Me neither.

Is it better to look like a liar or a fool?

He is not going down without his best fight anyway.

Watching it now and I'm fuming.
All this time wasted on something worth buttons in the scheme of things.
Why have the grandstanding politicians not hauled those involved in the National Childrens Hospital into the Oireachtas, in front of the Public Accounts Committee to explain the multi millions of tax payers money being overspent.
Why are the media constantly giving. the RT stuff so much air ?

This 💯 %

Taytocrisps · 11/07/2023 20:05

I'm just making dinner and then I'll sit down and watch the Six One news (recorded from earlier).

Taytocrisps · 11/07/2023 21:02

Based on the summary on the Six One news, Tubridy and Kelly are presenting a united front and pointing the finger of blame firmly at RTE. But of course, they had to have known that there was something decidedly fishy about the whole arrangement. And Tubridy had every opportunity to correct his salary when it was publicized but chose not to.

Having said all that, the executives in RTE (whoever knew about the arrangement) carry the larger share of blame because they (1) acquiesced to Kelly's demands instead of standing their ground and calling his (and Tubridy's) bluff and (2) they came up with the whole barter account arrangement.

I was going to say that I wouldn't mind being a fly on the wall of the RTE canteen atm but apparently it's closed due to a rat infestation https://www.irishtimes.com/media/2023/07/10/rte-staff-canteen-closed-over-suspected-rat-infestation/

RTÉ staff canteen closed over suspected rat infestation

Broadcaster confirms it has closed its main restaurant for the second time this year amid ‘evidence of rodent activity’

DeanElderberry · 11/07/2023 21:12

Rats or just a danger of staff talking to each other and joining forces?

I am getting a sense of Noel Kelly being involved in a lot of what stinks about present day RTE. Still very entertained by Tubridy blaming him for everything, him blaming RTE for everything, and both of them whining about how it's so unfair.

Wendysfriend · 11/07/2023 22:40

It was actually more interesting than I expected, I thought Ryan and Noel would come off badly but I think they explained everything well and backed everything up with facts, paperwork etc

There's definitely some corruption going on in RTE, although it seems to be everywhere.

The repeating of the questions from the minister's was extremely annoying, these are well educated people so I would have thought they would use their time wisely, they obviously don't communicate with each other and agree on what to ask, they could have saved so much time and fitted in many different questions.

The man behind Ryan and Noel, not sure who he is but he was fantastic, had every paper to hand, looked so calm and confident, he did a brilliant job providing all the paperwork.

I actually feel so sorry for Ryan, he looks broken.

For what they're questioning it is pittance compared to the wasted billions already spent on the hospital.

A legal type perhaps?
He advised NK not to answer if he received any bonus for one amount RT received tho.. I can't remember exactly what

Afaik he was a lawyer. It's all very 'cute hoor'. Ryan knows full well he's been caught rotten but he isn't holding his hsnds up. Dick move imo.

Abhannmor · 12/07/2023 08:25

I know what you mean @Wendysfriend . Not a fan of Ryan but I think it's all a symptom rather than a cause of a broken society. And it pales into insignificance compared to the €60bn or whatever we are paying the bondholders because their bets on the property market went sour.

Or is is 100bn ? I can't follow it all. People have no sense of scale or proportion. I have a friend who is annoyed about the President's salary. He seems to think abolishing the office would solve our problems.

But it's not just RTÉ and it's not just Ireland although it looks a bit stark here because we are a small country. I wonder how much you'd get paid for hosting a chat show in Wales or Scotland. Any Celtic cousins on here?

MoreCraicPlease · 12/07/2023 08:47

Stephen Nolan gets £400k for his show on BBC Northern Ireland and talk show on bbc 5 live. The vast majority wouldn’t pick him out of a line up in term of recognition.

SunMootStars · 12/07/2023 09:36

The man behind was their lawyer: Joe O'Malley. He had them well prepped I thought.

hayes-solicitors.ie/team-details/Joe-O-Malley

LookItsMeAgain · 12/07/2023 10:00

The difference between how the RTE executives presented themselves and their case to the two committees versus how Ryan and Noel presented their case was very stark.

I mean that Ryan and Noel had a hymn sheet to speak from and they were both singing from it. Not a single differing account was suggested by either of them. The fault was RTE's and RTE must own it, was basically what they both were saying.

On the other hand RTE was all over the place and throwing each other under the bus. It shows just how disorganised the broadcaster is from the top down.

I really do feel for the general staff in RTE while this is dragging on.

Something though that I don't think any of the politicians has questioned either group on - why did Ryan get paid in advance during a pandemic for public appearances that he himself admits he owes 6 appearances for? In most businesses you're paid in arrears for whatever work you have done, not for what you might get around to doing. He did say that he'd pay it back if they didn't happen but who is going to chase him for that?? And then where does he pay it back to, the barter account or RTE proper?

IrritableVowel · 12/07/2023 11:18

I don't know how he'd go about paying it back, but we would often invoice e.g. 50% on commission and balance on completion for some of our clients, so it probably isn't that usual to "owe" a client some work.

Caveat - I am not in accounts or a CFO, just a project manager

Wendysfriend · 12/07/2023 12:24

I don't think we'll ever know the full cost of the hospital, I doubt we'll be told the truth. How long is it going on? Since 2016?

Chat show hosts everywhere seem to be paid all different amounts but it does seem the average is over 400k, I was surprised to read Pat Kenny earned just under 1 million , I guess these figures seem high to me who's poor and thinks over 30k a year is rich.

Thanks for that man's name, Joe O Malley, so he's a solicitor, he was just fantastic, it was clear he had read everything, knew every detail, was so prepared and just seemed so professional. The minute something was mentioned he had the paperwork to hand immediately or knew the page number and remembered exactly where to find it and what every page said, they're was no fumbling around with pages. He's someone I'd like to hire if I needed a solicitor.

With regards to getting paid in advance. I suppose with covid a lot of businesses 'owed' services, things like holidays were postponed, they were paid for but people had to go at a later date, parties, weddings, etc these would have been paid for but people couldn't have them, I think with Ryan, him saying he owed them road shows was because of covid that he couldn't do them at time but would at a later date. I don't know if getting paid in advance was a normal thing generally? Covid aside. If it was normal to get paid in advance before doing the work then I can see why he didn't return or refuse the money immediately, or question it. He had paperwork with Renault about the roadshows owed. As for returning the money if the roadshows don't happen, I though Ryan and Noel thought it was Renault that paid them and not RTE? It was a different name on the payment hence the whole questioning.

I am more confused than ever...today was to be about the future still all about the past. Lots of questions still need to answered.

It's a bit like they're covering it while studiously avoiding it . It's totally the elephant in the room. I wouldn't 'blame' them tbf, they know they have to be on seriously good behaviour now.

DeanElderberry · 13/07/2023 15:41

Alan Kelly produced a good (though still not exhaustive) list of questions that will keep them busy and clarify things. Bakhurst looked unsure whether to be apalled or grateful for the pointers.

The impression on Boards.ie seems to be that Tubridy has not been paid this week.

Nolan is not my cup of tea , although he has done great work on the trans issue which nobody in the 26 would dare to touch. But Radio 5 has a massive audience many times that of RTE. Arguably still overlaid though I agree

DeanElderberry · 17/08/2023 19:57

Happy days!

he isn't coming back

LookItsMeAgain · 17/08/2023 20:10

They might just see a slight recovery in the license fee renewals. They still have to get their own house in order in RTÉ or we'll just be having this all again in 10-20 yrs time!

Chickenkeev · 17/08/2023 20:21

Wonder where he's going so? I assume he has something lined up?

DeanElderberry · 17/08/2023 20:26

Surely he could live on his savings for a few decades?

Who says he was saving it all!?! Little f*cker. Good enough for him. That argument of 'i didn't know' wouldn't work for the rest of us. Ignorance to the law is no excuse as they say.

Kimten · 17/08/2023 22:22

I fancy Kevin Backhurst.
