and dry goods, UHT milk etc. If it's not needed it will still get used so it's really no big deal.
