Mattie McGrath's presentation technique of seeming like a naive rustic while actually being cute as a fox confuses those city types.

Wendysfriend · 05/07/2023 16:01

Is that man who was in the white suit Mattie Mc Grath? I couldn't understand him, what questions was he asking? I was wondering why no one was answering him.

DeanElderberry · 05/07/2023 16:06

I wasn't watching it so can't say anything about today, but I've met Mattie and seen him in action in other contexts, and people underestimate him at their peril.

It will be interesting to see the written record of the meeting.

LadyEloise1 · 05/07/2023 16:13

@Wendysfriend Yes the man in the pale suit is Matty Mc Grath.

Thanks for that, I don't know him so handy to have his name to have a look and see what he asked. I was a bit 😲 when they all sat there not answering.

He's a Healy-Rae without a hat 🤣 but seriously, i thought his questions were excellent. The way the RTE woman deliberately slowed her speech when talking to him really f*cked me off, she spoke to him like he was a complete simpleton and he was anything but.

LadyEloise1 · 05/07/2023 18:26

Ok so what went on in RTE was wrong.
Taxpayers money.
Imho RT was greedy and I'm disappointed in him.
I thought he was Mr truly Nice Guy.
DH with his usual commercial hat on keeps banging on that Ryan brings the big money in for the station from the advertisers so RTE want to keep him, need to keep him hence the big bucks and the people in lower paying jobs in RTE need the likes of RT as he and their ilk bring the big money in and keep the station afloat.
But it's all just a spectacle.
There'll be no accountability.
I wish someone would haul in those involved in building the Children's Hospital and ask them about the enormous overrun on budget.
To me this is much more serious.
We're talking huge sums of taxpayer's money.

Chickenkeev · 05/07/2023 18:35

Just listening to the 6 1 and the bullshit they're coming out with is infuriating. I'd bet my house that ryan knew about the workings of it but ultimately it's RTE who should be under the microscope. No one 'talent' 🤣 can be hung out to dry for this, this is much bigger than one person

DeanElderberry · 05/07/2023 18:38

Tubridy's relentless avarice was so clearly showcased on the radio show, week in, week out, that I'm amazed anyone is surprised by this. He showed us what he was like all the time.

Chickenkeev · 05/07/2023 18:41

I reckon this might even be the point tbh! Nobody talking about the hospital anymore conveniently enough.

I was always bemused that out of a one hour programme, he spent half of it shiting about how he went for a walk, or got an ice cream bla bla. It was a joke of a programme. I don't think he's the worst interviewer neccessarily, but got ideas waaaaay above his station. And clearly was facilitated in that. As the saying goes "it's the fall that's gonna kill ya"

Abhannmor · 05/07/2023 19:06

We must give the ' talent ' a golden elephant every month or they will go somewhere else. Where though ? Gaybo had a gig on Granada TV for a bit. Vincent Hanley used to do holiday relief on Capital Radio in London. Agus sin sin.

Let's face it who else would employ them. There have been precisely 2 RTE heads who have done well in the UK : - Eamonn Andrews , Terry Wogan. Was going to include Graham Norton but he doesn't owe his fame to RTE.

RTE must stop dealing with agents too. These talking heads are not Leo Messi or Taylor Swift ffs.

Taytocrisps · 05/07/2023 19:17

I wonder who had the loan of the car.

What I really don't get is why the staff responsible for authorising the additional payments thought they could get away with it I mean, RTE has always had auditors - surely the payments were going to come to light at some point?

DeanElderberry · 05/07/2023 19:24

It's always:

Went for a walk, got bought an ice cream, was admired by someone, came into work and opened the latest gift he'd been sent, found (or faked) a huge gap in his general knowledge which he marked with a charming boyish chuckle (shudder), did an interview with someone (researched and scripted by people whose existence he barely acknowledged), solicited a paid trip somewhere, admired his wondrousness, sneered at the ungodly.

Maybe something about JFK.

When i did accounting, we were told that the main reasons that things came to light were disgruntled wives and family members. It was almost never a whistleblower from within the company. You'd be surprised what people will ignore tbh.

You forgot to explicitly mention Dun Laoghaire pier. Tsk 🤣

Chickenkeev · 05/07/2023 19:42

And a bleedin' book shop 😒 he used to bang on about the one in Sandymount. It was quaint but it was absolutely tiny and you couldn't realistically browse. He was blowing smoke up everyone's holes imo.

DeanElderberry · 05/07/2023 19:43

Do you remember when he spent about six months pretending not to believe in the existence of puffins and enthusing about Icelandic writers and wishing he could go there and then he got a gift of - a trip to Iceland!

And he's barely mentioned the country or its writers since.

NO! Tell me more!!!

DeanElderberry · 05/07/2023 19:46

That's pretty much it. I realise I'm a jealous begrudger, but the knowledge that his income for a week was bigger than mine for a year has always made me impatient with the banging on about freebies.

It's not being a jealous begrudger though! The fucker has been chancing his arm for years, while everyone else has slogged.i doubt he'll be getting kicked out of his gaff any time soon like.

DeanElderberry · 05/07/2023 19:56

But what will I do for exercise now I don't have to dive for the radio off switch every morning?

A trip to Clifden and a stroll around sure! While the natives suck up and the like. Just a pity RTE won't be paying for it this time 😂

Usou · 06/07/2023 08:27

Financial impropriety and annoying presenters aside, RTE is an incredibly poor news source.

All they do is push progressive agendas and offer airtime to dodgy NGOs. RT had an anti-Trump corner almost every day for the duration of his tenure. While I understand DT was not everybody's cup oftea, surely RTE's role is to inform? Why the silence on Biden while much of the same stuff goes on?

Likewise Brexit. Pro-Palestinian causes are presented entirely without context, and this slant ensures that Irish people remain very poorly informed on the reality of the Middle East.

The recent French riots were presented as "resulting from a racist police killing " entirely without explanation or context, and anti-immigration protesters around Ireland were (naturally) treated as racist dimbos to be talked down to rather than people with legitimate concerns.

An appalling media company - and we're expected to pay for it?
