Horrendous to have your sister disappear like that, but then to hit brick walls at every turn, because someone is being protected. I imagine I would go insane with the injustice of it.

I have nothing but admiration for JoJos' family and am praying the gardai can see this through..

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 11:54

I'm just disgusted at the Gardai.
Why wouldn't you charge someone, even if he was a politicians son.

What would they gain from it. I guess the politician had protection from the whole party, and the gardai were leaned on

Those old gardai have probably left the force. Hopefully the newer gardai are better
I really hope so. But Maurice McCabe was put through hell as a whistleblower and that was relatively recent.

To be fair to Gardaí they would have come under immense pressure from their political masters to look the other way. There are regular references to the power of the church but the power of politicians and wealthy elite landowners was equal if not greater back then. Some try to equate then with what happens now and there's a huge difference. The focus when he is charged should be asking who was that powerful, who had enough influence? There are probably files being 'lost' right now.

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 11:56

I'll never forget a woman I met who told me an awful story about powerful men in Ireland. It's nearly too awful to write here.

Onehorsetown · 12/11/2024 11:57

To read that they released information that JoJo had had an abortion, knowing how that would have been viewed by so many people in the 90s. The family gave her medical records hoping they would help the investigation but they used them to smear her character.
"She added: “They swore on the bible it would be kept confidential, but then they went and told a newspaper.
“That was nothing to do with her death. It was a conscious attempt to stop me pushing Jo Jo’s case. Smearing her was to stop me speaking out.”

My heart just breaks for the family.

Ugh I hate corrupt men in Ireland.

The other thing I hate is how the GAA community stand up for each other, no matter what the men do. (Not all GAA communities). We are talking about some ofnthem

I saw an Irish comedian recently do a video about this, and i thought it was so true.

He said " raped someone? No problem if you play GAA. They will say but sure he was a good lad who was very involved in GAA"

"Murdered someone? No problem if you play GAA. They will say ah but he was a good lad who played GAA for his local community"

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 12:03

X is definitely the place if you want to find anything out. I never used X before today as I mainly use instagram. It definitely has a lot of information

This morning I hadn't known anything about the suspect.

Now, after looking at X,

I know his full name,(don't worry I won't say it here) his age, his families names and jobs.

jouxlake · 12/11/2024 12:04

I remember a story about my uncle, who was an alcoholic, who got caught many times drunk driving and always managed to get them quashed, one time the garda sergeant said he couldn't help anymore, so they went to the parish priest and he got it quashed.

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 12:07

I was just reading a bit more on X. Jesus the alleged suspects dad was not just an Irish politician, he had been elected to European parliament as well.

This is one benefit to Trump winning the election, he has promised not to censor it.

Is the suspect married, does anyone know?

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 12:20

Ita sickening that corrupt powerful men can get away with things. When a poorer man would have been put in jail.

I wonder what made the gardai decide to charge him now. You'd think if they covered it up this long, it would be safer to cover it up forever. Because now it highlights that the gardai covered it up for ages. And they can all get in trouble

loropianalover · 12/11/2024 12:23

God I just feel sick every time I think about it. Luckily I don’t have twitter so can’t see all of the chat around it. Just thinking of her and her poor family.

jouxlake · 12/11/2024 12:24

I think currently, not when it happened, but now, the Gardai will not want to do anything that could potentially jeopardise a conviction, so they would really need to be sure when they charge him. It would be a travesty if he was charged and then acquitted because of poor prosecution evidence, and never have to face justice if more evidence was uncovered.

jouxlake · 12/11/2024 12:09

I don't know, but I did see someone post on X that he has three children. Again this is not for sure, it's just very being said on social media

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 12:28

I wonder what pushed the Gardai to charge him now.

If they were covering it up for a long time because of political influence, what do they have to gain from charging him now. It would have been easier to do nothing.

Also the new young guards coming in wouldnt have much influence.

I wonder if some new very nice and moral person started working for the gardai at a senior level and gave it a review

Wildbird12 · 12/11/2024 12:31

I am genuinely upset today - I feel very emotional about this case. I remember so well when she went missing... I was two years younger than her at the time. Her name was mentioned so often over the years - almost always as part of the Vanishing Circle ...6 women who had gone missing in a particular area.

I remember hearing the so called smears about her character - I had absolutely no idea that this was deliberate. I am so disgusted about this. I can't imagine how awful this has been for her family.

I did hear the rumours over the years about a prominent farming family with a lot of land close to Moone where she was last seen. And I heard that the family had been unhelpful about having their land searched. As well as the political connections there is a strong connection to the IFA (Irish Farmers Association). The suspect is married with children.

I think that in order to charge him they need evidence - either to find JoJo's body or something very incriminating... I'm not particularly religious but I am praying that they find her and throw away the key for the despicable man who did this, and may all those who shielded him over the years have no peace for the rest of their lives.

Yes the alleged suspects dad was president of the Irish Farming Association.

So he had influence in a lot of circles.

I still would have hoped that law would have been prioritised over all influence, but it wasn't.

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 12:35

This doesn't make the political party of the alleged suspect's father look good either. It makes them look more corrupt

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 12:35

People are now posting on X a photo of the alleged suspect, and are pointing out that he has an unusual scar on his face. It looks like it could have been caused by a ring to me.

Wendysfriend · 12/11/2024 12:40

Every single person that covered this up and never came forward needs to be held accountable. Every guard, politician and family member ! They're all disgusting covering this up !!

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 12:42

Yeah it's just fucking disgusting and it's just another example of how badly women can be treated in Ireland.

The boys club can even cover up murder

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 12:45

I've seen a photo of the suspect now. He looks cruel.

Right im getting off twitter now. I've seen All there is to see.

Onehorsetown · 12/11/2024 12:45

I am hopeful that there were guards who knew but were powerless to do anything. Perhaps the passing of the political figure combined with the retirement of senior guards, politicians and members of the judiciary created an environment that allowed them pursue justice for Jo Jo and her family.

OP posts:
jouxlake · 12/11/2024 12:45

They must have had a tip off, either now or 4 years ago when they upgraded it to a murder case. I read on X that the person who gave him an alibi at the time and for the past 29 years, has recently retracted it, maybe they have been negotiating with that person for the past 4 years, and he possibly had more information that he disclosed.

Anyone remember the guy in Youghal, who claimed his wife just upped and left out of the blue and didn't report her missing, it was her sisters who reported her missing, then he 'found' her suitcase at the dump. Always on TV doing appeals for his wife, was as clear as day to everyone that he was behind her disappearance, her family knew he murdered her, but yet the gardai appeared to have never properly searched their house, and the poor guys doing drains a few years later on the road found human remains, which led the gardai to finally do a proper search of the house and found her remains behind a wall he had built soon after she disappeared. . I mean you have to wonder is it incompetence of the investigating Gardai, or do they just not give a shit because it is a woman, or are their hands tied with protocol and bureaucracy that they really can't move forward for fear of getting wrong.
