Where is Dee Forbes ?
She was the very highly paid Director General when the sht hit the fan and when all those deals were being negotiated.
With that high salary came perks too.
She was paid well because she was responsible for what went on on her watch yet when it all goes t
ts up she's gone. Doesn't have to answer any questions.
That's not how it is supposed to work.
Ah but of course !
It's Ireland you say !
That explains it.
No one is ever accountable no matter how well they are paid.
HSE anyone ?

Well, that's pretty much it isn't it. A wee bit of fuss, and then it's all gonna be forgotten.

I’m obviously a bit thick but I don’t understand about the licence numbers falling.

I thought they had you every which way with the licence, as in, you have to have one if you’ve any screens in the house at all.

Can you get away with not having a licence if you’re not watching RTÉ? Mine’s due to expire at the end of the month 😂

I could use the money to go towards the schools “voluntary contribution”!

DeanElderberry · 18/08/2023 16:03

You have to have a license if you have a TV, whatever you watch. otoh, you are not required to have a license for a laptop or tablet (at one stage they proposed extending the license requirement that way, but dropped the idea).

Mamette · 18/08/2023 16:42

Thanks @DeanElderberry I thought as much.

I do begrudge paying it tbh.

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 18/08/2023 16:54

Our licence is due at the end of Aug but we've never paid it till late Sept or Oct. I suspect an increasing number of people are doing this year- it's not a priority with bills increasing everywhere or others are probably waiting to see what way the fiasco finishes up and see how much more money RTE are wasting away on inflated wages and contracts

DeanElderberry · 18/08/2023 17:25

I don't have a TV - there have been times I've felt a little guilty at not being able to pay for a radio license. Don't feel that way now, and will be most annoyed if they start taxing me to pay for those self indulgent wastrels.

Every time some idiot appears on the radio and claims Tubridy was a good radio broadcaster I get cross all over again - he was lazy and self indulgent and at his best rather dull.

LookItsMeAgain · 20/08/2023 09:49

Looks like the Government is going to try to bring in a "Broadcast Charge"
https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/tv-licence-fee-likely-to-be-replaced-by-revenue-collected-broadcast-charge-for-all-public-service-outlets-in-wake-of-rte-pay-scandal/a453926803.html

That will most probably go the way of the water charges that were going to be brought in.

I think, if they do bring in a broadcast charge there should be terms and conditions applied to how RTE uses it.

  1. They should stop buying in programmes and movies from the UK that are accessible on BBC/ITV/Channel 4/Other platforms. That made sense when there wasn't the option of Sky or cable television. Now it's utterly pointless to have Eastenders on RTE1 and on BBC1 at the same time.
  2. They should have to do away with adverts on their channels. Let the likes of Virgin Media work off the advertising revenue that RTE can't access any more, so they shouldn't have ad breaks in their programmes any more.
  3. They should produce more domestic programmes and bring on new presenters instead of recycling the same old ones. Even if someone only gets 2 or 3 episodes of a programme, they've had a go and let the viewing public decide by their viewing figures if someone is to get a regular presenter job. It should be based on ability not who you know, or who your family was.
  4. They should be able to improve the news, current affairs and sports reporting departments to include sports where Irish athletes are competing but that don't usually get the same level of coverage.

TV licence fee likely to be replaced by Revenue-collected ‘broadcast charge’ for all public service outlets in wake of RTÉ pay scandal

The TV licence will not increase beyond €160 but is likely to be reformed into a “broadcasting charge” that will be collected from every household by the Revenue Commissioners.

  1. They should decrease the ludicrous wages of the so-called 'talent'. 2FM breakfast I'm looking at you (but not listening!)
LookItsMeAgain · 20/08/2023 10:39

Agreed @mikado1 .

LadyEloise1 · 20/08/2023 11:03

"They should decrease the ludicrous wages......"
I agree.
The options are RTE, Virgin or Newstalk for the "talent"
Unless they go abroad.
Many won't want to.
The "talent" bring in a lot of advertising revenue, true but RTE, Virgin and Newstalk shoot themselves in the foot by offering such high salaries.
It spiralled out of control.
It should never have started.
But the stars and their agents are happy.

honeyrider · 20/08/2023 11:11

RTE needs to address the rife nepotism then it might attract some "talent".

mikado1 · 20/08/2023 11:33

Agree with all of the above also.

Abhannmor · 20/08/2023 11:34

I feel a bit conflicted. Ireland does need an Irish owned national broadcaster. All the commercial stations are owned by foreign corporations and / or oligarchs.

But the salaries are ludicrous. Children's programmes was one area where RTÉ genuinely excelled . Then it was all shut down on grounds of cost and replaced by Brit and Yank CGI garbage. Think what shows could be produced if they didn't blow so much on insane salaries.

LookItsMeAgain · 20/08/2023 12:07

That's what I mean by producing more domestic content (not suggesting for a second that they bring Bosco back) but so many people tune in to listen to Bedtime stories on CBeebies - why isn't this an area that RTE could produce it's own content and get celebrities to record themselves reading a bedtime story? Get the general public to do it? See what happens.

Why can't RTE produce its own domestic nature programmes or period dramas or do a joint venture if funds were tight? Look to our history and produce the best damn Irish history programmes out there. Except we don't. Either couldn't be arsed or some other feeble excuse (imo).

Abhannmor · 20/08/2023 12:49

I know @LookItsMeAgain . Actually Bosco works for under 5s still.
The Den knocked spots off the UK TV of its time.

Nature shows ....Amúigh Faoin Spéir was brilliant. With new technology stuff can be made fairly cheaply too?

Chickenkeev · 20/08/2023 13:14

The covid kids programmes were really good. So it is possible. Dunno why they don't do it really too busy paying off Tubs

LookItsMeAgain · 21/08/2023 16:12

Apparently the new Late Late Show will not have a sponsor and will be a shorter programme.

Best of luck to Paddy Kielty with it. I think he's inherited a poisoned chalice at the moment (happy to be convinced otherwise).

BiddyPop · 26/08/2023 11:30

I was listening to Patrick Kirsty on BBC radio at 9am this morning and wondering (as it's obviously his first day back after summer hols) if he's going to keep doing that after TLLS on Friday nights? Presumably using the BBC's Dublin studio if so?

BiddyPop · 26/08/2023 11:30

Patrick Kielty...blinking' autocorrect

LadyEloise1 · 26/08/2023 15:42

Will Ryan Tubridy join the BBC and broadcast from Dublin ?

Abhannmor · 26/08/2023 17:09

The Beeb is moving to Dublin? Why not I suppose. Every Irish pub/ restaurant/ filling station seems to have a UK radio or TV service blaring out now. It's quite surreal....there's a man or woman outside Westminster blathering away and nobody here knows or cares what's happening.
Yet somehow we accept that as normal...

Soonenough · 26/08/2023 17:38

BBC have a studio in Belfast .
