How was your question relevant to the referendum?

Ok, if you really want to know (but can't be bothered to actually scroll back and see) I'll explain:

A poster said in reference to the anticipated results of the referendum that 'I think it may be the beginning of the end for "no debate" & "cancel" culture' and I asked what they meant by 'cancel culture' in relation to the referendum, as the only people who seemed to be missing much of a platform during media coverage of it were people with disabilities and carers.

Other groups of (relevant) people didn't seem to be 'cancelled' or ignored, but I wasn't sure if they were referring to another group I hadn't thought of and genuinely wanted to know what they meant. I was campaigning throughout the referendum from the perspective of a carer, so may have been in a bubble.

So that's why my question was relevant as I asked what someone meant by cancel culture in relation to the referendum, and why the answer regarding an English academic seemed irrelevant and (yet again) pushing focus on to a trans issue rather than what seemed more substantive in relation to the Irish referendum, i.e. the daily ignoring and horrific lack of supports for people with disabilities and carers who - at the end of the day - had the most to lose from the referendum, which - at the end of the day - is the ostensible focus of this thread.

A lot of older women seem fairly convinced that nobody asked them for their view on the constitution before the referendum. They got to express it through the vote.

festivefavorites · 12/03/2024 17:35

I see Regina Doherty, when asked if she thought 16 year old teenagers could be TDs, replied that she hadn't thought that far ahead.
🙄🙄

That’s interesting, thanks

Just listened to Regina Doherty on Clare Byrne's morning show on radio, who wasn't re-elected by her constituents but was appointed by the Taoiseach to the Seanad 🙄 proposing that 16 year olds get the vote.

Gotta love Regina ! She led the campaign to abolish the body of which she is now a member.

It's the utter lack of shame or self awareness that makes her a great Irish politician. Regina for President. You read it here first !

You asked what cancel culture. I gave an example of cancel culture that shows what can happen when someone deviates from one of the current woke orthodoxies. It doesn't need to relate specifically to anyone involved in the referendum as the existence of this cancel culture means many people are afraid to voice opinions that deviate from any of the current woke orthodoxies due to a fear of repercussions.

No way are the teens today going to vote for the crusty old TDs who talk about pronouns & don't know what a woman is!

I can just see the TDs targeting all the secondary school TYs, 5th & 6th years with big tubs of haribo, celebrations & hero's complete with their rainbow badges 🤣🤣

When I heard her saying "Solidarity" to the other Yes Yes supporter in the audience I thought there was something a bit off.

Sweet divine Jesus @Abhannmor
".........Regina for President. You read it here first !"

She'll have to fight off Bertie ( God help us 🙄) and I heard Frances Fitzgerald on the radio today too- she's not contesting the next European elections apparently. I had forgotten she's our representative there so she might be eyeing up the Park too.

Wow talk about stupid

QuiZZ · 12/03/2024 21:10

McDowell might hop over the wall in the Pheeno and take MickleD's hot seat. Place yer bets!

Scary though it is but I would seriously consider voting for him.

He knows law and may just be more willing to forward any laws he has reservations about

They really don't engage their brains anymore.

I do think Labour is still out in the wilderness. They have never recovered from the 2016, I think election that hammered them

Oh my, the irony and cognitive dissonance.

Thanks to us the people, mammy is still a position of honour and recognised in constitution for him to use

But I specifically asked where the cancel
culture was in relation to the Irish referendum as that was the discussion 🤷‍♀️…so don’t ask how my question was relevant to the referendum as it clearly was!

No you didn't. Your question simply asked "what cancel culture" in response to @VoteNONO who said cancel culture and no debate will be a thing of the past. She was, I believe, referring to cancel culture in general, rather than specifically referring to incidents in relation to the referendum (@VoteNONO - please correct me if I'm wrong).

Whatnonsenseisthisnow · 12/03/2024 22:08

As the previous posts to @VoteNONO's spoke about
'the erasure of women and the erosion of hard fought sex based rights, which were already under threat by the brining in, without consultation with the electorate, of the GRA in 2015, while we were all busy'
I'm almost certain you're not wrong @OchonAgusOchonOh.

Yes I meant we will have the freedom to question things & not being afraid of being excluded, cancelled or belittled because we don't agree with certain ideologies that are constantly pushed down our throats.
I feel after this referendum people are feeling a bit more freedom to say (respectfully), how they feel.
We went though a long period of "no debate" where anyone who questioned anything e.g "what is a woman" was treated with contempt & immediately shot down which is ludicrous in a democracy.

St Patrick was a sole male migrant to Ireland... Says Leo Varadkar in Boston.... I thought Leo was an athiest...they are really really scraping the barrel now...

OP posts:
honeyrider · 13/03/2024 09:18

St. Patrick was originally trafficked into Ireland.

DeanElderberry · 13/03/2024 09:18

Patrick wasn't a voluntary migrant - I hope LV isn't suggesting we start seizing slaves to fill the gaps in the workforce. That would seem a little extreme even for him.
