There is MASSIVE overspending and mis-mangement of public finances in the Irish Government. The e-Voting machines, then their storage and finally selling them off for a fraction of what they cost us.
Then there is the Cervical Screening situation where our Taoiseach gave assurances that no woman would have to go through the legal process in order to be compensated for the handling of their individual cases, yet women are dying from cervical cancer while their legal cases are being heard in either the High court or the Supreme court and then their husbands are being forced back to the beginning of the legal process to get any redress.
Then there is the National Children's Hospital and the phenomenal wastage of money there.
Then there is the housing crisis because even during the boom times we either couldn't be arsed building stable secure homes (they are now beginning to crumble) or we couldn't be arsed building at all. The Pyrite scandal fits in here nicely.
Then there is the banking crisis itself...I could go on and on and on.

At least I'm hoping that the outcome from this will be a better run, fit for purpose national broadcaster.

In the meantime I can foresee a huge swathe of the population refusing to pay their TV license fee for what they get for it.

LadyEloise1 · 06/07/2023 16:56

I totally agree @LookItsMeAgain.

I sometimes think that all those who fought and died for Ireland over 100 years ago would be spinning in their graves at the shambles later generations of politicians have inflicted on us and we've allowed them to by continually voting them in.
As the WB Yeats poem, September 1913 goes -
"Was it for this.....
For this that all that blood was shed ........."

LookItsMeAgain · 06/07/2023 17:29

I love that poem.

"Romantic Ireland's dead and gone,
It's with O'Leary in the grave"

Beats Kavanagh's "Oh stony grey soil of Monaghan" (at least in my eyes)

Taytocrisps · 06/07/2023 18:18

It's a great poem. These lines are particularly appropriate.

"But fumble in a greasy till
And add the halfpence to the pence
And prayer to shivering prayer, until
You have dried the marrow from the bone;"

That is 100% it tbh. Well said 👏

So it was Marty who had the car for 5 years, luckily for him the social media armchair detective's haven't come for him.

Tuesday should be a good day, will be interesting to hear Ryan tell his truth. 😉

Isn't it mad to think that the man who runs Ireland is on less wages than an RTE presenter 🙈

Chickenkeev · 06/07/2023 21:20

Strangely, I was just talking to my mam and we were talking about all this mess and she told me her first job was in rte. I always thought her first job was in a solicitors in limerick but apparently not!

I can't wait to hear Ryan have to supplicate himself to the unwashed. About time.

MoreCraicPlease · 07/07/2023 06:57

Only a thread on an Irish subject would quote so much poetry!
Agree with you all of course.

LookItsMeAgain · 07/07/2023 08:40

We think it was Marty who had the car. He definitely had a car but whether it was the one that was being discussed at the Oireachtas committee hearings is still to be clarified.
This is because Marty said he gave the car back at the end of June and the executives in RTE said, when questioned, that it was returned on the 5th July so there is a discrepancy in the date the vehicle got returned.

I think the TV license will have to be scrapped and be paid by the exchequer. I mean if everyone had whatever the necessary amount to make up €100 per person, that would give RTE over half a billion euro to run their tv and radio services. If it does get paid by the exchequer, I think they need to shelve having adverts on the channel and then that means that TV3/Virgin Media gets all of the advertising revenue and that should mean that they are able to produce more home grown programming instead of buying it in. There are hints of a silver lining in all of this

I do think though that we will have to move past the RTE debacle shortly and focus on the other HUGH money wasters.

DeanElderberry · 07/07/2023 09:51

I'm just amazed that this broadcast company, that I thought had a public serice remit, not only paid a few random celebs huge money, but also let them off having to declare their interests. So much else that had seemed dodgy - notably the recent repeated pushing of the newest anti-obesity drug by the people who will be getting paid to prescribe it, really iffy stuff - also the lack of coverage of Helen McEntee's neo blasphemy legislation - is coming into perspective.

Sell off Montrose, move everything except political coverage to Limerick and Cork, have a finite pay scale for presenters that (like political salaries) relates to a point on national average wage, make them sign registers of interest, name the researchers and members of the production team for each programme on the website and at least once a week on regular shows.

I suspect Marty Morrisey spent a week sweating but is going to turn out to be one of the most blameless.

Marty came forward and admitted himself that it was him who had the car in question for 5 years and explained how he came to have the car for that amount of time.

LadyEloise1 · 07/07/2023 17:50

Dee Forbes not being there to be questioned is like Hamlet without the Prince.
She knows all the answers.

But enough of Ryan Tubridy and RTE mismanagement.
There are more important things going on in the world - the Children's Hospital overspend etc 😢

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 07/07/2023 18:09

There might be more important things going on with overspends @LadyEloise1I don't think it's right to say ok park this RTE one and we'll concentrate on a bigger one. A crime is a crime and there certainly appears to be a few areas that needs to be investigated from undeclared tax due to the exchequer to total incompetence by management

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 07/07/2023 18:13

Pressed too fast ....

The one thing I still haven't heard anything about is how the barter accounts were funded. If the heads are to be believed they had no knowledge of the barter accounts so this then leads to wondering how on earth the CFO and others in the financial know and the annual settling of accounts didn't miss those funds in their general accounts !!

💯

Also was the car lent to Marty for five years the same car or did he get a new car every so often ?

Nannyamc · 09/07/2023 14:31

Roll on tuesday. I think it will the best tv we have ever seen.

Abhannmor · 09/07/2023 14:42

Oh Ireland my first and only love
Where Christ and Caesar are hand in glove .

Soonenough · 09/07/2023 15:22

Never mind that shite. Who does Marty's eyebrows ? Does he get an account for his treatments?! The public have the right to know.

Mamette · 09/07/2023 15:46

For anyone who may have missed this comprehensive RTÉ big-shot condemnation session by a judge presiding over tv licence fee evasion cases on Friday last. He even brought Shakespeare and 2 x George Orwell refs into it, fair play to him 😂
https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/courtandcrime/arid-41178742.html

People paying TV licence fee watch money 'squandered and abused', says judge

The judge also referred to what he described as "elitism and exclusivity shown and demonstrated by the RTÉ "ruling class".

Rory Coveney has now resigned.

LadyEloise1 · 09/07/2023 17:32

He's Simon Coveney's brother isn't he ?

Nannyamc · 09/07/2023 17:37

Yes. Director at RTE

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 09/07/2023 17:52

Resigned before being kicked out by incoming DG's overhaul?

LookItsMeAgain · 09/07/2023 17:54

Nannyamc · 09/07/2023 17:23

Rory Coveney has now resigned.

The bloke that was trying to vindicate having "Toy Show: The Musical" which made a staggering €2.2m loss.

So that's him gone and Geraldine O'Leary will be gone in 7 weeks so that is two down. I wonder how many others will fall on their swords between now and the next time the Oireachtas has more hearings (excluding the ones with Ryan and his agent on Tuesday).

I believe pubs around Dublin will be showing the hearing on their tellys on Tuesday. You could not make this up!
