I remember her going missing and have been reading the background now this this news, and it is shocking how her case was handled. I can't believe it took 25 years for it to be upgraded from a missing person case to a murder case. Now that it is a murder case the gardai have more powers to investigate.

I really hope and pray her remains are found and her family can finally get peace and justice. Hopefully justice prevails, the family say they and the gardai have known all along who murdered her.

Hopefully the other young women who went missing in the same area, around the same time, will also have their cases investigated again.

romdowa · 12/11/2024 10:46

That article is so sad. I never knew that the gardai handled it all so badly. I hope her poor family get the truth , I think hoping for justice could be too much, the corrupt alway get away Scott free in this country

KittytheHare · 12/11/2024 10:49

It is shocking what has emerged today. Really sounds like a cover-up.

Luxembourgmama · 12/11/2024 10:54

What scumbags the gardai are. Apparently everyone in the local area know who it was hr had scratches on his face in the days after

I live in the local area, and I have no idea who the killer was.

None of the older people I know, know who it was either.

I keep hearing that people In the local area know. I haven't heard anything. I haven't even heard a known detail about him

Like, was he a farmer?

So who was the alleged killer? Has anyone heard anything about him

HolyStyleFailBatman · 12/11/2024 11:04

I remember the poor woman going missing as well. I had no idea that the family were treated so badly and the investigation was so badly handled. I do remember, years later, hearing things that sounded like victim blaming to me, about how much she drank and that kind of thing. She was 21! How much she socialised has no bearing on anything.

I hope they get justice soon, they have been waiting too long already.

BarbaraHoward · 12/11/2024 11:05

I read that article last night, and saw plenty more detail on Twitter.

Truly shocking.

Perhaps I'm naive, but I didn't think the mainstream parties in the south would have this kind of power. I'm in the North now and would believe it here because, y'know..., but I am shocked about this case.

I hope her family get closure and the man is brought to justice.

I live fairly close, and the only person I heard named was the serial killer, Larry Murphy. Sounds like that might be a red herring? It's hard to believe anything you hear now.

Yeah it says online now that it is definitely not Larry Murphy who has been arrested in connection with her case.

I see on boards.ie (irish chat forum) that people are saying that the family, gardai and local people already suspected the man that has been arrested.

He must be well protected as it is very hard to get any information at all about him

jouxlake · 12/11/2024 11:15

Oh my god, that is just awful.

Loads more details on SM

The family of JoJo were told who it was by the gardai it seems, as per the link above. He came from an influential political and wealthy farming family.

I have read elsewhere his name has been out there from early days. Someone who thinks they witnessed JoJo at the time and was able to describe a car, said the gardai only took a cursory statement and never got back to him. A farmer who found a grave and disturbed land and reported it, said it was never investigated, lots more incidents like that apparently. It does seem they were trying not to find a reason to investigate further, if all of what is now coming out is true.

That is so awful if it's true. I thought the Gardai were better than that.

If they're that corrupt, it's truly shocking.

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 11:23

If its true, its horrible that political and wealthy people can bribe themselves out of being charged with murder.

Those old gardai have probably left the force. Hopefully the newer gardai are better

Please, don't name the individual arrested or this thread will be deleted.

I agree, I didn't mean a name.

I meant had anyone heard anything at all about him.

Like was he a farmer or anything.

jouxlake · 12/11/2024 11:28

They must have some specific information to have been able to get a search warrant and to be digging up a particular area. Don't know how true this, but apparently it is land which they were unable to search previously.

30 years ago, the Gardai were corrupt, no doubt about it, even on a very low level certain publicans were 'allowed' have after-hours, drink driving charges never brought, speeding fines 'lost'. it was always the influential politicians,, GAA, wealthy well connected, etc who managed to make things disappear. Murder is a whole different level though.

I'm not from the area but I know people who are and they have known his name since day one.
The red herrings put out like Larry Murphy, were dismissed as soon as they started, by many. The name of the person being questioned is all over social media so it's difficult to see how people are still unaware. Was he being protected until his Daddy died? Daddy was a prominent FG MEP. When he is charged there will be outrage and many, many questions to be answered. The family have always said this goes right to the top. There should be no hiding place for anyone regardless of who they are.

jouxlake · 12/11/2024 11:32

He would have been 24 at the time, his father was very influential apparently., It does sound like a massive coverup, hopefully they find JoJo and can prove once and for all who the murderer is.

jouxlake · 12/11/2024 11:33

Like was he a farmer or anything.

Wealthy farming family with strong political connections.

Onehorsetown · 12/11/2024 11:35

Is this why there have been so many resignations from the party over the last couple of years I wonder? Did they know what was coming down the line?
I had read speculation but this is on a whole other level than anything I could have imagined.

I just signed up for X(twitter). I wasn't on it before.

Ah, after siging up for X, I now see a lot more information.

Allegedly the suspect was the son of a senior politician.

Shocking!

I really hope so. But Maurice McCabe was put through hell as a whistleblower and that was relatively recent.

Thanks. It's very shocking isn't it. Not that someone from a wealthy political farming family could do something like that. Anyone could be a murderer

But its shocking that the gardai could know, and not charge him because of who he was!

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 11:43

It says on X that the Gardai even told Jojos sister , that they knew who killed jojo, md they even knew how jojos body had been disposed of, but they couldn't do anything about it
