The more I listen the voters the more l am hearing especially from older women it's the word mother they opposed.

I'd love to ask them the thinking behind this. Removing references to "women" in medical literature and replacing them with references to organs appeared to them to be such a popular move that removing "mother" from the constitution seemed like it would be popular? How, if they pay attention to anything, did they not see that it would go down like a bag of sick?

It wasn't being sold as removing mother though.

They played the progressive card, oh look at us, we want to liberate women.

Every time I saw one of them preaching from a podium I was waiting for a bit of Aretha & Annie Lennox in the background.

StephanieSuperpowers · 12/03/2024 09:35

But even though they weren't selling it as removing the word 'mother', people can read. They can see for themselves.

VaddaABeetch · 12/03/2024 09:58

I campaigned for a No No. As soon as I showed people the current wording & the proposed new wording people got it. The government really believed the peasants are stupid. They could get people to vote yes because they told them to. We are more educated & intelligent than you, this is progressive. we don’t want the world to think that we in Ireland are shock, horror religious? You must embrace the new religion of ‘progress’ Add in A few sound bites & appealing to drippy sentiment,

Irish people in the main are well clued in politically. They live real lives & wont be taken in.

Time for politicians to focus on the real issues in Ireland & forget their drippy emotive nonsense.

StephanieSuperpowers · 12/03/2024 10:23

Listening to liveline now. Super interesting stuff. If people think that they're taking about ill informed half wits who didn't understand and consider carefully what they were doing, they don't deserve the electorate.

VaddaABeetch · 12/03/2024 10:41

Wait until you hear ReferDave at the end @StephanieSuperpowers. He studied Constitutional law don’t you know. He believes that people didn’t understand the changes & therefore shouldn’t have been allowed vote,

DeanElderberry · 12/03/2024 11:22

And now the push to lower the voting age to 16 has started!

Abhannmor · 12/03/2024 11:28

@disaggregate is right to say the GRA is not relevant to the Amendments per se. But I think it would be naive in the extreme to think gender ideology was not a huge driver in the push to remove the word Mother. Trans rights activists have been at pains to point out how triggered they are by its use.

Since Roderic O Gorman is 100 % committed to gender ideology , surely it played a big part in the wording if the proposed Amendments?

Is the plan that if they can't wait until we're all dead they'll just overwhelm us with numbers? Good luck to them.

Let them! The younger people are pushing back against the governments rainbow washing, flags & alphabet soup..
In the same way we revolted against the nuns, mass & religion when we were young. Teenagers aren't go to follow the status quo when the likes that are pushing it as fuddy duddys like LV & ROG...

My nephews & his friends (aged 18 to 20)all voted No on Friday.. I feel what the government is pushing is quickly going out of fashion like prounons..

I've just heard Constitutional Dave there. Great man. I think he'd be surprised to hear that some of us who voted no also have degrees - even in relevant subjects!

JaneJeffer · 12/03/2024 11:56

I think it's fair to say that despite what the media would have everyone believe there are plenty of young people who have no time for all the woke nonsense either!

I agree, we were never asked about removing these words from policy and literature, it's just been done without consent. If they do ask people, they get a resounding NO.

It bothers me how much they can push through without public approval - the ongoing Hate Crime legislation changes, the GRA. Why can't we vote on these issues?
I understand that a referendum for every piece of legislation would be tedious, but it's frustrating that the GRA was pushed through without public approval...

Roderic O'Gorman has been consistent in this regard. One of the callers into Liveline made the point that he was one of the drivers in removing the words women and mother from maternity literature.
There are over 100 mentions of men in the Constitution, notably in regard to property rights and positions of power such as judges.
Yet neither Roderic or the National Women's Council made any efforts to remove this 'sexist' language. It just goes to show that gender ideology is just as sexist as a patriarchal society. It's all about the men.

VaddaABeetch · 12/03/2024 12:21

Next step Hate Crime laws

LadyEloise1 · 12/03/2024 12:21

Just listened to Regina Doherty on Clare Byrne's morning show on radio, who wasn't re-elected by her constituents but was appointed by the Taoiseach to the Seanad 🙄 proposing that 16 year olds get the vote.

So the over 18s didn't understand what they were voting for, but 16 and 17 year old teens are OK?
Though, as that is the same Regina who told Scottish Parliament that there were no problems in Ireland following the GRA, she doesn't seem to be very clued in to reality.

StephanieSuperpowers · 12/03/2024 12:31

Ah, Good old Nine Genders. Great stuff.

elgreco · 12/03/2024 13:18

My 18 yo voted for the first time. No/ No.

Teenagers who don't swallow gendershit whole hate it even more than adults. They have had to listen to it non stop for years now.

Jaysus it's all coming out in the wash now! These two Fianna Gail TDs flew to London for the rugby instead of carrying out their civic duty!

Two Fine Gael senators failed to vote in referendum, instead flew to London for England v Ireland rugby match

TWO of the Taoiseach’s Fine Gael colleagues at Leinster House failed to vote in the Family and Care referendums because they were travelling to Ireland’s rugby showdown with England at Twickenham.

Ciara Doherty was downright rude, bitchy and biased to Sarah Carey last night, constantly interrupting her and not letting her finish any point Sarah was attempting to make yet she didn't keep interrupting the womb renter.
Ciara represents everything that is wrong with main stream media and is rightly getting slated since last night's show.

Mine too @elgreco .

I told him my reasoning and gave him some sources of information to read, I left him to make up his own mind and he did.

AncientBallerina · 12/03/2024 14:58

My late teens / early 20s children don’t believe a word of the gender identity stuff - in fact I am slightly more tolerant than one of them.
Like many women, I suspect, I was deeply suspicious of the removal of the words mother and woman from the constitution, having recently been described as a person who menstruates (which I am not, being an aul wan)
It seems like the push for the referendum came from the NWCI (among others) who, this result shows, clearly do not represent Irish women and should have their funding removed.
I don’t think many of us like ‘duties in the home’ phrase but could put up with it when we saw the alternative.

Same in this house. I have to give out sometimes when I think they're being too intolerant!

honeyrider · 12/03/2024 15:58

The NWCI have gone into hiding and are not taking requests to appear on radio or tv shows.

I think they've gotten way too much funding and they're not representing women and should have their funding slashed.
