When are these muppets going to realise that the minute they call people who disagree with them 'far right' they lose all credibility with everyone outside their stupid ass-patting bubble? Ie, 70% of the country. The only people who believe that Ireland has a far right are the political and activist classes who have work themselves into a state at every slight disagreement and want to tar all dissenters with the worst slur they can think of. Everyone else knows that while there are some genuine conservatives and even some racists who are taking advantage, most people are only far right, in that they are far to the right of the current progressive ideology. But in reality, they are for the most part, old fashioned centrists.

StephanieSuperpowers · 13/03/2024 09:39

The other thing is, if you call everyone far right, you're left in a bit of a conundrum where people who've been advised that the far right is a fearsome, terrible thing, toxic and to be avoided but they then find that simply thinking that the concept of "mother" is important and should be acknowledged and celebrated, they are the dreaded far right, well, it does somewhat diminish the concept. If you're already far right and part of them, how bad can they be?

DeanElderberry · 13/03/2024 09:43

The only person in Irish politics I've heard being far-right is Varadkar with his insistence that provision of care, housing etc is not the job of the state.

Exactly. And you actually create a ripe field for an actual far right party to potentially take hold as you no longer have the words to fight against them if you render them meaningless. I don't think Ireland will turn to a real 'far right' but if we do, a lot of the blame will lie with those who have cried wolf so much. Who made people think, 'well if that's far right, I guess I am far right so.'

Just like many women happily call themselves terf now, the slur takes on a different meaning if you apply it to all disagreement. Even disagreement based on basic common sense.

I'd suggest that the Hate Speech Bill with its fairly drastic attacks on free speech could also have quite a bit in common with 'far right' politics.

Kathy Sheridan isn't keen on all this chat about women in the constitution:

Where were the Men for Mothers brigade when there was cleaning and caring to be done? – The Irish Times

She even had to lower herself so far as to mention Laoise de Brún. How appalling.

What a surprise.

Privileged woman fails to understand concerns of vast majority of Irish mothers.

I think a week on the till in tesco.or cleaning the toilets in the shopping centre should be prescribed for the obvious empathy bypass. Funny that they never seem to have those type of jobs. The women telling us the correct way to.vote.

Then doubling down and calling us far right for voting the wrong way.

Sad state of affairs and doesn't bode well for democracy.

Patrick wasn't a voluntary migrant - I hope LV isn't suggesting we start seizing slaves to fill the gaps in the workforce. That would seem a little extreme even for him.

I shouldn't have but I burst out laughing.

Leo really needs to get treatment for his foot in mouth condition.

VoteNONO · 13/03/2024 10:12

The funniest part of it is that Leo is an athiest & now he's clutching ata Catholic saint to endear himself to the Americans!
Well Leo St Patrick also chased all the snakes out of Ireland!

Knob off Kathy. I vividly remember my da changing my younger siblings nappies , a safety pin clasped in his mouth. Indeed he more or less brought up his own younger sisters , being the eldest.

A world away from these patronising , entitled cringe bags at the IT.

Asking us to snitch on our neighbours if they do a bit of garden clearance to supplement the poxy dole. How low can he go?

Another Referendum in June. Something to do with the EU. I haven't read the specifics yet but I will definitely be checking it out.

StephanieSuperpowers · 13/03/2024 11:51

I think it's got something to do with EU patent law - allowing general EU law to apply to patents here or something along those vague lines. Still, let's start ramping up our understanding of what that's all about!

VoteNONO · 13/03/2024 12:23

I know nothing about the patent laws but I read some EU countries are shunning the patents

This made me think. The 'actual' far right here don't strike me as the voting types at all. And as such we haven't seen a massive surge in far right public office holders. So it really it a ridiculous argument.

Pity St. Patrick wasn't around these days to chase out the biggest snake of all!

VoteNONO · 13/03/2024 15:18

I know! I wouldn't mind but he was brought here as a slave🙈 Leo has had more public gaffes than Prince Philip! He's getting a complete roasting for it though!
